DR WU Lyrics
Artist: Steely Dan
Album: Katy Lied
Katy tried
I was halfway crucified
I was on the other side
Of no tomorrow
You walked in
And my life began again
Just when I'd spent the last piaster
I could borrow
All night long
We would sing that stupid song
And every word we sang
I knew was true
Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy
Have you done all you can do
Are you with me Doctor
Don't seem right
I've been strung out here all night
I've been waiting for the taste
You said you'd bring to me
Biscayne Bay
Where the Cuban gentlemen sleep all day
I went searching for the song
You used to sing to me
Katy lies
You could see it in her eyes
But imagine my surprise
When I saw you
Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
She is lovely yes she's sly
And you're an ordinary guy
Has she finally got to you
Can you hear me Doctor

Comments/Interpretations
I've seen Steely Dan every time they've toured over the last 16 years and they've never performed Dr.Wu. Have Donald Fagen or Walter Becker ever said why?
From Wikipedia re: the album from which the song comes (Katie Lied)...
"Band members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were not happy with the album's sound quality due to an equipment malfunction with the dbx noise reduction system. They refused to listen to the completed album."
So maybe that has something to do with it. We saw them in A.C. a few years back and they did almost all of Aja, with MM sitting in! No complaints!
I just saw them front row in A.C. and every time i go quiet i would yell out play DR Wu and still no responce.. i was dissapointed 1 on my most fav songs........
You'd think they'd get over their dislike of the sound by now....35+ years
have seen them several times in Baltimore,D.C., Va. region and never heard dr. wu either. cant say i was disappointed though because thier shows are outstanding.
This song has some unusual lyrics to be sure. I never understood them and think you probably need to know something about DF's past to get the point. I loved the song the first time I heard it, mainly for its beautiful melodic flow, almost like a hymn. Then there was Phil Wood's solo which was beyond perfect. I would love to ask Woods what he felt when he played it. Beautiful. Donald knows how to pick soloists.
Dr. Wu is about being addicted to drugs. DF has done interviews where he talks about it. People using drugs tend to ascribe a personality to the substance, in this case Dr Wu...
