For Lovin' Me Lyrics
Artist: Gordon Lightfoot
Album: Lightfoot!
That's what you get for lovin' me
That's what you get for lovin' me
Ev'ry thing you had is gone
As you can see
That's what you get for lovin' me
I ain't the kind to hang around
With any new love that I found
'Cause movin' is my stock in trade
I'm movin' on
I won't think of you when I'm gone.
So don't you shed a tear for me
B'cause I ain't the love you thought I'd be
I got a hundred more like you
So don't be blue
I'll have a thousand 'fore I'm through
Now there you go you're cryin' again
Now there you go you're cryin' again
But then someday when your poor heart
Is on the mend
Well I just might pass this way again
That's what you get for lovin' me
That's what you get for lovin' me
Everything you had is gone
As you can see
That's what you get for lovin' me
That's what you get for lovin' me

Comments/Interpretations
What a prick.
You're upset with the lyrics of a 48 year-old song, Michael Bishop? You must be very young. :-)
Michael's right....what a prick. I'm not "very young" but the lyrics are egocentric to say the least. Just as if you were to listen to Sting's words to Every Step You Take....all about stalking.
I'm also not very young but I've loved this song since I first heard it back in the '60s. It's a mistake to think any song is necessarily a reflection of the songwriter. Some beautiful love songs have been written by major jerks. The point of the song is that the guy is a self-centered schmuck and I've met more than a few just like the character in the song. It's been covered by multiple people and groups as well.
This song went around the folk circuit in the late 60s. I even performed it a few times on my shows. An additional parody/verse went around that added insult to injury. That verse goes:
I'm leaving you babe, now I'm gone
But I ain't leaving you alone
You will have some company
As you'll soon see
To keep reminding you of me.
Girls loved the bad boyz back in the day and I guess they still do. Yes, he is leaving but does leave it open when he says, "I just might pass this way again", even though we all know he won't. The 60's were fast cars, fast people, wash and wear once clothes then trash them or leave them at a three day concert.
