Youre So Vain Lyrics

Artist: Carly Simon

You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

Well, I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not, you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you? Don't you?

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you

You're so vain (so vain)
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you? Don't you?

by Heavy G on 1/22/2010 1:25pm
Main Entry: ga·votte
Pronunciation: gə-ˈvät
Function: noun
Etymology: French, from Middle French, from Old Occitan gavato, from gavot Alpine dweller
Date: 1696
1 : a dance of French peasant origin marked by the raising rather than sliding of the feet
2 : a tune for the gavotte in moderately quick 4⁄4 time

— gavotte intransitive verb

David Geffen
by Karl on 2/26/2010 1:55pm
"She tells Uncut magazine, "You know what, I'm just going to tell you this. The answer is on the new version of You're So Vain, on my new record Never Been Gone. There's a little whisper and it's the answer to the puzzle."

The singer whispers Geffen's name backwards in the track, according to Britain's The Sun newspaper.

Geffen ran Simon's Elektra record label at the time of the song's release and instead of being about a failed relationship, the lyrics are now thought to hint at the singer's lingering resentment after Geffen allegedly put more effort into promoting rival star Joni Mitchell."

by Can you Handel my music puns? on 4/22/2010 1:45pm
I think this line is about how her dreams were gone. she had some big dreams for her and her beau but they disappeared after he was a jerk. Have you noticed how the milk looks like clouds after you pour it into your coffee mug before it all blends together? So the clouds are her dreams but then everything blends so you can't differentiate the milk from the coffee, therefore, the dreams are lost. At least thats my interpretation. This is a really great song :)

this melody just sticks in my head, i love it! i think the 'clouds in my coffee' means that her dreams (for their future together) were intangible and fleeting and evaporated - like clouds. all she really had was coffee - representing the tangible & ordinary life, clouded by her imagination? isn't it ironic that the song really IS about him tho, ha ha.

by Charles on 12/29/2010 8:52am
The song is about the sudden realization the writer had that the guy is totally consumed by himself and has been since well before she ever met him. She had an "ah ha" moment. The man is totally incapable of love because to love you must give of yourself and he is so consumed by himself he has no capacity to give anything real of himself. The song is about the writer's expanded understanding of herself gained through a changed comprehension of the man she has come to understand as he really is and not how he presented himself.

I think she has most everyone fooled...I think this song is really about Charles William Donaldson who "jilted" on her when she was coming to Britain to marry him...the timeline doesn't add up for me for Beatty, Taylor, Jagger etc. Song came out in 72 I believe...she sings "several years ago" meaning probably mid-60's.

by Jessica on 4/5/2012 8:21am
I think the song is about more than one person, or relationship. She wanted to mix it up and confuse people and that way if they thought it was about them it was and it wasn't going on to show they were in fact vain. Why would you call someone vain for thinking you’re referring to them if you are? The art of vagueness lol Just saying... I do it all the time… it’s called fb.

" Son of a gun" was directed to the base player Klaus. It was the first time Carly heard him play and she was so impressed she said " son of a gun" after he opened up for the song and the director left it on the track.

Personally, I doubt it's Mick Jagger. I have had the honor of meeting people who have known him. They had only good things to say about him; every one of them. . . Just saying.

The song, which was rumored for years to be about one of her ex-boyfriends (like Warren Beatty or Mick Jagger), was actually written about gay record label boss David Geffen.

The answer came to fans after Carly admitted the name of the Vain person was whispered in the new acoustic version of the song off her upcoming album Never Been Gone. After listening to it, sources say the singer whispers Geffen's name backwards on the track.

So while for years the speculation was that song was intended to be an angry-bitter break-up song, now the lyrics take on a new meaning. Some suggest that Carly is signing about her resentment towards Geffen when he allegedly put more effort into promoting rival star Joni Mitchell.

And there you have it! Not as exciting as you thought it would be, huh?

The Geffen theory has been dispelled. Simon didn't meet Geffen until 3 years after the song was written and 1 year after it was released. Numerous people in the know have already refuted it as well.
