Carefree Highway Lyrics
Artist: Gordon Lightfoot
CAREFREE HIGHWAY
Gordon Lightfoot
Pickin' up the pieces of my sweet shattered dream
I wonder how the old folks are tonight
Her name was Ann and I'll be damned if I recall her face
She left me not knowin' what to do
Carefree highway, let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you
Turnin' back the pages to the times I love best
I wonder if she'll ever do the same
Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied
With knowin' I got no one left to blame
Carefree highway, got ta see you my old flame
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you
Searchin' through the fragments of my dream-shattered sleep
I wonder if the years have closed her mind
I guess it must be wanderlust or tryin' to get free
From the good old faithful feelin' we once knew
Carefree highway, let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you
Let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, got ta see you my old flame
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

Comments/Interpretations
this is a great song i think of music all the time but i wont be going to go see Gordon Lightfoot if he returned to nashville becuse he mumbled on the stage its better to hear Gordon Lightfoot sing Carefree Highway back in 1974 i like Gordon Lightfoot
This is one of my Gordon lightfoots' favorite songs.I enjoy listening to it as I drive down a long, lonely stretch of road
I really like the lyrics. He is a very poetic songwriter. I would like to interview him just to talk to him about his inspiration for his music.
I could listen to Gordon Lightfoot anytime but the best is when I'm sittin' out back on porch during a rain. This song and Sundown are just awesome.
A special time remembered every time I hear this song.....a long highway drive to a (now) old flame who slipped away.
She's gone, and it's for the best, but it never fails to bring back the memories sharp and clear after 30 years.
Thanks, Gord................
this song was actually written for my friend Craig's mom Ann...she dated Gordon way back in the day in Canada. I tease him about it all the time cuz he's a musician here in Vegas and I always request Gordan Lightfoot songs for him to play!
HEARD CAREFREE IN THE .99 STORE, LOMITA, CA. WOW! SANG IT IN THE AISLES, THEN TO MY QUEEN, ANNIE. WE HAVE ALL BEEN ON THAT MEMORIE HIWAY. HOPE MR.LIGHTFOOT IS HAPPY AN HEALTHY
Lightfoot got the idea for this from a road sign he saw just north of Phoenix, Arizona. The Carefree Highway intersects I-17, and leads to Carefree, Arizona, a small community north of Phoenix.
In the April 1975 Crawdaddy magazine, he explained: "I thought it would make a good title for a song. I wrote it down, put it in my suitcase and it stayed there for 8 months."
The woman in the song was Lightfoot's girlfriend when he was 22. Her name was Ann.
I drive on Carefree Highway every day in N. Phoenix and can't help thinking of Gordan's song while driving on that beautiful highway.
This among other Greats made my Journals- My Favorite "Rainy Day People" these are my friends.
Her name waa Ann Banks
Takes me back to my truckin years...My tricycle years actually. Great music during a great time. 70's were like the 60's wonderful years for music. Now its American idol :/
Many motorcycle rides on Carefree highway in AZ on the way from Scottsdale to Jerome.
This is a beautiful line, one of my all-time favorites:
Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied
With knowin' I got no one left to blame
