Golden Earrings Lyrics

Golden Earrings
Peggy Lee
Music and Lyrics by Victor Young and Jay Livingston/Ray Evans
From the movie Golden Earrings
There's a story the gypsies know is true
That when your love wears golden earrings,
She (he) belongs to you.
An old love story that's known to very few,
But if you wear those golden earrings,
Love will come to you.
By the burning fire, they will glow with ev'ry coal.
You will hear desire whisper low inside your soul.
So be my gypsy;
Make love your guiding light,
And let that pair of golden earrings
Cast their spell tonight.

Comments/Interpretations
This tune pops into mind once in awhile.
Saw the movie right after the war.
The song in it made an impression.
Remember the film well. Ray Milland and Marlene Dietrich.
Saw the movie in the 40's. Really enjoyed Ray Milland. Learned a lot about the Roma (gypsies). Would really like to see the movie again.
Taking class on the Roma this week.
Was the composer og "Golden Earrings" inspired by the Hungarien folksong "Mustalainen"?

To reply to Mr. Scott, yes, I think Golden Earrings was inspired by the Hungarian song, Czak egy Kislany.
The Finns call it Mustalainen. Victor Young spent time in Poland as a boy studying music. He may have heard it there. Since the song is Gypsy, it probably was played throughout Europe.
This song has such a warm place in my families heart.. My mom now 79 used to sing it to her grandmother. I (51) am now learning it to sing to my mom.
Love this song. Remember it as a favorite of my dad, when I was a boy. I just turned 73. Thank you.
What is this crap "She (he)" doing in there? I can't recall hearing that.
