If you start at the correct time during the organ solo, you will hear that the organist, plays a perfect harmony to, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". His father was a church organist.

@ derbeder ... i would think iron butterfly knows what the song is called .... i've got the record/album ... and the song is clearly called in a gadda da vida. it was supposed to be in the garden of eden, but they were all way too stoned ... thus the seventeen minute song !!!

My husband, who died two years ago, was twenty years older than I. If not for him, I wouldn't know this most awesome song and the story behind it. Writer was drunk, friend came home, told him he wrote a song callled in a gada da vida, friend wrote that down and hte name stuck. I love iron butterfly and thank my Tommy for introducing them to me!

According to a MusicMax special referencing early pioneers & influence's of Metal: The singer spoke little to no English, and after hearing it sung; he mimicked the sounds rather than learning (and understanding) the words. As he particularly struggled with the phonetic enunciation of the title/chorus line, practicality prompted the studio/label to rename the track.
