Only The Good Die Young Lyrics

Artist: Billy Joel

Come out Virginia, don't let me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Ah but sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well, will be the one

Well they showed you a statue and told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
Ah but they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done

Only the good die young
That's what I said
Only the good die young
Only the good die young

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty, we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
Ah but that never hurt noone

So come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I'll throw you a line
That stained glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never lets in the sun

Darlin only the good die young
I tell you only the good die young
Only the good die young

You get a nice white dress
And a party on your confirmation
You've got a brand new soul
Mm and a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you
Quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
And they say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't

I'd rather laugh with the sinners
Than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun

You know that only the good die young
I tell you only the good die young
Only the good die young

You said your mother told you
All I could give you was a reputation
Ah she never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me?

Come out, come out, come out Virginia
Don't let me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well, will be the one
You know that only the good die young
Tell you baby
You know that only the good die young

you all have it wrong. this pig billy joel, was singing a song about getting girls to give up their virginity. his words aren't true about the good die young. it is just the opposite, i have bagged enough young and dead, they weren't being good. words from the pit of hell. sorry!

I sort of agree with you, rch184. it does seem a little... off. but I still think it's a really good song despite the lyrics. and billy Joel was a great musician, not a pig!!!

We all know what the song is about. And remember, it's just a SONG and doesn't apply to everyone.

This is a good example of how songwriters used to "lay it between the lines". Now-A-Days the hip hop/rappers just say it. Not too classy.

Joel admits that the girl does not give up her virginity. He is just thinking out loud what some think to themselves.

I don't now why you guys would diss Billy Joel, sure, some of his songs could be a little..."questionable" but still you have to give him props for even making the songs in the first place, I'm thinking that some of you have absolutly no Idea how hard it is to write a song, besides why would you come here searching for lyrics to a song you don't like. Looks we have a rather large case of "TROLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO-itis"

I'm out, peace.
