Sara Lyrics
Artist: Stevie Nicks
Album: Sara
Wait a minute baby. . .
Stay with me awhile
Said you'd give me light
But you never told me about the fire
Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
And now it's gone
It doesn't matter anymore
When you build your house
Call me home
And he was just like a great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
I think I had met my match--he was singing
And undoing the laces
Undoing the laces
Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
And now it's gone
It doesn't matter anymore
When you build your house
Call me home
Hold on
The night is coming and the starling
flew for days
I'd stay home at night all the time
I'd go anywhere, anywhere
Ask me and I'm there because I care
Sara, you're the poet in my heart
Never change, never stop
And now it's gone
It doesn't matter what for
When you build your house
I'll come by
Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
And now it's gone
It doesn't matter anymore
When you build your house
Call me home
All I ever wanted
Was to know that you were dreaming
(There's a heartbeat
And it never really died)

Comments/Interpretations
Sara actually has more lyrics..... at the end Stevie sings ".. and the wind.. it became crazy.."
I was named after this song. They wanted to name me Stevie nicks Knisely.....thank god my gram threw a fit.
SHE TELLS MY HEART
I think she is saying Pyre, not fire. As in funeral pyre.??
I totally love this song. I believe sara is a reference to the good ancestor spirits that propell us to keep fighting in life and never give up. she makes reference to building a house and having a future. at that time we will be visited and our ancestors or spirits will rest with us...in a sea of love or happiness.
this song was actually written about her best friend Sara, who had an affair with mick fleetwood at the same time Stevie nicks was in a relationship with him.
I heard it was about her friend Sara and Mick Fleetwood, and it was also about her aborted baby with Don Henley, whom she wanted to name Sara. The end of the lyrics where she says "There's a heartbeat and it never really died" creeps me out.
This song is actually about her aborted baby. When she told the father Don Henley that she was pregnant she said she wasn't going to have it and HE WAS HAPPY. She had the abortion and was angry at him for not trying to talk her out of it. This song is for her dead baby Sara. WOMEN REGRET ABORTION :(
Cmon now.."undoin the laces"..definitely not about an aborted baby..plus mick wrote the song.
No, it is about Don Henley and her abortion. I read a GQ interview with Don Henley about it in the early 90's. He would not say for sure, but had heard same thing about song and title. Song is written by Stevie and undoing the laces could be a reference to Leather and Lace, that she also wrote. She said song could only be sung by four people and she and Don Henley are two. That is just my guess.
and BTW, I think it is BEYOND crappy that Don Henley would have come out and not only told the world of her abortion, but done so obivously without her permission and without consulting her to as to what the lyrics meant. How dare he! The dark wing is what she called Mick's car. So obiovusly Don does NOT know what many references are to, and it's very possible the 'heartbeat' was the life of their love together, hers and Micks, it will 'never really die' so we might all be speculating on her loving Mick Fleetwood, then, now, always and here Don Henley comes out and says it's about something as private as an abortion he may be 100% wrong. What a scum bag you are, Don! It's NOT your song! You want to divulge YOUR deepest thoughts on the matter fine, how dare you speculate about hers! dirt bag! Never listen to your songs or look at you the same way again!
Building a house was about settling down. She didnt want to settle down - she was a rock star. She toured, she had a crazy schedule, she indulged as artists do. She didn't want to be a mother. In interviews she said she was never meant to be a mother. She would not have been both -the passionate artists song writer and a mother. She couldn't be both . She chose. She gets to. She seems satisfied with her decision when I see her in interviews and they bring up no children.
This song is written for her grandmother....
I dont care what its about i just luv the song. stevie nicks-musical goddess
CORRECTION OF FIRST VERSE:
"Wait a minute baby, stay with me a while; said you'd give me light, but you never told me about the PYRE (not FIRE)"
There is a great live version of Sara with Tom Petty as well as other, rare live performances such as "Needles & Pins", "Insider" & "I Need to Know"
On another note I heard that "Rhiannon" is a Welsh legend saint for divorced-single moms. Anyone know bout that?
Cheers
Duh, Older and Wiser has it right...laces..undoing laces..get it? Clothing...don't make stuff up about people other people..get the facts right..
Awesome song. I would love to hear her do the other 9 Versus. I don't know exactly what the song is about but I believe it is about a love that was broke up not on her part but the guy who she was in love with and Sara is what she calls her self inside. One of my favorite songs of all time!
i saw an interview with stevie where she said the song was about her friend sara who fell in love with mick..who knows.....
Steve Nicks recently announced this song is in honor of the daughter she aborted in 1979. It goes to show that while many think abortion is just a choice, it is a choice that in so many cases stays with the mother forever. I hope all mothers who have chosen abortion will find peace.
To all the people who are pro-life, there are plenty of mothers who regret having their children! Other side of the coin. I love Stevie!!
I agree, it's "pyre" not fire.
Also, it's "within the WINDS of a storm", not "wings of a storm".
Read in her own words. Stevie admits Sara was the name of the baby she conceived with Don . Even though she used her right to choose, it was a life altering decision.
Besides Joe Walsh was the great love of her life. So suck it Don.
