Scenes From An Italian Restaurant Lyrics
Artist: Billy Joel
Album: Turnstiles
A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rose instead
We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place
You and I,face to face
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
In our Italian Restaurant.
Things are okay with me these days
Got a good job, got a good office
Got a new wife, got a new life
And the family's fine
We lost touch long ago
You lost weight I did not know
You could ever look so good after
So much time.
I remember those days hanging out
At the village green
Engineer boots, leather jackets
And tight blue jeans
Drop a dime in the box play the
Song about New Orleans
Cold beer, hot lights
My sweet romantic teenage nights
Brenda and Eddie were the
Popular steadys
And the king and the queen
Of the prom
Riding around with the car top
Down and the radio on.
Nobody looked any finer
Or was more of a hit at the
Parkway Diner
We never knew we could want more
Than that out of life
Surely Brenda and Eddie would
Always know how to survive.
Brenda and Eddy were still going
Steady in the summer of '75
when they decided the marriage would
Be at the end of July
Everyone said they were crazy
"Brenda you know you're much too lazy
Eddie could never afford to live that
Kind of life."
But there we were wavin' Brenda and
Eddie goodbye.
They got an apartment with deep
Pile carpet
And a couple of paintings from Sears
A big waterbed that they bought
With the bread
They had saved for a couple
Of years
They started to fight when the
Money got tight
And they just didn't count on
The tears.
They lived for a while in a
Very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter
Of course
And they parted the closest
Of friends
Then the king and the queen went
Back to the green
But you can never go back
There again.
Brenda and Eddie had had it
Already by the summer of '75
Fromhe high to the low to
The end of the show
For the rest of their lives
They couldn't go back to
The greasers
The best they could do was
Pick up the pieces
We always knew they would both
Find a way to get by
That's all I heard about
Brenda nd Eddie
Can't tell you more than I
Told you already
And here we are wavin' Brenda
And Eddie goodbye.
A bottle of red, aa bottle of white
Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight
I'll meet you anytime you want
In our Italian Restaurant.

Comments/Interpretations
Best song ever
piece of art from the the heart
The last stanza is;
A bottle of REDS, a bottle of WHITES
....
Definitely multiples at the end...it's part of the humor of the story.
this song is amazing,,, piano solo !!
:o! wow
i'll meet you any time you want in our italian restaurant i love this song
this is such a great song, very well written, i wish our generation wrote songs like this - I wish our generation just wrote their own songs!
BJ was such a great artist, and this song is a Classic!
the brilliant lyrics and the haunting melody break your heart and mend it all at the same time.
billy joel is defintly part italian, i mean come on he looks like a way less buff version of sylvester stallone
i lov dis song!!!!
I dated Brenda for a while after she broke up with Eddie.... She was quite a nice piece. !!
Andy who wrote on 06.25.08 is right. The last verse refers to bottles of pills - reds and whites.
This song with the various tempos reminds me of Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. You are in good company Billy!!!
Can't say enough. Grew up in Philly and this song just takes me back. I love Billy!.
this is the best song ever me and my mum love it and fantastic lyrics.xx
LANDMARK HORSESHIT
can't get enough of it. love. it.
just the best....the later BJ never met this total classic standard.Up with the all time best...
All time favorite Billy Joel song. Just great.
LOVE THIS SONG. CASEY AND DEBBIE .ALL I GOTTA SAY.
A song with great vocals, lyrics, instruments, story and heart
How this song isn't one of the best ever I will never know...
EXCELLENT!! Any other artist would surely broke this lyrics into 2 or 3 smallest songs!! & still have 2 or 3 hits out of this!!
The album's not Turnstiles but The Stranger - - best album, maybe!
loved this song from being a teenager its fantastic xx
Billy Joel es el mejor cantante que he escuhado en mi vida, su talento y estilo es de lo mejor.
Dios bendiga a Billy Joel.
where the heck can i guy the instrumental?
Now, compare this music, this talent, this genuine ability to entertain with the garbage that passes for "entertainment" these days....
Genius!
Whatever man,"it's still rockin roll to me"!
its rosé in the second line. not rose
Just great!!! Love billy!!
Love love love this song!!! PNut!
Great sat night get pissed n sing along song. Love it!!!! Not sure neighbours do. Lol. :)
so epic watched this in schoool
Every time I listen to this song it gets stuck in my head for the whole day... And I am always okay with that.
This is actually three songs Billy couldn't finish so he put them all together 1 bottle of red 2 things are ok and 3 Brenda and eddy. I was so amazed when I heard him say that in an interview, but I can see it clearly now, the are three entirely different songs made into one
I'm pretty sure the "multiples" thing where it becomes "reds" and "whites" is just the way he's articulating + microphone hiss. Check a live recording and look at his lips - he's not making an "s" noise; it's just the plosive making the mic hiss.
I really like this song, but unless I'm misunderstanding, the timing for Brenda and Eddie makes no sense. If they married at the end of July in 75, lived together for a while after they were married... how could they have "had it" by the summer of 75? Also, if it all happened that quickly, they could still go back to their lives as is. Just sayin'
The "it" they had had was their lives before they married. Being married wasn't as good as the earlier "it."
Seriously... The piano solo on this music is just breath taking. True piece of art. Billy Joel is amazing.
Best song ever!
This is and probably always will be the most schizophrenic song I've ever heard.
Mmm yes. Lov me cheese
