The Old House Lyrics
Artist: John McDermott
Album: Danny Boy
Lonely I wander through scenes of my childhood
They bring back to memory the happy days of yore
Gone are the old folk, the house stands deserted
No light in the window, no welcome at the door
Here's where the children played games on the heather
Here's where they sailed their wee boats on the burn
Where are they now? Some are dead, some have wandered
No more to their home will the children return
Lonely the house now, and lonely the moorland
The children have scattered, the old folk are gone
Why stand I here, like a ghost or a shadow?
‰is time I was movin', †ˆis time I passed on.

Comments/Interpretations
THIS WAS ONE OF MY FATHERS FAVOURITE SONGS, IN HIS TIME A WELL KNOWN SINGER IN CORK CITY
I PLAN TO SING AND RECORD IT AND HOPE I CAN DO AS GOOD A JOB AS HIMSELF. I PLAY THE KEYBOARD AND SING..AGE 74 NICE WORK JOHN
i believe this was the last song that the great John mccormick sang in public.
i remember my mother singing it in the fourties
This is i think the only song my father knew.He would sing it when he was well oiled. My brothers and sisters hated this and similer songs. We liked singers such as Sinatra,Como.Dino and pop stars like Buddy Holly, the Everly brothers and of course Elvis. Before these great stars,Ireland was a musical waste land.
mccormick at his best lovely
i like this song
Miss Kelly at Holy Rosary School Wicklow, Eire taught us this song in Grade 3. I checked to make sure I still knew the words.
Theres something in this song that gets into your heart, making you realize the void that is left when you lose your loved ones
I stand like a ghost now myself. How music can achieve so much with so little effort.A wonderful song.
My Aunt and Father always sang this song. They were from Co. Kerry. We would all be in tears. Now, my parents house is empty and we have all scattered. So sad!
I want the last two lines on my tombstone.
