Let's Call The Whole Thing Off Lyrics
Artist: Fred Astaire
(verse)
Things have come to a pretty pass,
Our romance is growing flat,
For you like this and the other
While I go for this and that.
Goodness knows what the end will be;
Oh, I don't know where I'm at...
It looks as if we two will never be one,
Something must be done.
(refrain)
You say eether and I say eyether,
You say neether and I say nyther;
Eether, eyether, neether, nyther,
Let's call the whole thing off!
You like potato and I like potahto,
You like tomato and I like tomahto;
Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto!
Let's call the whole thing off!
But oh! If we call the whole thing off,
Then we must part.
And oh! If we ever part,
Then that might break my heart!
So, if you like pajamas and I like pajahmas,
I'll wear pajamas and give up pajahmas.
For we know we need each other,
So we better call the calling off off.
Let's call the whole thing off!
You say laughter and I say lawfter,
You say after and I say awfter;
Laughter, lawfter, after, awfter,
Let's call the whole thing off!
You like vanilla and I like vanella,
You, sa's'parilla and I sa's'parella;
Vanilla, vanella, Choc'late, strawb'ry!
Let's call the whole thing off!
But oh! If we call the whole thing off,
Then we must part.
And oh! If we ever part,
Then that might break my heart!
So, if you go for oysters and I go for ersters
I'll order oysters and cancel the ersters.
For we know we need each other,
So we better call the calling off off!
Let's call the whole thing off!

Comments/Interpretations
The music by George Gershwin, the lyrics by Ira Gershwin, Fred Astair sang and danced
"you like Havanna, and i like Havona
you like banana, and i like banohna,ect.ect."
in place of the vanilla stuff
is how Ginger Rodgers sings it in the movie
people go on sites like this to learn the ltrics to a song not to see some stupid idiot write rubbish, if your gonna copy lyrics make sure you get it right the first time....GENIUS!!
Jessica; Chill honey. Life's too short to get annoyed by the little things.
Jessica is a syphilitic whore with mouth sores.
I had to be very persistent to find this site and mention of the Gershwin brothers.
When I/we Google "who wrote the lyrics to: lest call the whole thing off" the results credit Fred astair for the firs version, then Louis Armstrong and then Ella Fitzgerald and others for subsequent versions.

Long ago, there was a drink that some folks called sarsaparilla. (Pronounced, "sass-pah-rill-la"). It was basically what we call "root beer" today. i guess there were two different ways to pronounce it, (also "sass-pah-rell-la"), and so it is used in the song. i have NO idea why they saw fit to put those *'s* in there.

this is a nice song its catchy to lol
binky's right. this aint the version on the movie shall we dance. This is Ella Fitzgerald and Lois Armstrong's version of the song.
What year for these lyrics?
Love to hear other variations on this theme. It's an interesting assortment of accents in the international world.
If you know your American Musical history, you know that there are often varying versions of the same song, particularly in the Gershwin era. Many of these songs were written and then rewritten (or edited) for screen. Sometimes the songs of the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and others were used in varying versions in theater and multiple movies over the course of a decade or more. This version is published, as well as the lines Ginger Rogers sang in "Shall We Dance"
what does the lyric mean?
I just love the song, it signifys 2 people with defferent undastandings towards the same things coming together and agreeing on them the same way... thats what love does.
Anna....Sasparilla was a soft drink similar to root beer or coca cola.
I also love the lyrics. Two people do not need to agree to be together.
Lawyer, If you read the title correctly it list Fred Astaire as the artist. It does not list him as the one who wrote the music or the lyrics of the song. He was just the "artist" that sung the song in a movie.
Binky is totally right about Havanna / banana. That's how it is and how it runs actually.
I had to roller skate to that song in school haha
