Johnny B Goode Lyrics
Artist: Chuck Berry
Deep down Louisiana close to New Orleans
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood
Where lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode
Who never ever learned to read or write so well
But he could play the guitar just like a ringing a bell
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode
He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track
Oh, the engineerswould see him sitting in the shade
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made
People passing by they would stop and say
Oh my that little country boy could play
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode
His mother told him "Someday you will be a man,
And you will be the leader of a big old band.
Many people coming from miles around
To hear you play your music when the sun go down
Maybe someday your name will be in lights
Saying Johnny B. Goode tonight."
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode

Perfect lyrics except theres an extra "go" at the end
this songs pretty tight yo.
fasntastic to be able to refer to critical cultural materials such as Mr berry's lyrics and we are deeply grateful for the work you do..should be government sponsored or funded at the very least..Many thanks again
Harry your dumb as fuck man. those lyrics are perfect. If you listen to the right song dumbass you would know what is right and what is wrong. and my friend you are the who is wrong. pay attention dumb fuck!

People passing by they would stop and say
Oh my BECAUSE that little country boy could play
loco dale presta atencion.
I like this song i have first heard it in the movie "Back 2 the future"
It is a world class Chuck Berry song.
Who every plays it.
haha, i heard it in back 2 the future too!
Just watching Back Top The Future on ITV2 now. Great Song just wanted to find out what all he lyrics were.
this lyrics rules, HARRY it isn't a matha fuckin' xtra "go" in the end, so shut the f*ck up
very good for this music. i like it
always reminds me of back to the future and chuck berry's fictional cousin marvin!! lol
oh my! but* that little country boy.....
falan, I do think you are right!
also, in the first stanza isn't it "there stood a little shack made of earth and wood."
i may be wrong but that is my recollection
Is that a tom-tom briefly playing during the line 'there stood a log cabin made of earth and wood'?
cheers, now i can sing this while i play guitar, all time classic, sounds awesome =]
AMO ESTA CANCION!
AMO ESTE TEMA=)
There isn't a fu**ing "go" at the and!!! -.-
deep down in* louisiana...
to hear you play your music till* the sun...
He plays the guitar just like his ringing the bell
This is a great song! It will always remind me of Back 2 the Future with Michael J. Fox up on stage. lol Go Johnny Go Go!!!!
Not quite perfect lyrics, someone mentioned something with the "people passing by they would stop and say oh my because that little country boy could play". They had the right idea, but the word is actually BUT not BECAUSE. Sing it to yourself.
He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track
Oh, the engineers would see him sitting in the shade
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made
People passing by they would stop and say
Oh my BUT that little country boy could play
The lyrics are near perfect, extremly good job, thank you for listening closely and getting everything down, I appreciate it.
Ok now secondly, wow pepople who swear like you guys about other people's suggestions are just wow...swearing makes you tough on the internet? That's cool then...
he got more of the song that i did. cut the guy some slack
you rock johnny b goode is the best song ever written.rock and roll, goode job.
Absolutely the best R&R song ever written.
I think Keith Richards said "Rock& Roll begins and ends with Chuck Berry"
Dear God, I really worry that even saying "hi" on this thread is going to get me flamed. Chill out guys!
Without wanting to make too much of a fuss, there isn't an extra "go" at the end, but on some versions there is an extra chorus at the end.
And also, I think that there could be an extra go sort of at the end, because it's in the first line of the last chorus.
Now I just need to keep an eye out for sniper rifles from now till Christmas....
James you are a fucking bastard... Nick is right is Oh my because that little country boy could play. So fuck you..
fucking awesome song
James desperately needs referring to an anger management clinic. Anyone have a number for him? How about you Goat Tit? Or perhaps you Scumbom?
Great song! I first heard it from the classic film Back To The Future. Like both Chuck Berry's and Marty Mcfly With The Starlighters versions.
THE LYRICS AND SONG ARE PERFECT THATS WHY IM GOIN TO PLAY IN FRONT OF EVERYONE
ermm im just gonna say blues is meant to be a bit free flowing so people have thier own variations of this song. ive personally made up my own verse to this based on my own experiences. so all u sadacts who listen to songs far too closely and have too much spare time chill out and enjoy life!!
you missed IN louisiana
It's not only a rock and roll theme, it's not only a rock and roll anthem, it's "the" rock and roll anthem. Long live Chuck Berry, be proud of such an american ambassador. Not like those criminal suckers that you put in white house.
Not exactly there Jack....try about 10 years before Keith Richards...it was John Lennon who said that
I nailed my girlfriend for the first time listening to this song
your lyrics are fully sickbro jus mazing
I love this song and I also llove teh gituar! Awesome song and I would love learn to play like he does! -Love-Surfing-fun-
'Goat Tit' You are awfully rude. GET A LIFE!
Best Rock n Roll ever!!!
viva el rock
Mr. Mike... actually, John Lennon said, "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'."
Last line in first verse should read: But he could play a* guitar just like a ringin' a bell
The Song!!!!
Go Johnny Go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Add "in" before "Louisiana".
chuck berry magari kacia
THIS SONG DESTROYS EVERYTHING ever hear the cover by george thorgood ITS AWSOME
jeff b is right
what asong . never tired of listening to it
"I never thought of learning how to play the guitar,
but it were all those thoughts that I wanted to start,
And get to see how the life of Chuck Berry,
Changed post he sang Johnny B. Goode tonight..."
People say I am a very good poet and song writer, I want to make my own band someday soon and so looking for like minded people who can play amazing music... something like Chuck Berry.
dude guys.... just because they hear the song differently doesn't mean you should tell them to shut up because you think their wrong (hint hint: goat tit) you need to calm down cause it's just a song
go
Johnny go...
Govt. Funding....Govt. Funding....Govt. Funding....Govt. Funding....Govt. Funding.
cool dude
Thanks to 'Back to the Future' I am now obsessed with this song!
markucci siempre te vamos a extrañar :s
tan buen tema AGUANTE LOS PAMPAS RUGBY sta.fe
masterpiece
This song is amazing and the lyrics are pretty much spot on, what does it matter if their not though, how many times have you seen a band live and heard variations on the songs that you love? It's just part of the experience. Besides this website isn't the bible of rock and roll lyrics, Jesus it's just a reference site, if you don't agree with it then set up your own.
I've been playing this song for the last 25yrs and like Chuck the lyrics differ slightly each performance. It's rock & roll after all!!!
the best song of rck n' roll!!!
chuck rulez!!
Hi there, there is an extra go at the end for every one information... v good lyrics
its ok song but not my taste off music I like pop music like vanessa hudgens and ashley tisdale and kylie minogue it is not what i like xxxgeorgia wass
This is the best song ever!!!! I love it in Back to the Future!!!! I'm under 11 and I love that music!!!!
It's totally ammazziinng - you cant NOT love it :)
This is a very good song, thanks for the lyrics mate and every one bitching about getting the lyrics dead right, really need to get out more! I mean who cares about an extra 'go', seriously!!!! Get a clue fool... mmmwah x
theres right amount of go ;)
She is right
zeikerd
mnogoq qka pesni4ka breeeeeee
Awesome song, it's a perfect classic. Big LOL @ Megz (which is the only reason I'm writing here.
According to Chuck Berry's original there IS the correct amount of "Go's" and I think it is "Oh my, BUT that little country boy could play." As if Johnny was rocking out hard core, making a spectacle of himself (think Marty's act on stage in Back to the Future). Peace out, dudes & dudettes!
I'm junior high scool student of Japanese.I love this song!!
Thank you.
I just played the Chuck Berry version on Winamp and checked every word and every line - kept pausing it and replaying it.
There are 3 small errors - 2 words left out and one "the" that should be "a".
1. Deep down IN Louisiana (add the word IN)
2. he could play A guitar just like ringing a bell (not THE guitar)
3. Oh my BUT that little country boy could play (add the word BUT)
And I played and replayed the last chorus and the number of "go's" shown is definitely correct - there is no extra go needed.
you all should hear the Grateful Dead cover this masterpiece!
dude i love this song, it is classic chuck berry! thanks for the lyrics!
love this osng, classic berry! thanks for the lyrics!
In the end of the version i have there sure is go go go totaly sure of it!
love it
Great song! I sang to the lyrics while listening to the song and I'm surprized that the lyrics I found online were correct for once.
What's with all the swearing just look at the lyrics in the cd cover. Get over it.
good lyrics
didnt miss a word!
oh yes i love this song <3
kick ass song, and the jimi hendrix version is fucking amazing
I fucking LOVE this song! I heard this song the first time in "back 2 the future", but the text that they sing in that movie ain't the right one :( 2 bad, but it still rocks!
It's just perfect, no extra go, at least in the studio version (perhaps you've got a live version?).
Never was quite sure of the exact lyrics...so I'll take your word for it ! Chuck wrote it... Jimi Hendrix played the shit out of it live ( one of my top 5 all time favorite songs) and it STILL kicks ass today....simply CLASSIC !!!
i love that song instead of go johnny go it should be go chuck go
F'ing classic shit.
The lyrics are SUPER good!! I love the song too! :)
yall arent even close..
"well his mama told him oneday you will be a man, and you will be the leader of a big ole band"
people gonna come from miles around, to listen to you play till the sun goes down"
Given all the incredible amount of descriptive words in the English language it shows a pitifully limited intellect to have to resort to the offensive swear words so often used by correspondents.
yeah the go's are all messed up but good
go go
hehe
Allright !
Blues allwats rocks !
OH NO U DIDNT
Hey Jared, that's so cool. I'm a Geezer and I heard it and loved it 1st time around.
Ya don't have to SWEAR! SOOOO Much
Geez
Great song though
perfect song,NOW STOP SWEARING RETARDS
I LOVE THE WHOLE OF THE START BEFORE HE STARTS SINGIN!
the lyrics is good except there's one extra go at the end and you forgot to space engineers and would.
Im god so i cant be wrong so calm down its a good lyric sheet so its missing an "in" or a "go" who the FUCK care.....
Blasphemy!!!!!!!!!
Yup, god is right.
I just want to say when you're up on stage singing this, the lyrics often change slightly. Anyone who performs regularly knows this. For those think you have to have an extra go, or are having a hemorrhage about one or two words, relax. Some songs have four or five versions of lyrics and no one is going to shoot the other person for changing the original. Listen to all the versions of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen out there. Enough said.
its a good song i first heard of it when Marty McFly played it in Back to The Future part 1
hey, just saw how many 'fucks' were in the comments, so i thought i'd add one more...
fuck! :)
I agree god your a great father
fuck
Judas Priest's version is awesome
top banget lagu ini. go go go
There is no extra go, that "go" is in the song too. thanks for the lirycs.
this song is a oldie and is awesome
Go go go!!
got to dance to it.love it
thanks for that u tried ur best at the lyrics but there some different words reminds me of back to the future
ahah
This is good, but I thought my Thriller was better
This song is so amazing, that it was included in voyager missions, in fact the furthest human objects in the universe.
This song is awsome!!!!!!!!!!!
go johnny go go
There is a "go" too much in the text.
John Lennon once said about this legend, "If Rock n' Roll had another name, it'd be Chuck Berry." And I agree with that, full force. Chuck Berry is a legend.
This song was quite good... i like it...
i agree c berry is a legend...
I'm from Argentinian, I sing in a Blues Band and we do classics american black blues. I love chuck berry's music.
phantastic autobiographic lyrics !!
harry is wrong
it"s rock and roll
amazing :)
Awesome song. George Thorogood did an amazing cover as well....listen if you get chance!
I just brought up a few versions of ole Chucky boy doing videos of his hit and in different versions. They were all done by Chuck Berry and you can find small, little differences such as the following:
"Oh my that BUT* little country boy could play"
OR
"He used to carry his guitar in (LIKE) a gunny sack"
OR
Go sit beneath the (A) tree by the railroad track
OR
"Oh, the engineerS (engineer) would (will) see him sitting in the shade"
Gotta note that it seemed that there were always the same amounts of "gos" in the choruses and just as it is above.
Does it really matter what small differences are on different versions of a song that epitomizes what a Rock & Roll song should sound like? Enjoy them ALL!!!
The gratest soundtrack, i ever heard...Funny and positive:)
people, these lyrics are correct except for some missing spaces, the words you use to 'correct' them are wrong. for example ' like a' ringin' a bell' is slang for 'as easy as ringing a bell' so just get your facts rght before commenting
I'm 10 years old! I can play this on guitar! I'm not kidding! the chords go as followed: a 4 measures d 2 measures a 2 measures e 1 measure d 1 measure a 1 measure e 1 measure. This is a great song. (Oh, and no extra go)
As I know, the beatles did a cover, too. And the same, the rolling stone did one. But they played not as good as Chuck.
Mested up at the end its
go go
go johnny go go go
go johnny go go go
go johnny go go go
Johnny B. Goode
not bad the song
Everything is great and all lyrics except this one are incorrect
perfect song, I just cant heare it and not go dancing
ftryutfyutfyjtdyudtyu
i watched the movie its class i watch part 1 2 and 3
go elvis go!!the king.10x for the lyrics
awesome
Initially I thought these lyrics had some mistakes, however, that was because I was listening to the back to the future version. I then listened to a live Chuck Berry version and these lyrics are correct. Different versions do tend to slightly change lyrics adn phrasing, but that is not reason to get abusive and your knickers in a twist.
these lyrics are completely wrong. you are all gay
Fuck you mother fucking cunts you all should grab the computer mouse and shove it up your ASS, lyrics are MoTHERFUCKING perfect ok?!!! Now go play with traffic!!!
the lyrics are COMPLETELY wrong...get it f***in right
this is the best song ever!!
I and my classmates sing and play this song in a school celebration! This song is fabulous!
im 15 and Elvis is my hero!!! I love his version of this song, tis awesome, i am performer and from personal experience, you generally improvise and try new amazing things when you perform... Some of you really do need to chill about this, arguing about it is offending the magic, soul and sheer existence of rock and roll.
I love you chuck
The first line is wrong. It's Deep down in Jamaica close to Magorville (or close to that) back up in the woods on top of a hill. Everything else is right but that.
The first line is wrong. It's Deep down in Jamaica close to Magorville (or close to that) back up in the woods on top of a hill. Everything else is right but that. And that this is Written by Peter Tosh...
there is not extra go
i could not read all the comments,i got sick . i always thought that the the internet was for people who knew how to write and who were not stupid and hiding behind a computer.
as for the lyrics, even if they are not perfect have you ever heard someone singning this song pronouncing all the words correctly...
by the way i'm french canadian
when the sun goES down
PS love it as interpreted by Judas Priest
I'd like to suggest:
Strumming with the rhythm that the !drivewheels! made.
Mr. Berry might have recalled a memory from his childhood here, the sound of a steam locomotive.
Another proof of his outstanding lyrics.
this song is dabomb
Buahaha THAT is perfect lyrics ?
Really I dont think so, check again when listening a song...
it starts out with "Deep down IN Louisiana..."
wow i love this song now my brother can play his drums to it and i can sing to it i think this is brill.
Listen to the really old Beatles version if you want to hear John Lennon taking liberties with the lyrics. The rhythm is changed slightly and it needs the extra words to plug the holes. eg 'he never learned to read or write a book so well' etc
Thanks for the lyrics, great job.
A pioneer of rock
I like the song. Especially the way it starts off with the electric guitar then how the piano comes in. Man can Chuck Berry play.
Hey Chuck, it's your cousin, Marvin Berry.....
It was a great song when I first heard it on American Bandstand, just enjoy it and don't analyze it to death.
You know that SOUND you been lookin for...
Back to the Future...This is a hit...and pioneers of Rock way before people knew Rock and Marty killed it in the movie when he said ur kids would like it...its dope
thx thx thx
this song is kool because me and my dad love to listen to Johnny B. Goode
I just wanted to know, why on earth there is such a discussion on this site where people yell and scream (at least the internet version of it) about the lyrics.
1 there are many different versions of this song and lyrics can change over time
2 this site is for finding the lyrics, if you already knew them, Why did you come here?
hello america this is the viper here thats it okay byeand one more thing im also gay

huh i like it wen michael j fox plays it!!!!
i prefer chuck berry as the king of rock n roll..:/
Could everyone stop being tight and critical about the lyrics and just enjoy the song?
Who cares if a 'but' or 'the' is in the wrong place!!
back to the future. yo.
My band does a few Chuck Berry songs and sometimes I change the original lyrics (which the above are not)to something Catchy that I like...no harm, no foul...I'm sure Chuck would like it. MORE; If ya have a dead crowd there are a few songs to get em tappin their foot...Jonny B Goode, devil with a blue dress on or Gordon Lightfoot's "Lightfoot"...works every time.
Peace to all who tread these words,
Florida George and the all night news boys

pure greatness! thank you Mr. Berry
That song is FREAKING AWESOME!!!!! It is one of my top FAVORITES!!!!!
"Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it."
The R&R standard. Regarding the lyrics, get over yourselves ladies; have fun with it. Check out the Johnny Winter live at Woodstock version. Awesome! Long live Chuck Berry!
Please check the lyrics on the official Chuck Berry website, then make your comments. Have a Goode day.
I LOVE VERY MUCH THIS OLD SONG OF CHUCK BURRY.TOO HAPPY I FOUND IT IN THE WEB SITE AND WROTE IT DOWN. THANKS A LOT.
Don't mind me, I'm just going to leave my mark here.
osm song !
As I was getting my gear ready for this weekend drill, for some odd reason this song just popped into my head. So I wanted to learn the lyrics. Man I wish we had the power of the internet back in 85' when I was growing up.
one of the best starts of a song ever

by dudewhosaidfuck on 8/9/2009 5:37am

And we care about one tiny mistake because...??????
Hi guys from 6 years ago^^
Deep down _IN_ lousisiana
Dude I aint trying to sound like a snob but honestly If you listen to the song Chuck throws in an extra "GO" in the last chorus haha, so it's good.
Been playing this song for nearly 50 years &still love playing it thank you
these lyrics are great but instead of Oh my that little country boy could play, it is oh my BUT that little country boy can play x
It's rock and roll. The lyrics change a little at every rendition. An extra go here, a different preposition there. Get a life.
It's rock and roll. The lyrics change a little at every rendition. An extra go here, a different preposition there. Get a life.
And lol this site says "Thanks for your comment, we will review it and it will be added shortly". Yeah right, the obscene spews above were reviewed and approved?
Lol true dat.
I have heard a version that had an extra chorus or an extra "tonight" at the end where the lol, so objectionable "go" is. Eg"Johhny b goode tonight, tonight"
Hey Goat Tit,with a vocabulary like that I bet your one of those assholes that writes on bathroom walls.I hope you don't play guitar and give us all a bad name.
Give up,man.You're a loser.
it's rock n roll, and I very hapy listen the jonhy b.good song
"You're gonna love this, it's a classic......... Well, it's a classic where I come from."
Well I think this song is hip fun & funky .!
Tommy was a musician in my home town who ended up with his own live music venue. If a band couldn't play Johnny B. Goode at the audition they didn't get a slot.
@Marty McFly... you didnt say it was a classic... yoi said it was an oldie where you came from
BEST SONG OF THE 50s AWALS A CLASSIC FIRST HEARD OF IT IN BACK TO THE FUTURE CHUCK BERRY IS AMAZING YOU CANT BEET HIM 25 BEST ARTIST OF ALL TIME IT WILL NEVER BE OLD WELL IT BE OLD BUT IT WILL STILL BE VERY VERY POPUALER I LISINT TO IT EVERY DAY GREAT LRICIS ITS SO GREAT YOU SEE HIS OTHER ARE GREAT HE MUST BE ATLEAST 80 NOW BUT I DONT WONT TO BE AGEEST BY IM WATCH BACK TO THE FUTURE RIGHT NOW L.O.L SEE YOU GUYS LATER P.S AND KEEP ON LISTENING TO CHUCK BERRY BECAUSE HE ROCKS SO MUCH

t fluck
Terrific stuff by Chuck Berry, but Hendrix at Berkley is absolutely awesome-even me Berry would probably agree. Two same but completely different musicians.
THIS IS ON OF MY FAV SONGS
Thai os one of the most greatest songs on earth. This really means something to me.
J'adore le chanson
There is one go messing but who cares! The verses are spot on. Thanks
Love this song, I can play it as well as Chuck could back in the day...in fact, I can probably play it better than he could now, but shit, man...we all get old, and Chuck just turned 85 years old a couple of days ago...eighty-freakin'-five! If I could say anything to Chuck Berry, it'd be "You da MAN, Chuck, you da MAN, and we owe it all to you!"
The man's a legend, and his music IS rock 'n' roll...PERIOD! Now all you dim flipping cunts who feel compelled to dump all over everyone who has a different opinion should unplug your computer, put it back in the box and send it back to the store, 'cause you're MUCH too fucking stupid to own a computer!
At the very least, unplug the freakin' thing, then just shut up and LISTEN to the man play that guitar "jus' like a-ringin' a bell!"
'Nuff said.
Guys, this is a great song. The lyrics vary and it depends where you listen to it. Whether its on iTunes or Pandora or Back 2 the future, the lyrics WILL be different.
P.S.
Mac Ingram thank you for that ode to Chuck. We all needed it.
Its impossible to try not to play air guitar for this song. Its so GREAT.
Really good song words!!!!!!!
I hate swearing so pls dont
like these lyrics! its like a little story
it`s a legend.so cool music&lyric
Goat Tit your a fuckin dumbass it says Deep down Louisiana close to New Orleans it should say Deep down in Louisiana close to New Orleans so stop freaking out on ppl for tryin to help out DUMBASS
IM RIGHT FOREVER IM NOT RUDE IMEIT GUST BEING RIGHT YOU WARE BSY BEING WRONG YOU FOOTL
look
Jesus this thread is seven years old I'm still getting hate from it
Goat tit you made comment in 2008!! and u back now again in 2014 lol
I first heard this song on the radio in 1957 - I have heard it a ton of times - Mr Berry recorded this more than once and lots of people have recorded it and the lyrics change from one recording to the next - even Chuck Berry recordings. BUT the original say Down'n Louisiana... While Elvis might be King, the Founding Father of Rock and Roll is Chuck Berry!
Trop bon.
It's fantastic!!!!!!!!! I heard it for the first time in "Back to the Future" and I have instantly loved it!!!
whop whoop
In my opinion this is one of the songs that I liked, I pity people today hear trash instead of these very memorable classics
.
Johnny B. Goode
Fantastical masterpiece
Hi there, just became aware of your blog through Google, and found that it's truly informative. Im gonna watch out for brussels. I will appreciate if you continue this in future. Many people will be benefited from your writing. Cheers! bebefefcddcecbdd
Did not see any comments on last line but should be; Maybe some day your name will be in NEON ligths, saying 'Johnny B Goode tonight'
No LED lights at that time! Just bended glass tubes with the new fashion 'neon lights'! A name in neon lights would be only for a mega star so it shows the mothers high expectation of her sons future career! Many Thanks for the Lyrics! All perfect.
Would you be taken with exchanging links? kaedfeeakkkkdace
R.I.P. Chuck
I've been absent for a while, but now I remember why I used to love this website. Thanks, I'll try and check back more frequently. How frequently you update your site? abckeebdfeekcbkd
The lyrics were small.
Ya'll leave my fourth father alone!
oh yeah
Even in 2023 Harry there is no extra go at the end
