Misread Lyrics

Artist: Kings Of Convenience

Album : Riot On an Empty Street

If you wanna be my friend
You want us to get along
Please do not expect me to
Wrap it up and keep it there
The observation I am doing could
Easily be understood
As cynical demeanour
But one of us misread...
And what do you know
It happened again

A friend is not a means
You utilize to get somewhere
Somehow I didn't notice
friendship is an end
What do you know
It happened again

How come no-one told me
All throughout history
The loneliest people
Were the ones who always spoke the truth
The ones who made a difference
By withstanding the indifference
I guess it's up to me now
Should I take that risk or just smile?

What do you know
It happened again
What do you know

I like what they're saying about how sometimes friends use you..
by no one on 12/19/2008 4:51am
the song is truly relaxing, but i see a different meaning to it. there seems to be another side. it reminds (for an opinion) me of what happens when you're very close to someone, but in the end it just seems to fall apart. though this is quite unfortunate, it seems to happen to most of us at some point, but that is another part of being human - being misread.
by Emmett on 2/7/2009 12:04pm
Amazing track with powerful lyrics. The music and lyrics work well together.
by Feranndo Flaminio on 2/19/2009 2:36pm
I love this track so much...It seems to me that you are in window in Rio de Janeiro Sunday afternoon raining...Such Bossa Nova swing !!
Congratulations on that music as well.
by deena on 2/26/2009 1:38pm
Never can get sick of this song, sweet and simple. Yeah I think 'no-one' is right- and also 'the lonliest people were the ones who always spoke the truth'- good line!..But thats lonely/ alone out of choice right?..that's how I'm taking it.
by Max on 3/1/2009 5:29pm
Guys, this is a great song, but it is about friends, and when you tell smb the truth, like to your friend, you may lose him/her. Just because of being misread. You did not mean to say smth just to offend, but you was misread. Simple as that.

by Kritter on 4/4/2009 10:15pm
It's interesting reading about the different perspectives and interpretations of this song. I felt it had to do with letting go of the expectations we create. Meaning you can't hold onto what you have in that moment for ever. These exchanges in our relationships need to be respected in order to let them go when it is time to end. "what do you know, it happened again" meaning, what do you know, a person has felt sorry for themselves because they had to let go of an experience that made them happy. Things begin and end. I find this song is about respecting this and letting it be. People who admitt this can be seen as "cynical" and can be left lonely because of others fears of this "cynical" person being okay with letting them go. Really they are respecting and accepting the honesty of natures cycles and the gifts it provides at different times, rather than using and abusing for ones personal utilization. Anyways, that's my personal perception. :)

I sense a much more deep meaning in this song than what I see from everyone else. Even the band may not notice it... or I'm crazy.
by Helena on 8/20/2009 1:51pm
Beautiful song!
I like the lines:
"How come no-one told me
All throughout history
The loneliest people
Were the ones who always spoke the truth
The ones who made a difference
By withstanding the indifference"

The ones who made a difference, by withstanding the indifference...
That lines are genius! To be different, and dont care. Just to make a difference, is something really hard. amazing song.

Love KOC so much .
They always create this kind of great song.
by John E Ratt on 4/7/2010 11:20am
Delete all the lyrics and this remains a beautifully lonely tune... which is the point of the lyrics. The writer is stating if you want a true friendship outside the all too common disingenous niceties routinely spewed about, the writer is going to speak the truth. And that true friendship is a noble goal. And those (throughout history) who speak the truth can be shunned for doing so, so the question is whether to smile and provide insincere niceties or "take the risk" of being truthful, though it can often hurt. If the relationship can handle truth, it is a true and noble friendship.
by nomo on 4/25/2010 12:53am

John E Ratt, you seem to be making a lot of sense, as well as Kritter. The concepts are kind of intertwined. He says it's great that you want to get along, maybe you're sincere and maybe you're trying to get ahead. Either way, I'm gonna be myself and tell the truth. Maybe you won't like it, maybe you're just gonna misread me and we'll grow apart for reasons we could have avoided, but either way I'm gonna keep being honest as I know to be honest. If we stay friends, that's awesome, but if circumstances lead us apart, it's something we have to face. The important part is to be sincere through out it all

John Ratt and Hassen, This is the point I see as well. The point is quite clear to me. It is about truth in friendship or, for that matter, truth in life. Truth can be painful and is often an enemy to the lies of which most nations and, thus, their societies, of this world are made up of...I have many "what do you know, it happened again" experiences because I took the "risk" and did not just "smile" and fit into the "means" of friendship , which is not a real friendship at all.
by James Doberman on 12/15/2010 2:41am
A haunting melody, easily enjoyed on repeat...

Most people don't like to hear the truth. Hearing the truth in one's life has a way of demolishing the caricature of ourselves that many of us have built up in our own minds: about our sense of esteem, our sense of worth, our sense of importance, our goodness as members of the Human family. We juxtapose ourselves to others who seem to have the strengths that we wish for ourselves. Ironically, the truth-tellers can sometimes be seen as liars. It takes a good bit of introspection to determine the truth about oneself. Once attained, only then does one have the confidence – true confidence – to laugh at the liars and not suffer doubt at their “painful truths.” Notwithstanding that, however, none of us is perfect and most do not want to admit our flaws. Wouldn't it be terrible if we “Misread” a truth-teller whom we wrongly painted as a cynic or a liar and thus gave up the chance of friendship with someone truly worthy of that rare designation: friend?
