The first time I heard this or any Randy Newman song was in the 1971 dark comedy movie "Cold Turkey." Even though I was 11 at the time (there weren't very many "family" movies then), I never forgot the song and how evocative it was. I remembered the movie, too. When I learned the composer was Randy Newman, I became a fan ever since.

Kathy, people don't realize that Randy is most likely being ironic. God give you all his love but does nothing to stop human suffering. God just listens and smiles.

Let Kathy be encouraged if she's encouraged by it. Music means different things to different people. I think Randy would be happy to let it mean whatever Kathy wanted it to mean.
