Captain Jack Lyrics
Artist: Billy Joel
Saturday night and you're still hangin' around
Tired of living in your one horse town
you'd like to find a little hole in the ground,
for awhile..
So you go to the village in your tie dyed jeans
And you stare at the junkies and the closet queens
It's like some pornographic magazine
And you smile
(chorus)
Captain Jack will get you high tonight
And take you to your special island
Captain Jack will get you by tonight
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'
Oh yeah,...
Your sister's gone out, she's on a date
You just sit at home and masturbate
Your phone is gonna ring soon, but you just can't wait
For that call
So you stand on the corner in your New English clothes
and you look so polished from your hair down to your toes
Ah but still your fingers gonna pick your nose
After all,..
(chorus)
So you decide to take a holiday
You got your tape deck and your brand new Chevrolet
Ah, there ain't no place to go anyway
What for?
So you got everything, ah, but nothing's cool
They just found your father in the swimming pool
And you guess you won't be going back to school
Anymore.
(chorus)
So you play your albums, and you smoke your pot
and you meet your girlfriend in the parking lot
Oh but still you're aching for the things you haven't got
What went wrong?
And if you can't understand why your world is so dead,
why you've got to keep in style and feed your head
Well you're 21 and still your mother makes your bed,
And that's too long
(chorus)
(chorus)

Comments/Interpretations
on the final verse its wrong it goes
"Oh but still you're aching for the things you HAVE NOT got"
In the final chorus it goes "Captain Jack will MAKE YOU DIE tonight"
This is fantastic!
You do know that Captain Jack is another name for heroin
No way, the final verse is definitely right. I just listened to it- it says haven't, not have not. I'm 100% positive.
Captain Jack Off
Well Sara's right. The final chorus it goes "Captain Jack will make You Die tonight"
It's definitely haven't got. Joel you are wrong.
I thought the final chorus was "Captain Jack will break your thigh tonight".
masterbates spelled wrong...i would no
he says in the last verse " Captian Jack could make you die tonight"
Masturbate is spelled correctly Beastly, maybe you should go back to school. It is "haven't" not "have not"
Masturbate is spelled correctly, you moron.
Beastly -- learn to spell. Apparently, "masturbate" and "know" (vs. "no") are beyond your simpleton vocabulary.
Captain Jack isn't heroin...he was the local drug dealer where Billy grew up in levittown.
No, I'm sorry to tell you Jarlaxle; Captain Jack was my Great Uncle and he was not the local drug dealer there. He was one of Billy's good friends from the very beginning and told him that he would title one of his first songs for him. That's not to say that they didn't get high together every once and a while. (Though I don't think that was Uncle Jack's style; he did like to drink though.) Everyone on the island knew Uncle Jack and could vouch for him that he was a really good man.
Captain Jack is either heroin or liquer
either way it makes sense
i think that its liquer like rum or something
captain jack can meen heroin or Jack Daniels but I'm fairly certain the song is about a heroin "just a little push"dealer and not this tards uncle.
So you got everything, ah, but nothing's cool
They just found your father in the swimming pool
And you guess you won't be going back to school
Anymore.
Did the father drown himself?
songs says it all
what do you suppose captain jack is?
just something people use to comfort themselves, or is he literally criticizing some lazy person?
for the "haven't" or "have not" thing, he sings it differently in different recordings....on Piano Man he sings "haven't", but in Songs In The Attic, he says "have not"
I LOVE this song, it's my favorite Billy Joel song. I think Captain Jack can be liquor or heroine, or anything you get off on that makes you feel better. I know a heroine addict I can't stand, so I'd hate to think of that person when I hear a song I love so much.
of course its heroine...a little push...you know, a syringe....you push it to inject it. Not rocket science.
You are thinking of the live version in Songs In The Attic.
I have ever head enough I been a while man I saying this is Jeff hardy cry man I can been a whole that I can not believe it this is happens to through a not of through a lot of the year of seem to be a like Joel dead
Flower Joel dead
It's Captain Jack Sparrow, the pirate. And Captain Jack will make you die because he's cursed. Keira Knightly is gorgeous.
how does this smack junkie afford a brand new chevorlet and a tape deck?
hahahaha how rude is this?
he can afford it cause he still lives with his parents. Maybe we can assume they bought it for him.
nice
Captain Jack is his dealer... duh!
Read the Wikipedia entry. It's an anti-drug song he wrote while looking out his window watching suburban teenagers buying heroin from a drug dealer called Captain Jack. There was a really funny incident when this song was played by accident at a Hillary Clinton campaign rally in New York instead of 'New York State of Mind'. Whoops.
@ Chris Talmeth
lol... First, "Smack Junkie" is a redundancy.
Second, despite what you see on after school specials and on 60 minutes, not all heroin users are homeless AIDS patients.
Hundreds of thousands of them are normal, every-day, fully functional people. You'll just never know about their recreational activities because our society puts almost as much stigma on I.V. drug use as it does on pedophiles... So they keep it to themselves.
Not to say it's a recommended pasttime or anything... It can and does mess a lot of people up. Just sayin'... You probably know a few junkies yourself and are completely unaware that they get high.
Oh. And LMMFAO @ Emily... Uncle Jack played you for a sucker lil' mama. You done got lied to, BIG TIME.
I've always assumed it was heroin ... but maybe Captain Jack is just any vice we turn to: drugs, drink, people we shouldn't be spending time with. What I do know is that it's a classic song.
You're both right. As a songwriter, some lyrics are specific and some are stream of thought, just surfing the wave of emotion. And many people will say of heroin, they can take it or leave it, how many do you know who have left it? Permanately.
@ Emily I'm pretty sure you're a liar. And I do believe this song may be about drugs, but nobody knows except Billy Joel.
I'M the CAPTAIN!!! Do you hear ME!!! III'M the CAPTAIN!!! I'll get cha high tonight....you know it baby....Because I'm the captain... This song SUCKS!
You are All right! That's the beauty of music, and we all get to take the meaning we want from it! Billy Joel Rocks!
I believe the song is in reference to Captain Jack Harkness of Dr Who and Torchwood fame.... Its obvious really
its time to smoke
Captain Jack is a dealer that dealt in the projects across from where Joel's apt was in Long Island. It's where the inspiration for the "anti drug" song came from. This comes directly from Joel in an interview in '74. He couldn't understand what was so wrong in a young teenager's life that they had to shoot smack.
It's just a bad a$$ tune, no matter the inspiration.
It's Miami 2017 and at the height of Summer, in Highland Falls I met a Streetlife Serenador from Los Angelenos. I thought She's got a Way with people but Everybody loves You now so why do i care? Well i Say goodbye to Hollywood because its Captain Jack i want to go and see. I can introduce him to Billy the Kid and sing a Ballad about Your Home. Anyway, I've loved these days. Ahhh! Songs in the Attic - brilliant.
The song is about Heroin, for sure.
And, Captain Jack was a drug dealer, for sure.
If anyone has any doubts about it listen to the interview Billy did on the Howard Stern show. He explains it all there.
The Village should be capital. He's talking about The East Village or Greenwich Village in NYC
Captain jack is NOT heroin, is about Whiskey (Jack Daniels).
Billy...Too much real info out there by now for you to say this, When you leave school today do some reading and you can find what the writer of the song says its about. Captain jack is a Drug dealer and he deals heroin..But maybe Billy Joel could be wrong LOL
Guys, you're ALL wrong. The 'Captain Jack' Billy Joel is referring to in this song is obviously Captain Jack Harkness, the infamous adulterer from Doctor Who/Torchwood. Get your shit together, people. Lol
You may be right. I might be crazy. But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for. Captain Jack's the lunatic BJ refers to in his other song. Serious! I know this for a fact. There's nothing looney about me. I'm William Joel's second cousin and we're close - like brothers. Only I'm a chick. So I guess I'm more like his sister.
I've always assumed Capt Jack was rhyming slang for 'smack'. 'A little push and you'll be smiling' - a push on the syringe.. 'meet your girlfriend in the parking lot'.. Sounds like he's scoring..heroin is always referred to a woman.
I thought Captain Jack was a space alien
Captain Jack is money and its accrual.
Ok, so I just got off the phone with Billy and he said Captian Jack is a dealer in the village. The guy in the song is a spoilt rich kid who is wasting his life on drugs; Captain Jack getting him high. However things take a bad turn when the boys father drowns.
Oh and the Billy I got off the phone with is Billy Andrews from Augusta GA .. lol
