Missing The War Lyrics
Artist: Ben Folds Five
Album: Whatever And Ever Amen
All is quiet his tired eyes
see figures jotted down
And clothes all strewn around
the bedroom flood
Now nothing's adding up
And nothing's making sense
She's sleeping like a baby
She doesn't like a baby
She doesn't know he wasn't meant for this
I'm missing the war
I'm missing the war all night
Missing the war
He drove home again
Pissed and beaten
Its really no big deal
It happens all the time
Its no big deal
I'm missing the war
I'm missing the war all night
Missing the war
I'm missing the war
'Till beads of sunlight hit me in the morning
So much time so little to say
Time may fly
And dreams may die
The shaking voice that tells him go
Still thinks he might
He knows he won't
I'm missing the war
Missing the war all night
Missing the war

Comments/Interpretations
Line 8 does not actually appear in the song.
This song's meaning is pretty obvious, it's about a young couple who are just coming out of their "crazy" days and the girl is ready to settle down before the guy is. "The war" is either means literally a war because he's a veteran or it could mean the crazy twenties life with nothing tying him down etc.
Regardless of what they were trying to say, it's still a great song!
I have another interpretation....
A Guy goes out for the night, meets a girl, takes her home. late into the evening, after she's fallen asleep, as he's falling asleep with tired eyes, he looks around noticing all their clothes strewn everywhere, her number (figures) jotted down on a piece of paper, and starts wondering, as she's fallen asleep, whether it's where he's supposed to be - if this is the right path. and then he thinks over his ex girlfriend, and about how he misses her. It's about missing the war between an ex lover. missing the fights, missing the arguments, missing fighting for something (a relationship)
I think missing the war, is meant to mean he is missing out on opportunity. People his age are out and about meeting fresh new people, while his story has climaxed and now time is just winding down.
The war could be the war on TV. He likes parts of the relationship, but isn't really made to devote his life to one other person. He'd rather be on his own, watching CNN live coverage of the war than sleeping over at her house. But he doesn't want to lose her eitjer, so he's missing the war all night.
