Route 66 Lyrics

Artist: Nat King Cole

If you ever plan to motor west,
travel my way, take the highway that is best.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

It winds from Chicago to LA,
more than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

Now you go through Saint Looey
Joplin, Missouri,
and Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona.
Don't forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
when you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

solo

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
when you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

I never paid much attention to this song until I seen the movie cars, now here I am looking up the lyrics. and as for those who comment on whether you like it or not..,it doesn't really matter much to me.

I was in the army from 1954 to 1956. I sang Route 66 in a quartet in an army talent contest, and we won.
We could have sung on TV a well known show, but out assignment orders came 1st. I never knew fame!

I Have traveled Route 66 from Olkahoma City to Amarillo in 1963 and then in 2010 on my Harley from Gallup NM to Oatman AZ. What a cool trip.

Bobby Troup wrote the words and music. I preformed the musical background for Nat Cole's recording.

Reading Billy Connollys book about this iconic road. Loved the Stones version. So sad it seems to be crumbling. Would love to drive it one day....in a mustang!

When I turn around to shake hands with Booby Troop, the songwriter of Route sisty-six,little did I know that years later after the deadly twister that hit Joplin, Missouri, his words about Joplin would reverberate around the world and be the catalysis for the book MAYDAY IN JOPLIN.
by himynameismymane on 3/28/2012 4:07pm
we are doin this song at school
by Donald Leon Clugston on 7/25/2012 6:19am
As the book, Mayday In Joplin, says nature is now our number one terrorist. So, what can we do about it?

I love both the highway and the song. My husband and I drove Route 66 when we moved from Ann Arbor, MI to LA right after our marriage in July 1963. Glenn Frey has a really good version of this American classic on his new CD After Hours.
