I heard the meaning behind the song was about Drug addiction. Either the eagles experience or singing about a relative? Not sure though

it was written about a well known singer/song writer who was also very good friend of theirs... he was having a real bad time & was running himself into the ground so... this song came about because they cared about him & the way he was going.
Luckily this guy found his way back & is out there writing & singing songs again... he got his life back.

For me, this song has a very deep, spiritual meaning - whether or not that was the intention, who knows, except the Eagles. But, it will always be my all time favorite!
