I'm real confused about this song. I knew he had a song called Pope but only just heard it for the first time a few minutes ago. I immediately came in to read the lyrics. And when he says at the end "You don't understand". I'm like yea dude. I really don't effin' understand! What am I supposed to do with this now!

This is a great hip hop song. Prince is not a bad rapper, but not great, either.

His intent is to have a relationship that is "spirtual", not what society sees or expects. Playing off a wordly perception that the president is bound by rules and the Pope's "rules" are somewhat more ethereal. Of course, in typical Prince fashion, he is somewhat graphical (although metophorical at times) on just how invovled the relationship shouldcouldwould be when there were no boundaries or inhibitions.

It's a good song, it's 21 years old so the sound is from that time. The song is about having absolute power like a Pope, and not appearing to be powerful and having to run things through a "slow moving parlimentry hackin bandwagon" this is during the time he as fighting with his label Warner Brothers so there are digs at rappers who run labels but don't have final say. "Your cars got mags (90s term for fancy wheels) that be dippy dippy dope, but the whole damn nation has the same. Honeys (girls) only flock to the bee that's the pope (top dog) not the president with government lame (not absolute power) hope that helps
