I see only one interpretation of this song. They sound like they're an "on & Off again" couple who were at odds as to who would be the dominant of the two so they broke up, hence the song title. They then seem to get back together for a date (taking a ride with my best friend) and the driver is asserting himself again as the dominant of the two ("Promises me I'm as safe as houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers"). The other is seemingly accepting his new role as the "submissive" one ("See the stars they're shining bright
Everything's alright tonight"). Now it appears they can be a happy couple now that all the bugs are worked out.
