Common People Lyrics
Artist: Pulp
Album: Different Class
She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge,
she studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College,
that's where I,
caught her eye.
She told me that her Dad was loaded,
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola."
She said "Fine."
and in thirty seconds time she said,
"I want to live like common people,
I want to do whatever common people do,
I want to sleep with common people,
I want to sleep with common people,
like you."
Well what else could I do -
I said "I'll see what I can do."
I took her to a supermarket,
I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere,
so it started there.
I said pretend you've got no money,
she just laughed and said,
"Oh you're so funny."
I said "yeah?
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here.
Are you sure you want to live like common people,
you want to see whatever common people see,
you want to sleep with common people,
you want to sleep with common people,
like me."
But she didn't understand,
she just smiled and held my hand.
Rent a flat above a shop,
cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool,
pretend you never went to school.
But still you'll never get it right,
cos when you're laid in bed at night,
watching roaches climb the wall,
if you call your Dad he could stop it all.
You'll never live like common people,
you'll never do what common people do,
you'll never fail like common people,
you'll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and drink and screw,
because there's nothing else to do.
Sing along with the common people,
sing along and it might just get you through,
laugh along with the common people,
laugh along even though they're laughing at you,
and the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that poor is cool.
I want to live with common people,
I want to live with common people etc...

greatest song ever lol
awaysome
this is not a full text!
I JUST FUCKING ADORE PULP. HEART ME LONG TIME.
POESIA PURA
the best song of Pulp
It's missing the verse that begins "Like a dog lying in the corner..."
It is a great song. especially the version with William Shatner speaking the lines - it is great - I can just imagine his character from Boston Legal (Denny Crane) doing it.
Shatner's version was better.
LOS AMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
"She told me that her Dad was loaded" ?
can anyone explain who is "Dad" here?
"dad" is her father
"loaded" means he has loads of money
this would make a really good punk song. picture it with a quicker tempo and more angry and imagine the pistols playing it.
still great as it is though.
thanks amigo
William Shatners version is 10 times better haha!
Theres a verse missing :(
"Shatner's version was better."
It, amazingly, was... Live long and prosper!
Woot Shatner
my favorite song of all time.
seriously amazing.
...verse missing though?
Amazing song. Catchy tune and amazing lyrics. Best lyrics ever. It's 100% true. None of it is exaggerated at all, and it's a very impacting song.
Very underated song!
There is an MIA lyric though. :(
Oh, Ye. Glad you Like THe Song. My Aunty Is THe KeyBoard Player. So I Know The Band. I Agree, Awesome Song x
LOVE IT!
I am missing a lot of couplets at the end...
"She just smiled and held my hand"
thats like a whole different world right there. best part of the song.
Mmhmm, Pulpp, me love long time. (y)
x
yeah i agree. that verse isssssss bootiful
amazing, so true, love it!
beleive it or not i for a fact know the girl (woman now) that this song was written for. and i have absolutely no reason to make it up. shes living in greece now with her family. its amazing the things he wrote about her.
I met jarvis in chile, a really few people knows them there. He's really nice...

this song is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what was the missing verse?
Great Song! and so true! Pulp number one!
Best Song Ever!!! Here are the missing verses:
Like a dog lying in a corner,
they'll bite you and never warn you.
Look out.
They'll tear your insides out.
'Cause Everybody hates a tourist,
especially one who thinks
it's all such a laugh.
Yeah, and the chip stains' grease
will come out in the bath.
You will never understand
how it feels to live your life
with no meaning or control
and with nowhere left to go.
You're amazed that they exist
and they burn so bright,
while you can only wonder why.
i have been told to use these lyrics 4 gcse composition and i am not because it is too ... bad
whhoooooooww!
increible tema!!!
best-song-ever!
This song says so much, all the mockneys in shorditch need to hear this song... becasue they "think that poor is cool"
Yes I love the lyrics and the rythm of this Pulp song. It points on the vain looking for the "Common people" all tourists seek - everywhere.
heard it first in 1995, and 14 years on, it still rocks!
woooowwww ...this song always makes me feel better, dunno actually why, but i love it :)
I love this song makes me fell so happy and cosy inside when i havnt listened to it in a while!
Rich girls love to fuck me cause i'm poor. They think it's cool... let them think that as long as i enjoy...
I wanna live like Hindi people.
"Comb your hair and be polite
Do your homework every night
Don't smoke fags and don't play pool
Do extremely well at school
Take a medical degree
Graduate at 33
Move back in with mom and dad
Even though they drive you raving mad
You sure... You wanna live like Hindi People"
I really love this song. x

Love it, Love it, Love it!!!!!
It was my favorite song for a lot of years. It's so fun if i think that i didn't understand the meaning. Music is the universal language
The truest and saddest song I've ever heard.
one of my favs...love it
May Powell, How can you find the most exciting, dynamic, brilliantly clever, heart-felt, and incredibly powerful song in the world sad?
It's very clever. I believe the sad reference is to the subject of the song - the middle class, spoon fed, idiot trying to be cool by acting a bit rough around the edges.
I'm proper middle class and proud of it! :)
This is sad but true :-) great lyrics !!!!!!!!!! i just love this song!!!
haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Incorrect and incomplete! so many comments stating the same, does'nt anyone notice? heh!
Goerge Orwell got it spot on in "1984" and Jarvis set it to music.
Since when are the Greek people,Pretentious art fart, rich kids slumming it? Greeks are poor hard working people, Who grew up as peasants like me.Its' a great song none the less,But Mr. "Shats" versions much better. Dont come to NYC, because , I'll make you eat the first sentence on stage. You too cool shabby chic poser !
@ captpike714:
Well, in the nineties, only rich Greek people could afford to send their children abroad for studying. It has a point.
Nowadays anyone can go study abroad.
Regardless of the nationality, there are a lot of young people today with parent's money who want to rebel from all that well being, but in the end embrace all of that hard cash.
I think this song satires it in a very poetic way. Love it!
william shatners version is complete fucking rubbish.
jarvis went to my school.
im poor poor poor n when things get realy bad financially i love just to forget everything av a drink wiv mi mates n family n blast this song. dont know why but it makes me feel better. think its realy uplifting. its saying depressing stuff but its a n uplifting song, think thats hard to achieve but wey hey he has.
I'm not a big fan of Pulp's other material or Jarvis's solo stuff, but THIS SONG IS PURE GENIUS!!!! Listened to it this AM on the way to work. I remember one time years ago listening to this song in my car and crying. It summed up my life pretty well at the time.
FREAKS, like common people....
i love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree on Vongrimm - abosolutely rubbish.
Cool song! Haven't heard it for years and now saw it at TV.
wonderful lyrics
absolutely fantastic!!
What a genius Jarvis is; he should be made a Lord at least..
But really......who wants to live like common people.
I'm common. Dead common - and Jarvis is a genius.
well, it makes common people realized how blessed they are. (we are). love Jarvis!!!

Grupiepa, he's really not saying common people are blessed at all. He's saying poor people have it really, really hard, and rich people can be ignorant.
St Martins is still very much like this, polarised between rich idlers who want to work vaguely in fashion or somesuch, and people working night jobs to fund their study.
Overseas students in england have to pay way more than brits, europes about 4 times the fees, outside europe is something like 10 times as much iirc.
This says more about class in England than a million words of academic sociological analysis.
As a socialist and a product of the Britpop era, I want this played at my funeral!
Genius. This song nails it. If you look for a song with balls, more than just pop, this must be in the top ten of all time.
Great , bitter , sour , but true life.
There always will be great British music with social message!
hi m8 you are the best ever
What an awesome song!Long live Jarvis!Long live Pulp!This is a classic :)
i think that better song's...
Bcoz' not a lot of girl's who want to live with poor condition or live with comment people.... The poor it's cool that's the point of this song's....
Great song. Music and lyrics.
Thats to say that in the nineties the Greek dads were still loaded and could send their precious daughters at St Martin's college or at any posh college, which is opposite to nowadays, where Greece is the last in the rank and families struggle to cope. The good times have passed fast, Greeks are now the cool poor, and only coz they joined the bloody euro.
Was so happy to see Pulp will be at Leeds Festival 2011, playing to Common People, will be amazing to see them!
sorry to piss off the loyal brits, but @eric who said this would make a good punk song, mcr has done a cover - love it!
First time I heard this, I cried b/c it took me back to my youth when I was very very poor. I'm not now, but I sure do appreciate what I have, unlike the girl in the song. Truer lyrics were never spoken.
the "lost verse" ppl are referring to only appears on the album version, this lyrics is for the single version.
it doesn't have all the lyrics there!
We are playing this in our presentation on Monday!!!!! :) About Left Realism!! :O
I like pies. <3
Diamond song, pure brilliance!
first time i listen to Pulp, and i reallllly love the lyrics! they are good!
Common People and Disco 2000 was the songs that really defined Pulp for me.. They still do to this day.
Great songs, should become a part of the british cultural heritage
My chemical romance cover...*___* ♥
fak fak damn ugly
Somehow bloody Britishers got sumthng good. British accent makes me sick.
I wish this was done by some american rock artist.
But you don't get poor yanks studying at St. Martin's College. Sorry that you can't stand our accent, just be glad that we couldn't be bothered to continue ruling your benighted country and left it to the savages.
Oh, Jack. Sweet Jack. You need to make yourself some more bears this morning. Now go back to your room and bite your pillow, okay?
Only Jarvis Cocker could get away with rhyming 'loaded' with 'coca cola'
love the story it tells, what a babe of a song.
Escolteu la versio dels Manel!!!!
Please hear "Common pleople" adapted from MANEL .... Great !!!!
one of best song ever!!!
What a great song... Ever...
excellent lyrics. and sadly so true
seriously i dare him to find now in 2012 in greece a girl whose dad is loaded and she studies abroad. good times when this song was made. long gone glory greece.
i am greek so spare me one.
The Shatner version kicks the original's ass, amazingly enough. It has the fierceness and tempo this song needs. Unfortunately the original sounds like it was sung by the very hipsters the song mocks.
Irony is the song is written by a Western band, part of a culture where even poor is often far from what suffering some people experience.
Might as well just admit we're all mostly a bunch of spoiled brats.
Irony is that comment is written by a Western kid, part of a culture where even poor is often far from what suffering some people experience.
Might as well just admit they're all mostly a bunch of spoiled brats.
I have nothing against Shatner but I do not get how people can say that his version is better. This is the original and it was sung about Brits by Brits, it has a message in this version rather than just funny for money.
i like the my chemical romance cover better.
My Chemical Romance.. are they still around?
thanks for the lyrics..its a good song to talk about belonging!
Awesome, I love it. Hacia tiempo que no la escuchaba, y es simplemente la ostia. Vaya temazo!!!!
You all must be on shitty drugs because this song blows big hairy donkey balls.
