Dont Bring Me Down Lyrics
Artist: Electric Light Orchestra
You got me runnin' goin' out of my mind,
You got me thinkin' that I'm wastin' my time.
Don't bring me down,no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.
You wanna stay out with your fancy friends.
I'm tellin' you it's go to be the end,
Don't bring me down,no no no no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down.
What happend to the girl I used to known,
You let your mind out somewhere down the road,
Don't bring me down,no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.
You're always talkin' 'bout your crazy nights,
One of these days you're gonna get it right.
Don't bring me down,no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down,grroosss
Don't bring me down.
You're lookin' good just like a snake in the grass,
One of these days you're gonna break your glass.
Don't bring me down,no no no no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.
You got me shakin' got me runnin' away
You get me crawlin' up to you everyday,
Don't bring me down,no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

Comments/Interpretations
I LOVE THIS SONG!
I always thought it was "Proust", a reference to a fine French author, ratrher than "grooss" which is .... what?
I agree with the comment that it is 'Proust' instead of 'grooss'. ELO frequently use french in their songs which would explain the use of the french author, where as 'grooss' is not much of a word. Oh yeah..great song too.
Well, i thought it was 'Bruce'!!!!
I thought it was bruce too!! hahaha
It is in fact "Groos" which is a word that the band made up, but after it was widely mistaken as "Bruce!" ELO actually began to sing "bruce" at their live performances.
I've got the original LP with the lyrics in and it's "Grooss"
This is thought to come from a German greeting (Gruss got??) - the album was rcorded in Munich.
Later, the band apparrently changed the lyrics and started singing "Bruce" in concert!
it's "Grüß Gott!"
i first heard this song right before it ended and i still liked it! great song
Oh my! I thought that it was Bruce too, silly me!!!
OOOMMMMGGGGG I THOUGT IT WAS BRUCE TOOO!!!! HOW FRICKING CRAZY!!!!!!! BBBRRRRUUUCCCCCEEEE.
i thought he said bruce as well... i imagined this song as a great opener for a comedy where an unkempt man finds himself being hit on by men in leather at a gay bar.
it's gruss lol, which is german for greetings as in gruss gott- the album was recorded in munich
I have always known it was Grroosss
and get annoyed with people thinking its Bruce!
Steve needs help if he is that easily annoyed. Brrrruce is way funnier than some German greeting. I'm sticking with Bruce! Munich Shmoonich!
whats up ur butt stevo
take a chill man
I thought it was bruce too! WTF is a grroosss?
its Bruce!
had album and lyrics.
does it really matter? lay off steve, people are allowed to have pet peeves.
its a good song, it doesn't even matter what the lyrics are, just sing it at the top of your lungs (even if you make a fool of yourself like i did yellin BRUCEEE!) and if it really bothers you that much then just go away, cause the rest of us are just enjoying the song
i agree with lol, just enjoy the freakin' song steve! it is a great song.
Wow. People get overly hyped out whether it's "Proust", "Grooos", or "Bruce".
I didn't know everyone had to sing something the same way other people did.
i always thought it was just a high pitched voice like"ahhhhhhhh"
steve, bruce,
dont bring me down
i thought it was bruce too
Thought it was grrooss...brruuuce,,,ahhh... BruGroossce
my friend likes this song...he is 12...me and him sing it a lot
my friend loves this song...he is 12 his name is grant and he thought that groos whas bruce too we sing it a lot
It definitely sounds like Bruce but it is sung to a girl so that's why I was curious ty for clearing it up.
Wow i thought that it was bruce too which made me question the lead singer sexuality. but now im faced with a new question, what the hell is grooss?
It's actually Truce, as in let's call it even. I know Jeff BerLynn
I thought it was Bruce also.
its bruce
I think you can all be corect and ELO might have changed the lyrics multiple times.
ur exactly ryt Rice
So, if I use this song for a theme of a character named Bruce, i'd be madly retarded? sigh.
i think truce makes sence but i too thought it was bruce! lol
Wow, I thought it was Ruth!
you all bring me down talking about it
and I thought it was just me who wasn't sure what they were saying
But now that I listen to it again, it definitly sounds like grooss
Excellent name Rusty dale is my favorite
Es uno de mis grupos preferidos desde hace muchos ańos, su musica es superior a la época en que la hicieron por todos esos sonidos tan especiales que incluyen en todas sus canciones.
I have a friend named Bruce and would sing it to him that way. Guess I cant anymore...
that song rockes my mom sied it suckes
I always thought it was "giirrllss" my kids always argue it's "truce" and "bruce"....so what is it? LOL
it would have been so much easier if they had just sung "Ruth"
this is wrong. its not " gross". its Bruce. Granted I dont know why its bruce, but it is.
you mean he not singing about a tree. I thought it was Spruce.
I'm stickin with bruce cause its the most fun to sing :D
That song causes me great consternation as Bruce, as it seems to me to be, is the name of my aged father. Someone invited me to an ELO rehearsal in Wimbledon, London 1975, and I declined. So it gets me awfully concerned as playing 1970s ELO today in Australia today is really poignant.
Australia being 'Down Under".
I believe this was Kurt Cobain's favorite song when he was 12.
:)
What did Kurt Cobain think of the ELO song The Diary of Horace Wimp?
My wife and I are rolling from this thread. Two years and it's still going. Thank for sending us to bed laughing.
How is it that no one can cite a reference and say for sure what the lyric is? Don't bring me down! Oh yeah, what the H does this mean? you're gonna break your glass
so why are they singing Bruce, grooss, spruce, or any derivitive.
I think it's funny if you sing Bruce and roll the r. Go on, try it! It's fun! Don't bring me down, Brrrruce!
I heard the rrrroling of Rs was a genetic trait only possible for some people's tongues, not all tongues.Must be more than an aesthetic fill-in word tho don't you think?
I thought it was douche...
wtf i though it was bruce also and how do u mistake it for douche?
it is bruce. there was an interview where the singer stated that he added it cause he thought it sounded cool, it was written, it was an ad-lib.
I listen to the song all the time and never even noticed that Brrrrruce part of the song until now.
I just thought it was "Don't bring me downnn, whoop."
who really gives a shit what their saying? Jam the song when it comes on and say whatever you want.
grooss is a german greeting
You peeps bust me up. Who gives a rats a$$! Although, its been 2 yrs shouldn't someone have proof by now? But that would end the fun, huh?
I saw an interview on MTV with ELO. They said originally, they used a word the band made up "grooss". They later changed the lyric to Bruce and sang it to band member Bruce.
totally! we thought it was brrruuuuce too! that's crazy, does everybody look at this for the same reason? bruce, gross neither makes much fricken sense strange!!!!!!
I thought it was Ruth. Don't bring me down, Ruth. Gross, grips, bruce, all sounds stupid
I always thought it said "Cooch". Oh well
get a life
Proto ti radím, abys určitě neváhal a přiel se trochu pobavit a zaít dobrodruství.
Um. It IS Bruce.......
It is fucking bruce u people shut the hell up its bruce. lol. the end! its bruce!!! shutup!!! BRUCE IS IT!!!!! BRUCE!!!!
To zní jako docela stranou. Určitě mají smysl pro dobrodruství a rád bych se s ní setkal a její přítel, je-li jiná dívka. Nemyslím si, e zvířata mě zajímají, ale kdo ví? Zahrňte mě vae plány. Poor Bruce, he has a complex now.
Jack and ZMRD - where the hell did you get a keyboard that does all that stuff?!
BTW - I'm sure it's Bruce...
ya seriously where do u get a keyboard dat does all dat weird crap n i always thought it was o wooohhoo!!well dats how i sing it at least i mean all your predictions r stupid n im 13 n gimpy n gimpys dat r 13 r like always correct lolz.
My boyfriend and I argued all night about this stupid word. Since I was a kid I could swear it was "priss", and he says Bruce.
Either way, I'll sing it my way and he'll sing his. I'd love to hear this at karaoke to hear other interpretations!!!
I have the whole album and this is my fave song
grooss
fuck you steve piece of shit faggot
my husband is a Bruce, his and his friends have sang it with "Bruce" since the 80's
All these years I thought it was "Roose," kind of a lisp sound for "Ruth." I am now educated. And, an educated consumer is ELO's best cutomer.
Wow.....all this info.....I am not sure it matters....but enjoy the song....it is a great one!
I always thought Bruce also. These comments made me curious. Wikipedia refers to the book below and says:A common mondegreen in the song is the perception that, following the title line, Jeff Lynne shouts "Bruce!" However, according to liner notes, he is actually saying a made-up word "Grroosss". This is similar to a German word for "greeting", Gruß, possibly referring to the Austrian and Bavarian greeting Grüß Gott that the group would have heard while recording the album in Munich. However, after the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Jeff Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows it's in this book:Wild, David. "The Story of a Rock and Roll Band and the Pop Genius Who Dared to Go Baroque." So, you are all kind of right ;)
grroooss
u faggots
Hilarious.
I read every single comment! So funny! Let's all give love to one another. Merry Christmas! I'll be singing 'Don't bring me down, Bruce!'
Wow..that's pretty good. I always sing it as "douche" but I knew that wasn't it. I just didn't know what it was!!!
Bruce, spruce, ruth, it was always hard to tell. Who cares, sing it the way you want to. If you're going too that is. I know I'm not going too...... Bruce.
I just searched the lyrics for this song because I thought there was no way it could be "Bruce" and needed a final answer... happily I came across these hilarious comments and don't care that I didn't get my final answer. I wonder how many years we will be commenting??? I guess my vote is for BRUCE!... this is a democracy right?
you fucked up the ltrics
bruce gets my vote
hilarious how one word in a song can get everyone going...the reason I came to this sight was to find out the word too hehehe
Thanks for all the laughs, I needed it. I feel much better now.
Bruce gets my vote as well.
Although it could be 'Spruce Goose' tada
The first time i heard this song was when they first performed it on Saturday Night Live in 1979. It was one of the first albums I ever bought.
Its bruce u morons
Its chaos and always will be:)
I'm another Patti married to another Bruce! (hi to the previous one!)
My son just got Essential ELO for his dad for father's day, and my husband said "Why did they have to use the name Bruce?" so of course, I danced around the house singing this, one of my fave dance songs ever! Bruce!
So that's our vote!
Yes, "grroosss" is the actual word (taken straight off the lyric sheet). Jeff Lynne says it's just a word he made up, although Mack (the German engineer who worked on this album) noted that it sounded kind of like the German word for "good morning."
Most folks who aren't avid ELO fans think it sounds like they're singing "Bruce". For that reason, when the song was performed live, Jeff would often sing "Bruce" instead.
It's Struce dont get hyped it's a gay song
Tiffany is awesome
It's "juice", isn't it?
I think, perchance they made that part of the song slightly slurred to leave it open to the interpretation of the next man. It is a beast that shifts from person to person, never having a precise form.
Its Bruce, I know its bruce because Im doing it for school and it SAYS BRUCE, DER GET IT RIGHT MORONS
We too sing Brrrruce, who cares if its grrrross, Brrrruce is so much more fun. I'm actually jamming it now while writing this thread. Don't bring me down, Brrruce.
I thought it was douche.
NHL 12 & Super 8
Whats a Bruce ?
He was talking about some fat chick n just slurred the word gross......think about it
And here it was thinking it Louis!
I still say it's BRUCE, too!!!!!!! LOL! I'm stickin' with BRUCE because I have a KICKASS, FUN friend named Bruce who lives in Chicago, so it reminds me of him!!! :o)
A common mondegreen in the song is the perception that, following the title line, Jeff Lynne shouts "Bruce!" However, according to liner notes, he is actually saying a made-up word "Grroosss". This is similar to a German word for "greeting", Gruß, possibly referring to the Austrian and Bavarian greeting Grüß Gott - pronounced gryss - that the group would have heard while recording the album in Munich. However, after the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Jeff Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.
thats strange i always thought they were saying constantinople.
I thought it was 'Ruth' haha.
This song came on at work today and I sang very happily and loudly Don't bring me down Brrrrrrruce. Of course my workmates laughed hysterically, but I just continued on because I KNEW it was Bruce, and then off and on all day it became the lol. Hence my intrigue with my talent of generally interpreting a lot of lyrics wrongly, and sneaking a peak about this latest one. It continues to make me laugh and be happy. Rock on ELO!!! I DONT CARE.
According to the liner notes of the ELO compilation Flashback, he is saying the German word "GruĂ," as in the expression "Grßà Gott." The lyrics are written on the back of the album as "groosss". After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.
its dont bring me down ruse or rouse always was. means dont bring me down deceiver =To cause to believe what is not true; mislead. 2. Archaic To catch by guile; ensnare. v.intr. 1. To practice deceit. 2.
Its Grroosss! end of! it's not a feckin Vote! thats how Jeff Wrote it! so live with it! bastardising MF'S
I thought it was goose
Goose Bruce loose truth Ruth!! To each his own! But I actually came on this site an accident cause I was trying to figure out what he says. Now I know that nobody knows for sure lol
Thanks for all the laughs, people. I am old enough to have heard this song when it first came out and I even thought it was 'Bruce'. Never questioned it because the rest of the lyrics didn't always make sense either. But DOUCHE?!? I am still laughing!!! Great singin' in the car LOUD song.
Ignoring the multiple "Wikipedia says ..." or "ELO says ..." and counting only the "I always thought ...", "I always heard ...", "To me it always will be ...", 'Bruce' so far carries the day with 42 votes, followed by 'Ruth' with 5 votes, âdouche' with 3, 'Proust' and 'truce' with 2 each, and finally 'giirrllss', 'Louis', 'priss', 'whoop', 'wooohhoo', 'cooch', 'rouse', 'spruce', 'goose' with 1 each.
And 'Bruce' is what we sang as school kids when the song was at number 1 (or wherever it peaked). Sorry, Jeff Lynne! Intellectualism isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Its spruce u morons as in dont bring me down but spruce me up, is it so hard people to understand the underlying context of a song!
so you all think you finally know what follows "don't break me down"?
No, no, no, no, no :D
I agree with Boghog, I'm sure "Spruce" was what was written in the lyrics inside the album cover because I originally thought it was "Bruce" until I got the album. By the way, any of you know what an "album" is?
These comments crack me up! I have read everyone of them, and throughout the whole decade, it seems no one knows yet! I believe you can sing whatever you want, ELO probably changed their lyrics multiple times, who cares what it is?
Bottom line: Make it your own version, say whatever!
poopy
Roose! It's Roose, with a beautifully rolled R, don't know what song all you other weirdos are listening to. Don't bring me do-own, rrrrrrroose!
I thought it was Ritz... not groos or bruce... I heard a completely difference vowel sound đ
Honestly, bruce, gross, ritz, rose, puss, osse, moose, shoes? WHO CARES THIS SONG IS A LEGENDARY PIECE OF DOPE MUSIC.
I think we should stop fighting each other in the comment section and just talk about how cool it is and why its cool. Or hey, instead of shitting on Steve, listen to this dank ass song again!
I thought he was watching a bullwinkle show at the time, and was saying "don't bring me down, moose".
Zin is the winner!
