Hip To Be Square Lyrics
Artist: Huey Lewis and The News
I used to be a renegade, I used to fool around
But I couldn't take the punishment, and had to settle down
Now I'm playing it real straight, and yes I cut my hair
You might think I'm crazy, but I don't even care
Because I can tell what's going on
It's hip to be square
I like my bands in business suits, I watch them on TV
I'm working out 'most everyday and watching what I eat
They tell me that it's good for me, but I don't even care
I know that it's crazy
I know that it's nowhere
But there is no denying that
It's hip to be square
It's not too hard to figure out, you see it everyday
And those that were the farthest out have gone the other way
You see them on the freeway, It don't look like a lot of fun
But don't you try to fight it; "An idea who's time has come."
Don't tell me that I'm crazy
Don't tell me I'm nowhere
Take it from me
It's hip to be square

What does this mean???
huey Lewis is horrible and so is the news the greatest band of there time was the Beatles John Lennon ALL DAY!
lmao - It's about all the hippies/freaks and how the ones that were the most radical became the biggest yuppies driving BMWs and such. For all of those people it's now (or was back when the song was written) "hip" to be square.
i loooovvvvvvvveeeeeeeee this song...its fabulous!!
Love this song
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83,I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. [rapidly, as if agitated] But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself
"HEY PAUL!"
*WHACKED in the face*
Caught him outdoors at a county fair a couple weeks ago, the first time, my shame. Absolutely the best of the best, no contest. He still gets major air when he jumps to end the tune, too, that's hip.
If you want to compare him to an Elvis, you might have the wrong one in mind, but that's more the kind of honest childlike thing that's in this music.
As to these lyrics, the final irony is if the Beamer Yupsters had really been up to producing economically the kind of consistent quality and quantity that Huey and Co. have and still are producing, we would not be in the MESS we are in today.
So sad, that.
pATRICK BATEMAN-VERY FUNNY AND OH SO TRUE dAVE YOU HAVE TO SEE AMERICAN PSYCHO TO KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT.
Best song EVER!! Lol, American Psycho FTW

i totally have to agree with Patrick Bateman. By the way... no feelings at all? ;-)
I'm hip and square!
great song
"Hey is this a raincoat?"
"YES IT IS!"
It's definitely hip to be square.
I thought it said "hip to be *a* square" though, because the first time I heard this song was on Sesame Street when I was young. There was a sketch with a square (as in the polygon) dancing and singing some child-learning-ised version of this song! Quality times.
Wow! This song tells you how I cleaned up my act!
Huey Lewis and the News. Yeah, they're okay.
I like to be round ;-)
