Dont Bring Me Down Lyrics

Artist: Electric Light Orchestra

You got me runnin' goin' out of my mind,
You got me thinkin' that I'm wastin' my time.
Don't bring me down,no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

You wanna stay out with your fancy friends.
I'm tellin' you it's go to be the end,
Don't bring me down,no no no no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down.

What happend to the girl I used to known,
You let your mind out somewhere down the road,
Don't bring me down,no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

You're always talkin' 'bout your crazy nights,
One of these days you're gonna get it right.
Don't bring me down,no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down.

You're lookin' good just like a snake in the grass,
One of these days you're gonna break your glass.
Don't bring me down,no no no no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

You got me shakin' got me runnin' away
You get me crawlin' up to you everyday,
Don't bring me down,no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

I LOVE THIS SONG!
by Beechnut on 5/26/2008 1:47pm
I always thought it was "Proust", a reference to a fine French author, ratrher than "grooss" which is .... what?
by Rebecca on 5/31/2008 9:09am
I agree with the comment that it is 'Proust' instead of 'grooss'. ELO frequently use french in their songs which would explain the use of the french author, where as 'grooss' is not much of a word. Oh yeah..great song too.
by Robi on 6/4/2008 5:30am
Well, i thought it was 'Bruce'!!!!
by gerb on 6/8/2008 6:37pm
I thought it was bruce too!! hahaha
by Ashli on 6/10/2008 10:15pm
It is in fact "Groos" which is a word that the band made up, but after it was widely mistaken as "Bruce!" ELO actually began to sing "bruce" at their live performances.
by Rich on 6/11/2008 8:18am
I've got the original LP with the lyrics in and it's "Grooss"

This is thought to come from a German greeting (Gruss got??) - the album was rcorded in Munich.

Later, the band apparrently changed the lyrics and started singing "Bruce" in concert!
by german on 6/15/2008 6:45pm
it's "Grüß Gott!"
by a person on 6/20/2008 8:03pm

by simian on 8/3/2008 1:44pm
it's gruss lol, which is german for greetings as in gruss gott- the album was recorded in munich

by Seriously on 9/23/2008 9:47pm

by lol on 12/7/2008 9:31am
its a good song, it doesn't even matter what the lyrics are, just sing it at the top of your lungs (even if you make a fool of yourself like i did yellin BRUCEEE!) and if it really bothers you that much then just go away, cause the rest of us are just enjoying the song
by little one on 12/9/2008 3:51pm
i agree with lol, just enjoy the freakin' song steve! it is a great song.
by Insert name here on 12/28/2008 2:20am
Wow. People get overly hyped out whether it's "Proust", "Grooos", or "Bruce".
I didn't know everyone had to sing something the same way other people did.

by Kyle on 3/19/2009 7:51pm
Wow i thought that it was bruce too which made me question the lead singer sexuality. but now im faced with a new question, what the hell is grooss?
by Lori Gale on 3/21/2009 1:52pm
It's actually Truce, as in let's call it even. I know Jeff BerLynn

by Curious on 8/10/2009 3:37pm
So, if I use this song for a theme of a character named Bruce, i'd be madly retarded? sigh.

by livinlifenow on 12/28/2009 7:26am
it would have been so much easier if they had just sung "Ruth"
by spencer on 1/14/2010 12:48pm
this is wrong. its not " gross". its Bruce. Granted I dont know why its bruce, but it is.
by rick on 1/17/2010 7:46pm
you mean he not singing about a tree. I thought it was Spruce.
by hah on 1/19/2010 1:11am
I'm stickin with bruce cause its the most fun to sing :D
by old gruntee on 1/23/2010 7:58am
That song causes me great consternation as Bruce, as it seems to me to be, is the name of my aged father. Someone invited me to an ELO rehearsal in Wimbledon, London 1975, and I declined. So it gets me awfully concerned as playing 1970s ELO today in Australia today is really poignant.
by Old Gruntee on 1/23/2010 8:00am
Australia being 'Down Under".
by Reneeee on 1/24/2010 10:08pm
I believe this was Kurt Cobain's favorite song when he was 12.

:)

by mike on 2/26/2010 5:32pm
so why are they singing Bruce, grooss, spruce, or any derivitive.
by Howman on 3/1/2010 10:59pm
I think it's funny if you sing Bruce and roll the r. Go on, try it! It's fun! Don't bring me down, Brrrruce!
by Ian Vidious on 3/5/2010 8:12am
I heard the rrrroling of Rs was a genetic trait only possible for some people's tongues, not all tongues.Must be more than an aesthetic fill-in word tho don't you think?
by Bruce on 3/9/2010 8:28am

by liizie on 3/22/2010 10:41pm

Proto ti radím, abys určitě neváhal a přišel se trochu pobavit a zažít dobrodružství.

by Sy Simms on 10/5/2010 9:07am
All these years I thought it was "Roose," kind of a lisp sound for "Ruth." I am now educated. And, an educated consumer is ELO's best cutomer.
by Dana on 10/28/2010 7:14pm
Wow.....all this info.....I am not sure it matters....but enjoy the song....it is a great one!
by Jocylen on 11/1/2010 6:37pm
I always thought Bruce also. These comments made me curious. Wikipedia refers to the book below and says:A common mondegreen in the song is the perception that, following the title line, Jeff Lynne shouts "Bruce!" However, according to liner notes, he is actually saying a made-up word "Grroosss". This is similar to a German word for "greeting", Gruß, possibly referring to the Austrian and Bavarian greeting Grüß Gott that the group would have heard while recording the album in Munich. However, after the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Jeff Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows it's in this book:“Wild, David. "The Story of a Rock and Roll Band and the Pop Genius Who Dared to Go Baroque." So, you are all kind of right ;)

I just searched the lyrics for this song because I thought there was no way it could be "Bruce" and needed a final answer... happily I came across these hilarious comments and don't care that I didn't get my final answer. I wonder how many years we will be commenting??? I guess my vote is for BRUCE!... this is a democracy right?

I'm another Patti married to another Bruce! (hi to the previous one!)

My son just got Essential ELO for his dad for father's day, and my husband said "Why did they have to use the name Bruce?" so of course, I danced around the house singing this, one of my fave dance songs ever! Bruce!

So that's our vote!
by Daybreaker on 6/23/2011 10:23am
Yes, "grroosss" is the actual word (taken straight off the lyric sheet). Jeff Lynne says it's just a word he made up, although Mack (the German engineer who worked on this album) noted that it sounded kind of like the German word for "good morning."

Most folks who aren't avid ELO fans think it sounds like they're singing "Bruce". For that reason, when the song was performed live, Jeff would often sing "Bruce" instead.

by C Biscuit on 8/21/2011 6:22pm
I think, perchance they made that part of the song slightly slurred to leave it open to the interpretation of the next man. It is a beast that shifts from person to person, never having a precise form.

A common mondegreen in the song is the perception that, following the title line, Jeff Lynne shouts "Bruce!" However, according to liner notes, he is actually saying a made-up word "Grroosss". This is similar to a German word for "greeting", Gruß, possibly referring to the Austrian and Bavarian greeting Grüß Gott - pronounced gryss - that the group would have heard while recording the album in Munich. However, after the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Jeff Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.

by Sandy on 6/1/2012 2:41am
This song came on at work today and I sang very happily and loudly Don't bring me down Brrrrrrruce. Of course my workmates laughed hysterically, but I just continued on because I KNEW it was Bruce, and then off and on all day it became the lol. Hence my intrigue with my talent of generally interpreting a lot of lyrics wrongly, and sneaking a peak about this latest one. It continues to make me laugh and be happy. Rock on ELO!!! I DONT CARE.
by Ahkbar on 12/9/2012 4:41pm
According to the liner notes of the ELO compilation Flashback, he is saying the German word "Gruß," as in the expression "Grüß Gott." The lyrics are written on the back of the album as "groosss". After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.

by Cyd on 7/13/2013 9:53pm
Thanks for all the laughs, people. I am old enough to have heard this song when it first came out and I even thought it was 'Bruce'. Never questioned it because the rest of the lyrics didn't always make sense either. But DOUCHE?!? I am still laughing!!! Great singin' in the car LOUD song.
by Hooray for Bruce on 8/25/2015 6:20am
Ignoring the multiple "Wikipedia says ..." or "ELO says ..." and counting only the "I always thought ...", "I always heard ...", "To me it always will be ...", 'Bruce' so far carries the day with 42 votes, followed by 'Ruth' with 5 votes, ‘douche' with 3, 'Proust' and 'truce' with 2 each, and finally 'giirrllss', 'Louis', 'priss', 'whoop', 'wooohhoo', 'cooch', 'rouse', 'spruce', 'goose' with 1 each.

And 'Bruce' is what we sang as school kids when the song was at number 1 (or wherever it peaked). Sorry, Jeff Lynne! Intellectualism isn't all it's cracked up to be.
by Boghog on 4/21/2017 3:27pm
Its spruce u morons as in dont bring me down but spruce me up, is it so hard people to understand the underlying context of a song!
by Matthew on 6/2/2017 1:58pm
so you all think you finally know what follows "don't break me down"?

No, no, no, no, no :D
by Barry on 2/4/2018 9:43pm
I agree with Boghog, I'm sure "Spruce" was what was written in the lyrics inside the album cover because I originally thought it was "Bruce" until I got the album. By the way, any of you know what an "album" is?
by Why? on 3/7/2020 11:57pm
These comments crack me up! I have read everyone of them, and throughout the whole decade, it seems no one knows yet! I believe you can sing whatever you want, ELO probably changed their lyrics multiple times, who cares what it is?
Bottom line: Make it your own version, say whatever!

I think we should stop fighting each other in the comment section and just talk about how cool it is and why its cool. Or hey, instead of shitting on Steve, listen to this dank ass song again!
