REELIN' IN THE YEARS Lyrics
Artist: Steely Dan
Album: Can't Buy A Thrill
Your everlasting summer
You can see it fading fast
So you grab a piece of something
That you think is gonna last
You wouldn't know a diamond
If you held it in your hand
The things you think are precious
I can't understand
CHORUS:
Are you reelin' in the years
Stowin' away the time
Are you gatherin' up the tears
Have you had enough of mine
You been tellin' me you're a genius
Since you were seventeen
In all the time I've known you
I still don't know what you mean
The weekend at the college
Didn't turn out like you planned
The things that pass for knowledge
I can't understand
CHORUS
I spend a lot of money
And I spent a lot of time
The trip we made in Hollywood
Is etched upon my mind
After all the things we've done and seen
You find another man
The things you think are useless
I can't understand
CHORUS

Comments/Interpretations
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS OF ALL TIME!!!
She's 40 but still acts like a teenager. Desperately trying not to get old. Keeps throwing away guys because she's afraid of commitment.
Mark T I think you got it
Forbid a passing but if I do I would love Steely Dan music to be a prelude, possibly from an alley or from a nearby bar. Could you understand?
Genius part I love it ! Sarcasm personified ....la la la lee
they say the chorus twice
These guys are genious. The lyrics, the song writing and of course Fagans voice certainly helps out. No other band has a mix of jazz, rock and blues in every song. The guitar solo in this song was so confusing that Clapton turned it down, Page turned it down to they finallly turned to the Skunker. Well he tokk it and it turned out to be a monster. Congrats Steely Dan you guys are the best.

Elliot Randall did the guitar solo on this recording. He listened to the tune once then played his solo. Fagan and Becker were blown away and happy with it but the recording engineer had neglected to turn on the machine. ER did it a second time and that's what you hear on this classic tune.
