And I Moved Lyrics
Artist: Pete Townshend
Album: Empty Glass
And I moved
As I saw him looking in through my window
His eyes were silent lies
And I moved
And I saw him standing in the doorway
His figure merely filled the space
And I moved
But I moved toward him
And I moved
And his hands felt like ice exciting
As he laid me back just like an empty dress
And I moved
But a minute after he was weeping
His tears his only truth.
And I moved
But I moved toward him

Comments/Interpretations
Who is he? Who is he moving toward? This is such a great song because we can all answer these questions differently and all be correct. Who do you feel has "tears as his only truth"? And you move toward him. The music fits the lyrics perfectly. Townshend hits something deep here.
i think hes moving towards his boyfriend. when u think about it ROugh Boys is incredibly gay, i doubt you can honestly explain it any other way. So is this song..he gets laid by his boyfriend...then townshend or whoever moves away because hes scared about being gay and his boyfriend starts crying. then after seeing that hes "truly" hurting the other dudes feelings he moves again, but this time towards him. whn they first cath each others eye i think the guy looking through the window is trying to act str8 or something but then they cant control themselves
how did you come up with that? i...agree?? ...but i'm trying not to.
In the book 'Behind Blue Eyes' (a biography of Pete Townshend) it's stated that he was asked by Bette Midler's management to write a song for her because she liked his work. So he wrote this for Bette Midler. But her management considered it too smutty and never gave it to her. Pete then recorded it himself but kept the gender female, causing a lot of speculation about his sexual orientation.
This song is so powerful.
Joey, do you REALLY think he's gay?
This song was writen for a chic.
According to the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll (2nd Ed.) "Rough Boys" and this song are "about homosexuality". pg. 1076
I believe he was moving toward the Ghost of Keith Moon,...
Who gives a fuck
Navy Seal -- made me laugh out loud... right on, man.
The song was written by his daughter....
Haunting and hot!
I WAS 13 WHEN I GOT THIS RECORD IT WAS 1979 AND THINGS WERE NOT AS OPEN AS THEY ARE TODAY. I REMEMBER BEING CONFUSED MY HERO WAS GAY BUT EVERY ONE HAD TOLD ME THAT WAS SICK AND PERVERSE ONCE I GREW OLDER AND FOUND THAT SOME OF MY FRIENDS WERE GAY, WITNESSING THE PAIN AND HURT THE WORLD PUT THEM THROUGH AND SEEING HOW A LOT OF THEM HAD TO LIVE WITH DOULING PERSONALITYS BROUGHT A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON THIS ALBUM. ALMOST 30 YEARS LATER THESE SONGS ARE ONLY NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR WHAT THEY REALLY MEAN AND HOW DEEP THEY REALLY REACH
I think its about moving toward a spiritual higher power ,.,.,.
Your all Daft, Gay, Spiritual, a song for Bette Midler etc. What a load of rubbish.
It's a song about buying a used car. Then Townshend sees a duck with one leg & he runs it over in his new car.
Ann is right about this song, and on Rough Boys he was mocking gay Americans and British punks for the same "uniforms" or look - leather jackets, attitude etc. This song has been in my head all day. Great piano on this album!
Townshend wrote this song for Bette Midler.
Bette turned it down as being too overtly sexual. Odd for her to say.
He & Bette wee great friends. Still are, according to a recent interview.
best song i heard in clear lake ca.1982
My mentally ill, older, brother who I loved dearly, bought this record back when it was new. He swore it was about the devil as he had a similar experience in his illness; so I will always think of that. That was over 30/40 years ago...God Bless, Pete...he evokes so many different interpretations. I think it is a beautiful song about being blown away by love...It just does that to us...and that is pretty cool.
You people do realize Pete admitted he had a long term boyfriend while he was married, Right??
