Life On Mars Lyrics

Artist: David Bowie

Life On Mars
David Bowie

It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on Amerikas tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibeza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's about the shallowness of materialist, consumerist culture in the face of the real problems in people's lives.

David,

Have you considered the notion to be the next America Idol judge? I,as many others would tune in to see you and your ideas. I have never watched it before but if you would be a judge I would never miss an episode, you are the eptitome of of performance art.
My daughter, age nine, can recite all the songs from your stellar collection of Greatest hits. All her friends from 3yrs to 13yrs come to our home and request your music far beyond Lady Gaga,Jonas', Miley,Usher,Beyonce et al.
Come on Mr.David Bowie, we all want to see you, we love you, you

Lennon/Lenin, both. It's a double meaning.

I think the first half is fairly straightforward. The girl with the mousey hair has a date, her mother doesn't approve but her father does. But when she gets to the movie, her friend (boyfriend I assume) has stood her up, she watches the film alone. But the film is pretty much like everything else that Hollywood churns out. (The sailors, cavemen, lawman of the chorus are the things in the movie, it's a freaky, bestselling show)

Second half is a little tougher. The entertainment industry has gone to heck (Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow.) People are seeking fame instead of following the ideas of Lenin/Lennon. Hordes of tourists all go to the typical tourist destinations (Ibiza & Norfolk Broads). The movies are all the same plots recycled over and over again.

So the singer (and probably the mousey haired girl) wonder if this is it, or if there is another world somewhere. Is there life on Mars?

I think the girl got pregnant. Dad wanted her out. Her dreams of a lovely future out the window.
Chorus & 2nd verse, refers to the world in the 70's unions, working class,America & it's wacky notions, policing & how those times affected us all.Life on Mars....is there something better out there?

Just saw this sung on "American Horror Story, Freak Show" 1st episode and couldn't remember where I had heard it before...
by earlysecond on 10/13/2014 1:12pm
B.Young,
I did the exact same thing, from the time the song was performed during the HS first episode until it was over, I was attempting to determine whose song it was so much it distracted my attention.
by Liliana on 10/24/2014 2:08pm
