Sundown Lyrics
Artist: Gordon Lightfoot
Sundown
Gordon Lightfoot
I can see her lyin' back in her faded dress
In a room where ya do what ya don't confess
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you bin creepin' 'round my back stairs
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you bin creepin' 'round my back stairs
She's bin lookin' like a queen in a sailor's dream
And she don't always say what she really means
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain
I can picture every move that a man could make
Getting lost in her lovin' is your first mistake
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you bin creepin' 'round my back stairs
Sometimes I think it's a sin
When I feel like I'm winnin' when I'm losin again
I can see her lookin' fast in her faded jeans
She's a hard lovin' woman, got me feelin' mean
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you bin creepin' 'round my back stairs
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you bin creepin' 'round my back stairs
Sometimes I think it's a sin
When I feel like I'm winnin' when I'm losin' again

Comments/Interpretations
guy is cheating probably with an ex he left. He feels guilty but she feels good. I feel like Im winin but Im losin again. He knows its wrong and may cost him but he does it anyway.
He feels his woman is cheating on him, with someone that comes over to his place. It drives him to drink to forget her infidelity.
well first of all the first line is i can see her lyin' back in her satin dress not faded dress....its faded jeans in a following verse which is correct on here :-D
You got it all wrong, that is not what the song is about. It is about his ex-g/f. At the time he was doing drugs with his then g/f. Everytime he got high, he got mean and violent that he did not like who he was and wanted to change. So he was trying to quit, but found himself doing drugs again with his g/f and becoming mean again. He was co-Dependant on her, he was trying to quit, but she kept right on doing it. In order to quit drugs he had to quit being with her. But she came right on back to him, finding much temptation to be with her and doing drugs again. That is where he gets the line " I feel like I'm winning when I am loosing again". He did not want her around, did not want her around him and his house. She just had to walk completely out of his life, walk away into Sundown.
Sundown is a prostitute.
sundown is smack..she dont always
say what she realy means..
like the lady.. she dont lie ..
sun down take care..like make me feel no pain when i cop dope on my back stair
this song is about his then girlfriend cathy smith. She must have been something else, because several artists have written songs about her. she was also with John Belushi when he O.D'd. Lightfoot was said this girl hurt him more than any other woman. She's also listed in Lightfoot's divorce. At the time, it was the highest divorce settlement in Canadian history.
Yeah,....I'm taking Prostitute,...But I cant figure out why "he" has to tell "her" to stay away....
I was told this song was about the Vietnam War...
He was Canadian? Well then clearly, there is no explanation.
I think it's about jealousy and regret - he's jealous thus the sundown lyric and he's regretting being with her himself - 'feel like I'm winning when i'm losing again' - also the drug reference I think is the 'Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain
the song is about heroin. the girl would come up the back stairs.thats were the line (if i find you been creepin round my back stairs) in his hotel. he had a heroin problem .thats in his documentory. her nickname was (sundown)i won a radio contest with that piece of tribia. and im also the worlds best at rock trivia, ...just ask Masterblaster8@charter.net
The first line is wrong, it is a Satin Dress not a faded dress.
