Memories Lyrics
Artist: Cats
Album: Memories
Midnight - not a sound from the pavement.
Has the moon lost her memory,
She is smiling alone.
In the lamplight, the withered leaves collect at my feet,
And the wind begins to moan.
Memory - all alone in the moonlight.
I can smile at the old days,
I was beautiful then.
I remember the time I knew what happiness was.
Let the memory live again.
Every street light seems to beat a fatalistic warning.
Someone mutters and the streetlamp gutters,
and soon it will be morning.
Daylight, I must wait for the sunrise.
I must think of a new life,
And I mustn't give in.
When the dawn comes tonight will be a memory too,
And a new day will begin.
Burnt out ends of smokey days,
the stale cold smell of morning.
The streetlamp dies, another night is over,
another day is dawning.
Touch me, it's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun.
If you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is.
Look, a new day has begun.

Comments/Interpretations
Thanks! Now I can sing my daughter the real words to more than just the first verse. I've had to sing made up stuff for the other verses, like "Memory, I don't know what words go here, so I'll just have to add them, and the song will be short. . ." She's never heard the real song, and she's only 3 1/2, so it has been working. With the lyrics to all of the stanzas, we might manage with just one song instead of the three to four she usually requests! :)
This is the best song from the musical Cats. The song should be a classic instantly!
Few Songs can be heard from a great voice thuis is no exception.
One of my favorites from any Musicla IN RECENT MEMORY!
Thanks a lot....
I think this is the most beutifull song I have ever heard in my life. thank you all for making this so beautiful for people to hear.
i love this song
Wonderful song
I originally thought that the last verse of Memories from Cats was the only, or rather the most important part of the whole Cats outpourings. But no, the words start with basically a summary of what it's like to be a cat followed by an expansion of meaning to reveal the truths about an ordinary ally cat figure...with gorgeous results for all....
