Ruby Jean and Billie Lee Lyrics

Artist: Seals & Crofts
Album: Collection

(lyrics and music by James Seals & Dash Crofts, 1973)
From the albums DIAMOND GIRL (1973), GREATEST HITS (1975) and
THE SEALS & CROFTS COLLECTION (1979).

Oh Ruby Jean, last night I dreamed I was runnin' somewhere beyond the stars.
I called out to you, and you answered softly.
You are the children's eyes, and I'm the days gone by.
Oh Ruby Jean, it doesn't seem like a long, long time, since we were born again.
Into the dazzling light, uniting black and white.
You are the rich brown earth, and I'm the flowers that grow.

We'll have children (Lua), of the Kingdom (Joshua).
They won't be torn by war, nor will they
Kill or hate, or hestitate, to love. Justice.

Oh Billie Lee, it's destiny that we meet again, here on this earthly plain.
I'll see all the worlds with you, but you'll have to help me through.
You are the straight and narrow path, and I'm the wayfayer.
Oh Billie Lee, we shall be free in the years to come, to help build the Promised Land.
We'll go where the day springs run, forever and live as one.
He is the object of our longing, and we're His creation.

We'll have children (Lua), of the Kingdom (Joshua).
They won't be torn by war, nor will they
Kill or hate, or hestitate, to love. Justice.

If you are from this period of time you had to have loved the melody, the words, and the vocals. At my age now, it brings tears to my eyes.

It truly a wonderful piece of music. It is easily played on guitar. you can get by with about 5 chords: G, C, F7, D, C7sus...not exact but close.

Used to hear this song when way back LATE 80's. I love the the melody though i don't really understand the message behind the song..In 2003 while traveling on a bus at dawn in a dreamlike state this song in the background made me high.:)

I will offer this gift of a song (thank you!)
by singing it for two friends who live in love in a state that doesn't yet support their right to marry. Their two lovely children will be touched as well.

If I recall correctly, Billie Lee was actually the name of Dash Crofts' wife. Does anyone know the relationship of Ruby Jean and Jim Seals? Was his marriage bi-racial.

Agree with other commentator. one of the truly great sounds of the 70's for sure and one of my best ever.

You'll note that the vocalist changes from the first verse and chorus (and I don't know which of the two is doing which) .... to the other of the two of them.

To me, and it may be that I am a born again Christian, it seems that the first chorus is man fighting to become holy and worrying about Earth for his sustenance.

The second verse (sung by the other) seems to be after the Lord has corrected humanity through the chapters in Revelations and they are finding themselves living in peace, whole and one with Him as is promised.

Very heavy song, but warming to the soul of one who knows the Lord.

Yes, Ruby Jean is the wife of Jimmy Seals. They have to be the kindest people I know, including their children and grandchildren. Very positive people, free of any negativity.
by Mary on 1/27/2018 10:30pm
This song is about loving Christ and finding peace !

It's 2:24 AM and I just awoke from a deep sleep humming Ruby Jean. I've listened to this song countless times and I hope it will always play in my heart and mind. Although I still don't grasp it's meaning the song has never failed to refresh my spirit. In today's turbulent world the song is a long cool drink of water as I near the end of a scorching journey . My deepest appreciation to the duo.

The song reflects the Promise Land, the Kingdom promised by Jehovah our God... no more hate, killing, pain, tears... very peaceful.
