The Road To Hell (Part II) Lyrics

Artist: Chris Rea
Album: The Road To Hell

Well I'm standing by a river
But the water doesn't flow
It boils with every poison you can think of
And I'm underneath the streetlight
But the light of joy I know
Scared beyond belief way down in the shadows
And the perverted fear of violence
Chokes the smile on every face
And common sense is ringing out the bell
This ain't no technological breakdown
Oh no, this is the road to hell

And all the roads jam up with credit
And there's nothing you can do
It's all just bits of paper flying away from you
Oh look out world, take a good look
What comes down here
You must learn this lesson fast and learn it well
This ain't no upwardly mobile freeway
Oh no, this is the road
Said this is the road
This is the road to hell

One of the most under-rated songs.
A great song with a message. Successful in depicting what it wanted to show us.

"jam up with credit" means "jam up with cars". since most cars are bought on credit ... but seems like no one cares, song was out 18 years ago, look around you, you see people got message?
by Slobodan Pijevac on 11/3/2008 8:10am
You said no one cares for credits!? After this big financial crisis delivered from American real estate market everyone will think twice before go to bank for loan - NO WAY MAN! I am very happy that stupid bank officials finally showed their real faces full of greed.

Gud Lyrics, gracefully sung. love to hear it again n again
by Colin on 2/18/2009 8:16pm
The song begins by talking about excess-drugs, industrial pollution, etc. Then he's talking about how witnessing the world as it is, scares the living hell out of him and the fear has taken their smiles.
Second part is about society's excess in the form of lifestyle (keeping up with the jones's) and if we don't recognize it, it will eventually catch up with us. Money, money, money....the road to hell.
by Karla on 3/15/2009 4:46pm
This song brings my old memories from childhood, when I was driving with my father behind the wheel. I did not have any idea what the lyrics were about but I could hear the fear... It is a really special song for me, helps to keep my father in my head. Thank you Chris.

Indeed a gr8 song, good husky voice. Heard it on the UK radio when it was on the charts in 1989... Wonder why no one in the media invoke Chris Rea's "Road To Hell" during the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen...

This is one of those songs I avoid listening to too much, so I can savour it afresh each time.

When I heard him say, years ago, "And all the roads jam up with credit" I said to myself, "You too know it's coming, dontcha, Chris?" my mind was on slowly crippling global economy, sucking one country after another into the debt trap.

Prescient, Chris.

He describes how ill our minds are, still now in the 21 centuries(human beings). There is no hope, only clear minds with deep consciousness, in small steps... , perhaps starts to live in other ways, we have only these small chance... and never forget, the human life is the greatest experiment given by natur... what exists in the universe... so we should try to live in CONSCIOUS...

Does anyone besides me have trouble listening to this song any less than two hours a day. This is a great song - so happy I discovered it. I recently"discovered" this one and Blue Cafe. Before that, I had only heard "Fool if you think it's over" by CR. Love his guitar, vocals and thought-provoking lyrics. Truly one of a kind.
Thanks Chris!
