She Wears Red Feathers
Guy Mitchell
Written by Bob Merrill
- Peaked at # 19 in 1953
(She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt)
(She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt)
She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea
A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes
And love in her heart for me
I work in a London bank, respectable position
From nine to three they serve you tea
But ruin your disposition
Each night of music calls, rather lost I seem
And once a pearl of a native girl came smilin' right at me
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea
A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes
And love in her heart for me
Goodbye to the London bank, I started in a-sailin'
The fourteenth day from Mandalay I spied her from the railin'
She knew I was on my way, waited, and was true
She said "You son of an Englishman, I've dreamed each night of you"
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea
A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes
And love in her heart for me
I went to her Ma and Pa and said I loved her only
And they both said we could be wed, oh, what a ceremony
An elephant brought her in, placed her by my side
While six baboons got out bassoons and played "Here Comes the Bride"
I'm back here in London town and, though it may sound silly
She's here with me and you should see us walk down Picadilly
The boys at the London bank kinda hold their breath
She sits with me and sips her tea which tickles them to death
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea
A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes
And love (and love) in her heart (in her heart) for me

My dad used to sing this when i was little ,, its a good song lmao :L x
4th line in second verse should read as follows:
"Each night at the Music Hall, travelogues I'd see" !!!
(and IIRC the end of the next line should read "keep smiling down at me")
Well done otherwise - they don't write 'em like that any more.
A Guy Mitchell lifelong fan
I agree with Angela that they don't wreite 'em like that anymore. Fantastic - super voice - backed by a dynamite full orchestra. No wimpy MIDI or sythesizer here. Just great music !!
I'M GOING TO SING "SHE WEARS RED FEATHERS" AT MY AUDITION FOR.....
YES...."BRITAIN GOT TALENT"
HAM IT UP ABIT ETC.
WISH ME LUCK..........
@ Angela
Your right with the 4th line but the "keep smiling down at me" is wrong.
it is "smiling right at me"
I can remember dasncing to this in a dance show when I WAS FIVE IM NOW 50! weore red gingham skirts and one shouldered tops and a flower in our hair.
They used to play this thumping gleeful song in the singalong warm-up session to Saturday morning pictures at the Odeon cinema, Middlesbrough in the early 1950s. The lyrics were projected onto the proscenium fire-curtain.
This song was a 'road trip song' for my family for years, and was my Daddy's favorite. This was before all cars had radios. I'm talking the 1950's!!
Back in the '50s, this was one of my most favorite songs. I thought I was the only one who remembered it until last winter when a local radio station played it. I almost freaked out. My wife was amazed that I was singing the lyrics along with Guy Mitchel. Also, "Each night of music calls" I thought it was "Each night at the music hall" any comments?
"Each night at the music hall, travelogues I'd see, and once a pearl of a native girl was smiling right at me"
Great music from a great era and a tremendous singer.
When I started school age 5 asked to sing a nursery rhyme I apparently laughed at that idea and sang she wears red feathers right through 1953
Reminds me of my mum singing this to me when I was a small child, about 60 years ago. I think of Guy Mitchell and this song with great affection. Happy days.
Been to sing for health with parent with dementia today decided to sing in the class as it brought back memories of my childhood but my memory is not as good as I thought and needed to check the words.
Before I could walk I used to hang on to the arm of a chair and wiggle my bum to this, encouraged by, and for the amusement of, my parents and other grown ups. This became part of my family folklore down the years.
Picked up a Guy Mitchell hits CD from a charity shop at the weekend and been playing it a few times since then.
I played this on my birthday on Friday and everyone joined in for a right good sing along
we just had my dads funeral , and this was one of his favourite songs and ours growing up , needles to say we all sang along at the funeral to this wonderful catchy tune . Wonderful memories to my dad
Couldn't agree more with everyone else who said: "THEY don't make them like this anymore!"
Many songs from the '50s & '60s were ones you could understand what 'THEY' were singing 🎶 - Compared to the Loud

At the time no-one could beat Guiy Mitchell especially with the French horn as a backing - he was el numero uno
Intersting to see the last comment is dated 2/2/2016. Where I am it's still 1/10/2016 and it's only 9:10 a.m.
Can't help but love this song. My uncle used to sing it to all the family when on a day out sitting on the wheel arches of his van with the door wide open. Simply loved to join in and still love it today 50 years later!!!
