Omaha Lyrics

Artist: Counting Crows
Album: August And Everything After

Start tearing the old man down
Run past the heather and down to the old road
Start turning the grain into the ground Roll a new leaf over
In the middle of the night, there's an old man treading around in the gathered rain
Well mister, if you're going to walk on water
Could you drop a line my way?

Omaha Somewhere in middle America
Get right to the heart of matters
It's the heart that matters more
I think you better turn your ticket in
And get your money back at the door

Start threading a needle
Brush past the shuttle that slides through the cold room
Start turning the wool across the wire Roll a new life over
In the middle of the night, there's an old man threading his toes through a bucket of rain
Hey mister, you don't want to walk on water
you're only going to walk all over me

Omaha Somewhere in middle America
Get right to the heart of the matters
It's the heart that matters more
I think you better turn your ticket in
And get your money back at the door

Start running the banner down
Drop past the color come up through the summer rain
Start turning the girl into the ground Roll a new love over
In the middle of the day, there's a young man rolling around in the earth and rain
Hey Mister, if you're going to walk on water
You know you're only going to walk all over me.

Omaha Somewhere in middle America
Get right to the heart of matters
It's the heart that matters more
I think you better turn your ticket in
And get your money back at the door

I've always loved The Counting Crows since my mom first introduced me to them when I was about eight years old. I'll play their songs around some of my friends, but they all think it's either trash or odd, and it makes me feel sorry to be part of this generation.

This song is about hope of the future. Changing ones past. The old man is mentioned twice in the night( as if he is hiding) -- He then turns into a young boy in the middle of the day that has found balance in life.transformation from the old man trying to secue the rain and the young boy that finds balance in earth and rain.

Counting Crows will always be my favorite band. No matter how old i am, or what my life is like, i can always pop in this cd, and just forget about all my troubles. And please, people, dont try and disect their songs. They didnt right them so they could be explained, they were to be listened to. Just sit back and enjoy the ride, while you can

Every time I listen to August and everything after I'm flooded with a wave of nostalgia... This is all I'd hear when driving around Crete, every year of my life. One of the best songs I've ever heard.

Quite possibly one of the best bands in history- very underrated in my book!
by bwbush on 12/21/2010 8:01pm
the crows are an anomaly in the sense that they have been able to keep their same lineup and have not been afflicted by drugs and other downfalls. they are so amazing
by DaisylaniJ on 2/1/2011 8:09pm
One of my all time favorite bands. Adam' seems to talking to himself in so many songs. Such passion and intimacy in these songs. Sometimes I try to figure out the meaning but most of the time I just feel them.
by Taylor on 3/25/2011 12:29am
i love Counting Crows, i too was introduced by my Dad and because i started listening to them at such a young age every song brings me back, i cannot listen to one of their songs without finding some sort of a connection, i feel like the songs were personally made for me. Love them and always will.
by Darby on 4/24/2011 1:10pm

I absolutely love Counting Crows, I discovered them about three months ago & fell head over heels for them! My fav cd of theirs in August & Everything After, I would say that I love the song Mr. Jones & might even say it is my fav if it were not their biggest hit, I don't like to conform. I will say that I love every single song they have, but that my absulute, all time favorite, is Round Here, those lyrics are a poet's dream!
by Mr. Fish on 12/2/2011 9:42am
I am from Germany and freaking loooove that song!!! Counting Crows is the bomb guys!!!
by omaha confused on 1/21/2012 9:17pm
after all these years, i still dont understand what the lyric is about. I can only conjure up many images in my head, but nothing really concrete. I can't explain it, but who cares, this song does something good somewhere in my heart. One of my all time fav!
by Brian Short on 1/25/2012 12:27pm
The song is about drugs folks - heroin to be specific. Sorry. It just is.
by andy on 3/9/2012 1:10am
love this song...to me, there's only two lyrics that really matter in this song. "get right to the heart of matters...it's the heart that matters more." Words to live by! Also...'hey mister, if you're going to walk on water, you know you're only going to walk all over me...' Nobody is any better than anyone else!
by shane on 4/24/2012 4:48pm

First album I ever bought. Saved for the weeks allowance (15 dollars) listened to it and nothing else for an entire year
by Hey Frank on 1/16/2014 11:09am
Why do bands write songs with no meaning? stupid.
by sandstorm on 9/7/2014 9:14pm
Ok, kids....go back to your old American folklore, especially the immigrants that came from old Germany and other Northern European places. They brought their harvest gods with them a lot of the song refers to harvest and renewal via people being turned into the ground.

Anybody ever farmed before in the US of course it’s about the circle of life in general but more so what a true farmer is all about not everyone in the agriculture business was born first class like so many are today. There is a true small one percenters that still go through the whole process of the song yet every year. Why did he pick Omaha? Oh I guess it was an accident to pick an agricultureal community in the center of this great country. I feel badly for the very high percentage of people that don’t get this we give out food stamps in an application that takes 30 seconds yet I apply for an operating loan that takes many pages and everything I’m worth year in and year out and is always paid in full 100 percent of the time. Think you better turn your ticket in. It’s sunday morning I’m coming home today!
by Auburn Baseball on 6/9/2018 4:35am
Y’all have it all wrong. This song is about the College World Series that takes place in Omaha every year. All of the references to rain and water are because Adam wrote this song during a rain delay. He gets tired of waiting and asks for his money back.

Sadly, Adam would later try to go to an Orioles game and get the same result. Adam’s a very talented musician, but he should start checking weather forecasts before hitting baseball games.
