Calypso
John Denver
To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean,
to ride on the crest of a wild raging storm
To work in the service of life and living,
in search of the answers of questions unknown
To be part of the movement and part of the growing,
part of beginning to understand,
Aye Calypso the places you've been to,
the things that you've shown us,
the stories you tell
Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit,
the men who have served you so long and so well
Hi dee ay-ee ooo doo-dle oh
oo do do do do do doo-dle ay yee
doo-dle ay ee
Like the dolphin who guides you, you bring us beside you
To light up the darkness and show us the way
For though we are strangers in your silent world
To live on the land we must learn from the sea
To be true as the tide and free as a wind swell
Joyful and loving in letting it be
Aye Calypso the places you've been to,
the things that you've shown us,
the stories you tell
Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit,
the men who have served you so long and so well
Hi dee ay-ee ooo doo-dle oh
oo do do do do do doo-dle ay yee
doo-dle ay ee
he dee Ay-ee
Hi dee oh ooo
hi dee ayee
hi dee oh ooo

Comments/Interpretations
I remember singing this as a kid....
John denver is the undisputed king of country music.but here in Kenya it is so hard to get hismusic cassetes.please help us the his music cds and cassetes
I have a small pinus like john
my colleague continually plays this in her office. I used to like John, but this has me bordering on homicidal rage.
This song by John Denver is at the heart of everything he has ever done in his career and it is sung so very well, with meaning and pathos.
My partner & I stood beneath a boat sign on the marina jetty of Port Douglas. We had an amazing night with dinner & a walk, somehow we arrived there beneath that sign with our arms embraced. We talked love peotry & we knew from that night that we were in love & we were going to spend alot of time together. We walk away with the calypso moment in our hearts as it was.I later looked up the word ; West Indian song, usually about subject of current interest, & with syncopated rythem. Today on the radio there was anouncement about the aniversary of his death flying planes. They mentioned this song, so my partner looked it up. I love the uncanny relation to the ocean, that dolphin was beneath our jetty. His name was Jesus. Love you babe.
I really appreciate the lyrics, they were difficult to find!! However, the line is missing "the" as follows:
To work in the service of life and THE living,
Hope this helps keep the lyrics coming!!
John Denver is quite bad
this song is stuck in my head, coz i've listened 2 it for 2 weeks at my work experience.
THANK YOU
for adding the "yodel" lyrics !
Absolutely beautifully sung. what heart and soul, especially the yodel. that falsetto tenor really made me feel something
John Denver is really nature's bard
and what a talented songwriter !
Lovely songs and great philosophy ; )
This song is about the new world order. Beware people. Really read Papa John's lyrics.
techno man what do you mean john denver was bad? he was awesome! shame about his death
Jhon the king of country songs. He showed us what a country song is.
We sang this song in elementary school!! I'm in high school now and I still remember parts of it
Really? Who knew that Jacques Cousteau's boat "Calypso" and his book about undersea exploration "The Silent World" were really part of the "New World Order"? What next, "Rocky Mountain High" is really about a Communist plot?
It is the worst song Ever
They sang this on Mike and Molly last night. Funny, funny stuff.
John Denver you are the best!!!
Cassettes?...What year is it I'm Kenya and why does Denver have his shirt off on that album cover ?
he has shirt off because he looks like a newt
I saw him in concert. He was incredibly talented, as was the band who played with him. And yes, I watched the Jacques Ives Cousteau tv shows a long time ago too, and loved them. Good song.
