All The Time

-Words and Lyrics by Barry Manilow and Marty Panzer
All the time I thought there's only me
Crazy in a way that no one else could be
I would have given everything I own
If someone would have said "you're not alone"
All the time I thought that I was wrong
Wanting to believe but needing to belong
If I'd've just believed in all I had
If someone would have said "you're not so bad"
CHORUS
All the time, all the wasted time
All the years waiting for a sign
To think I had it all
All the time
All the time I thought there's only me
Crazy in a way that no one else could be
I can't believe that you were somewhere, too
Thinking all the time there's only you
CHORUS

Comments/Interpretations
The second time he sings the chorus, "to think I had it all" becomes "to think we had it all". Very helpful. =D
"Wanting to BELIEVE but needing to belong" is supposed to be "Wanting to BE ME but needing to belong."
I have always enjoyed performing this song but today it has new meaning for me and I truly know that " I had it all the time".
I have played the song many times on my tape plsyer, and I am convinced that the song can be compaired with ones born sexuality, it really describes my being gay. I wish that I had known earlier in my life, but had to be satisfied with learning at age 25!
Knowing Manilow is gay makes it understandable one would interpret this ballad that way. Being very spiritual but not gay, I've always considered this song about finding the truth about oneself in any sense of it then realizing as human beings we are all sharing the experience. No matter what it ie, you are not alone. Rejoice once you realize that. Gotta love interpretive art...it all depends where you're standing as you look at it.
This song has always invoked a feeling of "sadness" in me. Although, 35 or so years ago, I was so young that I had not experianced anough life to compare what I had VS. had not, at 52, it's TOTALLY differtent story for me.
Que tal sentimiento pone barry en la interpretación...thanks Mr. Manilow
This song struck home for me when it was first released. Being an artsy person and never fitting in, it helped me validate being myself instead of conforming. Remember the wierd kid in high school everyone poked fun at? Well, that was me. And guess what? I have accomplished more doing the things I love than most of the people who made me so miserable. Thanks Barry for giving me, and so many others, our anthem. Love you forever.
