Praying For Time Lyrics

Praying For Time
George Michael
These are the days of the open hand
They might just be the last
Look around now
These are the days of the beggars and the choosers
This is the year of the hungry man
Whose place is in the past
Hand in hand with ignorance
And legitimate excuses
The rich declare themselves poor
And most of us are not sure
If we have too much
But we'll take our chances
'Cause God's stopped keeping score
I guess somewhere along the way
He must have let us all out to play
Turned his back and all God's children
Crept out the back door
And it's hard to love, there's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope
When there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it's much too much too late
Well maybe we should all be praying for time
These are the days of the empty hand
Oh, you hold on to what you can
And charity is a coat you wear twice a year
This is the year of the guilty man
Your television takes a stand
And you find that what was over there is over here
So you scream from behind your door
Say what's mine is mine and not yours
I may have too much but I'll take my chances
'Cause God's stopped keeping score
And you cling to the things they sold you
Did you cover your eyes when they told you
That he can't come back
'Cause he has no children to come back for
It's hard to love there's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope when there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it's much too late
So maybe we should all be praying for time

Comments/Interpretations
that song is beautiful!!!!!
Very prophetic piece of music.
Heard this song for the first time tonight on American Idol, it put a lump in my throat. GM sang it so beautifully. In my mind and heart this song goes very deep, and reflects todays unfortunate way of life that has been handed to us average hard working people. OF THOSE WHO HAVE AND THOSE WHO HAVE NOT. The gap has been widened by our ecomonic and political arenas, in turn the average Joe Schmoo meaning the poor and the used to be middle class is feeling and reacting according to all the CONTROLLED BS WE ARE BEING FORCED TO EAT.
what does this song mean, or what was on george's mind when he wrote this, if he wrote it.
I AGREE WHAT IS THIS SONG ABOUT?? iS IT ABOUT THE WAR ? aND ARE MEN OVER SEAS?
this song is what this world needs to hear. it's talking about how selfish people have become,so we need to start changing our ways, or this world is going tofall apart. look around it already is starting to fall apart,so we need topry for time.
just awesome! _0_
YES I agree with Sara... That's exactly what the song means. Look at whats happening in the world.
To me: It's about all that we have done wrong and how it's time to stop and start making diferent choices. "The wounded skies above" speaks to pollution and "I may have too much but I'll take my chances" is describing greed.
It also seems to speak to world leaders, celebrities and how they aren't being the positive examples they could be.
Awesome song and so cool that he chose it for American Idol.
This song is so appropriate to the problems South Africa faces right now ...
The song is about Armageddon and the end of humanity.
This song is just beautiful. I love it.
this song don't make sense to me at all!?!?!?
This song is about the end of long sought relationship by a married Fox Movie Producer who was found to be having an extra-marital affair with a woman that he fathered an illegitimate child with, who was supposed to have been sent out of the country in hiding, but is still in the states. This song is an esoteric way to convey to all those in the know that the truth has been found out and now the only hope left for him has turned to hate.
GOD DID NOT TURN HIS BACK ON US!
Wow , you guys need to get a life,,,,,,,,just kiddin
The song is very appropirate for our times. As individuals we should lok at our lives and ask am i happy? Truly happy? Am i giving back or 'almost giving back'? What is going on with our leaders? Do they give a shit about me? Really do they? What is really going on? Were the things i have been told and sold worth it? Or should i live a simpler life so others may simply live? because if i don't then will it come back to me?
these are the days of the empty hand, a metaphor for nothing in our hearts any more. the lyrics reflect in some ways the desperation of the world and individuals to have some meaning
I love this song because it can be interpreted in so many different ways. I think for each verse, he describes a different problem that the world is facing, such as global warming, and poverty, and greed. He also makes the point that some people are getting to the point where they simply accept the fact that they don't care anymore if they are being selfish ("but we'll take our chances, cause God's stopped keeping score"). The song brings all of these problems of the earth together by saying that there is barely any time anymore to contradict our illnesses.
the message I got from the song is each human being on Earth is a child of God and we were created to love and to support one another. We fail in so many ways; where we can do good, we won't and prefer to ignore the suffering of those we have the power to help. In our acts of selfishness we have forgotten our real purpose in what to do with the days we are given and have turned away from our creator. Now we are so far gone we do nothing but destroy each other instead of loving as we should. Now that our ways of destruction is so evident, we wish we could have the time back.
God didn't turn his back on us because he does not exist.
Look around for proof. If he IS real, he HAS stopped keeping score. Or he has a pitch fork and horns.
Cancer, starvation, murder, i could go on and on....if he loves us, why are we living in a world like this? Maybe he should have cured all diseases on earth instead of showing off to a few locals by healing a couple of blind people and walking on a pond? Maybe a given us some proof that would have not left any doubt? One single undisputed religion would have saved a few lives over the years too, don't you think? You can worship whatever you want, but please don't expect everyone to agree with your 'beliefs'. I believe any god worthy of worship would make the world a much different place.
In reply to Steve- And please don't expect everyone to agree with your disbelief. Do you really think that having given us the gift of life God is supposed to protewct us from everything under the sun and the vicissitudes that life itself brings? That's a far more naive point of view than believing just in God in the first place. It isn't God's duty to control how we live our lives.
The most hilarious part of this thread is the passionate atheist getting all huffy on a LYRICS DEPOT page about his beliefs. Steve, don't ever change. That comment was the funniest thing I've seen all week.
