Higher Ground Lyrics
Artist: Stevie Wonder
Album: Higher Ground
People keep on learnin'
Soldiers keep on warrin'
World keep on turnin'
Cause it won't be too long
Powers keep on lyin'
While your people keep on dyin'
World keep on turnin'
Cause it won't be too long
I'm so darn glad he let me try it again
Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then
Gonna keep on tryin'
Till I reach the highest ground
Teachers keep on teachin'
Preachers keep on preachin'
World keep on turnin'
Cause it won't be too long
Oh no
Lovers keep on lovin'
Believers keep on believin'
Sleepers just stop sleepin'
Cause it won't be too long
Oh no
I'm so glad that he let me try it again
Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then
Gonna keep on tryin'
Till I reach my highest ground...Whew!
Till I reach my highest ground
No one's gonna bring me down
Oh no
Till I reach my highest ground
Don't you let nobody bring you down (they'll sho 'nuff try)
God is gonna show you higher ground
He's the only friend you have around

"great song"
wow that is a nice song
I plan on doing this one using interpretive sign language for my "learning sign language" class.
This wonderful man is prolific. I've been listening to his music since he did Finger tips part one at the Apollo Theater back in 68 ot 69....it was one of my graduation presents. He fascinated me then and to this day this beautiful man still fascinates me with his soulful lyrics and his beautiful song styling. Love me some Stevie...
Wrong lurics. Its good up until the last 8 lines.

The God of second chance is calling
Rock on Stevie, one of the best songs ever, especially when you do it. Huge fan of your music and my God bless you for standing up for Him. L&R, Rick
Love Stevie's songs, but he never quite got the scansion thing down.
I like the red hot chili peppers cover better
The RHCP version is great too, especially the one on David Letterman. But Stevie's live version in 1973 on you tube is a classic.
I like both versions of this song. Stevie's is soulful and RHCP's hard. I like to listen them back to back.
this is a good song! now i understand what it means because i found the lyrics!!! :)
Loved this song...just learned the lyrics. Bummed its about the false belief of reincarnation...we are appointed once to die. Then the judgement. Truth...there actually is one.
Right on Jean! Cool song....wrong belief.
AIGOO
This song is not about reincarnation. According to Stevie, it is about second chances. He believes he was given a second chance when he was almost killed in a car accident. If you truly believe in God, then you know that He is all about second, third or however many chances we need until we finally figure it out. If you really think that this song has anything to do with reincarnation and feel the need to judge Stevie accordingly, then you need to take your second chance because God doesn't leave it up to you to decide.
we did this for worship service... could not believe my ears. so blessed.

Deni, this song was released almost three months BEFORE his near fatal car crash; initially, reincarnation was the focus. It wasn't about being reborn, via the X-tian belief system. It was recorded and released in May '73, while his accident was in Aug '73. More than likely, the lyrics were written many months or years before he laid the final tracks...as was common practice for Stevie. The Bible actually speaks about reincarnation...but, oh well.
