Town Without Pity Lyrics
Artist: Gene Pitney
When you're young and so in love as we
And bewildered by the world we see
Why do people hurt us so
Only those in love would know
What a town without pity can do
If we stop to gaze upon a star
People talk about how bad we are
Ours is not an easy age
We're like tigers in a cage
What a town without pity can do
The young have problems, many problems
We need an understanding heart
Why don't they help us, try and help us
Before this clay and granite planet falls apart
Take these eager lips and hold me fast
I'm afraid this kind of joy can't last
How can we keep love alive
How can anything survive
When these little minds tear you in two
What a town without pity can do
How can we keep love alive
How can anything survive
When these little minds tear you in two
What a town without pity can do
No, it isn't very pretty what a town without pity

Comments/Interpretations
If you love this song, listen to Arlen Roth's cover version of it! The female vocalist with the whistle register voice who did the Star Trek theme song does the high harmony. It's an amazing cover of a classic song!
I tried to find the version you recommended, with no luck. Can you provide any link or anything? I'm dying to hear it now lol!
The last line actually finishes with a big: Can Doooooooo.
I sing this song to my 14 month old and he thinks the end is hysterical!
Check out Eddie Reader's version.
Amazing and the best out there.
yeaaaaaah
pero al final falta el
CAAAN DOOOO
jajaj, miren Look Who Is Talkin, cuando John Travolta baila con Kirsty Allen
The movie of the same name was
very sad, with Kristin Kaufman.
It took place near an Army base and whe was attacked by a bunch of soldiers. The town sided with
the guys.
Kirk Douglass puked at the end of the movie.
amossn
I saw this movie as a kid. I think the theme is great and I still play it on my Ipod. Kirk was so handsome!!! se
I'm 60.I was making fish stock and turkey stock for chowder and soup and this song got in my head. The opening scene got burned in my brain. what a great song.
My mam loved Gene Pitney when I was growing up and this song featured in 'cold case' the other night now I can't stop singing it. Its such a sexy, seductive track.
I love this song my mom grew up to it and past it on to me and i agree with Leah it is a sexy and seductive song <3
IMO, the sexy electric version done by Ronnie Montrose is the best. It is a powerful instrumental cut.
Brian Setzer Orchestra does an absolutely cranking version of this. He once remarked that his band was the loudest anything he'd ever heard. Serious passion in the music.
Yep, that last line of "Caaan Doooo" is the best. Why isn't it included in the lyrics here?
A great song, by a GREAT singer.
One of his earliest, and one of his BEST.!
Until I saw this, I thought he was saying ..."grey and granite"... even now I think it would make a better lyric. There is the alliteration, and the imagery of great referring to old while the chorus starts with the word, "young". I saw Fee Waybill do this with The Outragoeus Tubes as their encore in the 70's. It was outrageous. I dig the tune.
You should have heard the lead singer for The Tubes perform this song last night at the Aladdin Theater in Portland, OR. It was fantastic!! He also performed "This Town", a Frank Sinatra song; and he came out on stage with the floor length raincoat and wide brim hat pulled down so you could barely see his eyes....super cool!
I do not know why this Pitney's recording brings these images to my mind : a great disco night... a semi-dark and crowded site... a sexy and exciting music... pretty girls dancing on the tables... smoke of cigarettes going up like snakes through the air... red, purple and violet stroboscopic lights... laughs... an atmosphere of sweaty people... the sound of wine glasses... whispering voices on my ears... warm bodies moving around... ha ha
cannot find eddie reader's version or arlen roth's version of town without pity. Anywhere...any help appreciated. thanks.
if you would like to hear an awesome instrumental version of this song just type in Town without pity Ronnie Montrose 1991
The nylons version is my favorite, Mark Connors could sing the whole song with an emotional voice. Very nice to listen too.
This is one of the greatest songs. Great tune, great wording and a very great voice of Gene Pitney.
Wonderful unique voice that is Gene Pitney.Plaintive and vulnerable.Fabulous vocalist.
