Midnight Train To Georgia Lyrics

Artist: Gladys Knight & The Pips

L.A. proved too much for the man,
So he's leavin' the life he's come to know,
He said he's goin' back to find
Ooh, what's left of his world,
The world he left behind
Not so long ago.
He's leaving,
On that midnight train to Georgia,
And he's goin' back
To a simpler place and time.
And I'll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia,
I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine.
He kept dreamin'
That someday he'd be a star.
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don't always come true.
So he pawned all his hopes
and he even sold his old car
Bought a one way ticket
To the life he once knew,
Oh yes he did,
He said he would
Be leavin
On that midnight train to Georgia,
And he's goin' back
To a simpler place and time.
And I'll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia,
I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine.
Go, gonna board, gonna board,
Gonna board the midnight train.
Gotta go, gonna board
Gonna board
Gonna board the midnight train
(repeat, fade)

Love it, love it, love it!!!! Enough said!!!!
by tracyflick on 10/20/2008 8:38am
I have always loved this song, but the lyrics are super-depressing. I get that things didn't work out for him in LA, and that sucks, but you have to keep working for your dreams. I mean, what exactly happened to this guy in LA? How was it too much for the man? What did he do? I want answers.
by Romeo on 12/18/2008 6:38am
Well Tracyflicks, apparently he went to L.A., like so many do, with unrealistic expectations, that the city and the world were waiting just for him...Not realising that you usually need to work hard for a long period of time to make it...don't think he did, cause "he sure found out the hard way,That dreams don't always come true" ....
A great fantastic lyric, about true love and sacrifice on her part...
by Bebe on 2/4/2009 9:00am

This song helped my mom decide to go with my dad when he was leaving for college. Because she would rather be in his world
than live without him in hers.
by heartbroken1 on 2/28/2009 10:17am
this song gives so much insight to the true meaning of love.if someone is willing to leave everything behind becausethe one they love didnt make it then that is some love. but truthfully when you love someone like that sacrifice is no problem

one of the very best songs ever. After all these years still has the same affect on my emotions. beautiful.. and yes it should be on American Idol but it would take alot to make it as good as Gladys and the Pips did.
by vito on 1/17/2010 2:08am
My nickname is Pip and I've always held this song/story close to my heart. So incredible the heart and sould that goes into that song by Gladys. I'm leaving...to see her sing it in Fla.!
by Bonni on 1/31/2010 4:05pm
My husband & I want to reconcile after going through some very hard times. We heard this song last night in the grocery store. The line he wanted me to hear was, "I'd rather live in his world Than live without him in mine," Oh God how I pray he knows that that is so true. I will, I will, I will...go anywhere as long as we are together!
by jjs on 4/10/2010 6:09pm

by BabaniKia form Port Harcourt on 7/14/2010 7:11am
First heard dis song in 2001 and cant stop imagining the genius that went into this masterpiece. It says a lot about what true luv and sacrifice ought to be but which alas we are missing in this age...A grrreeeeat song.

by Ms Sue on 9/13/2010 5:45pm
Ms Knight, music really misses you. This is when music was music and you can not get this kind of style and class in a song anymore. The sound the story is classic.
by Kathryn on 10/29/2010 5:56pm
What happened to good music? Today just doesn't cut it.

This music has what today's music is severely lacking.....heart and soul.
by Joanna on 11/1/2010 8:01am
Watching the Today Show and Neil Diamond singing this song. It will never go out of style. No matter if you have never been to Georgia, this song always stirs up good memories.

This is my favorite song of all times. I would like it sung at my funeral by Mrs. Gladys Knight and the Pipe..
by East Sussex Girl. on 12/15/2012 7:33am
Im doing this. Packing up my kids &leaving the performance world,go back home, to English counryside be with the man i cannot live without.
I dont think the song is sad. Fame, being a star has pay offs. People out there r climbing no time to make true friends. Its not a solid world. Its fake.
Now Im 'normal' with a great man who loves me as much as i love him. I can be a mother to my kids. Im near my family I left at 16, Im now 41. Ran to the big city lights. Home now and ive never felt happier.
Bonni what happened did it work out?

See also Don Williams "Tulsa Time." C&W song with same theme. His recording great and a nice cover by Eric Clapton.

"Well there I was in Hollywood/wishin' I was doin' good/
Talkin' on the telephone line/
But they don't need me in the movies/ and nobody sings my songs/
Guess I'm just wastin' time/
Well then I got to thinkin',/ man I'm really sinkin'/
And I really had a flash this time/
I had no business leavin'/and nobody would be grievin'/
If I went on back to Tulsa time.

This song is so amazing, what a great song writer this person must be to think of these lyrics and Gladys great voice. Love to meet her I'm heading to Memphis in Oct 2013 looking so forward to it.
by Southern Chick on 12/3/2013 4:25pm
This song was written by Jim Weatherly about Lee Majors and Farrah Fawcett. He said he called their house and Farrah told him she was taking a midnight plane to Houston, etc. The idea for the song was formed and the plane became a train and Houston became GA.
