Hallelujah Lyrics
Artist: Jeff Buckley
Album: Grace
(L. Cohen)
Originally contained in Leonard Cohen's Various Positions
I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this :
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrough ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Well, maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

I love the way Jeff Buckley sings it. It is awesome the way it reaches way down and touches your soul. That's what his version does to me. I have heard his version on both E.R. and Without a Trace television shows.
I love the way Kate Voegele sings it she has such an amazing voice and one tree hill is the best :D:D
Kurt nilsen, Espen Lind, Askil holm og nd Alejandro fuentes sing this song perfectly!!
Have a new artist you all might want to check out, Hana Pestle at Hana Pestle.com she sings this song with such feeling and her voice is amazing, she's touring w Blues Traveler, Live, Collective Soul, went to this concert, gifted young woman, also belts Janis Joplin tunes. Give her a listen.
Listen to Brandi Carlile's cover---it is beautiful, haunting and will give you chill bumps.
You are all morons, Jeff Buckleys version is by far the best out of the many attempts at this song. Cohen's lyrics are incredible but Buckley deserves the credit for making this song such a classic. His version is number 250 in Rolloing Stones top 500 songs of all time, pretty conclusive evidence that Buckleys version is superior. His lyrical guitar work and the falsetto at the end of the song combined is the most beautifully haunting musical arrangement i have ever heard.
Kate voegele doesnt sing it better. Sorry but i really think jeff does it the best, i can listen to him sing it so many times, but with kate voegele i really cant, she makes it way to fancy and seems to try to hard, pushing her voice out or whatever.
Jeff buckleys version is the best.
The Kate Voegele version is majestic...

Just heard KD Lang sing it at the Olympic Opening Ceremony!! Awesome! I also heard the "Canadian Tenors" sing it on Oprah and they have a great version also.
Can someone give a definitive meaning of the lyrics please?
(a Leonard Cohen fan from the early 70's- still searching for the meaning) I'd love to hear it in Leonard's own "voice."
Thank you
Jeff Buckley's version is the most sincere, my opinion the best cover. It's almost poetic considering Jeff's death.
