Melissa Lyrics
Artist: The Allman Brothers Band
Album: Eat A Peach
Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast,
Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow, having fun.
But, back home he'll always run,
To sweet Melissa.
Mmmm-hmmm.
Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the gypsy's name,
And no one hears his lonely sighs,
There are no blankets where he lies.
Lord, in his deepest dreams the gypsy flies,
With sweet Melissa.
Mmmm-hmmm.
Again, the mornin's come.
Again, he's on the run.
A sunbeam's shinin through his hair.
Fear not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and gypsy roll on.
Roll on.
Crossroads, will you ever let him go? Lord, Lord.
Or will you hide the dead man's ghost?
Or will he lie, beneath the clay?
Or will his spirit float away?
But, I know that he won't stay,
Without Melissa.
Yes, I know that he won't stay, yeah,
Without Melissa.
Lord, Lord, it's all the same.
Mmmmm-hmmmmm.

What a beautifull song.
I absolutely love this song; not just because that is my name! :)
dear lord, i feel so much pain and deep sadness when i heard Greg sing Melissa at Jones Beach last night he really seemed to talk about his own deep and sad pain and thinking about death. I cried and was the most moved that I've been in a long, long time. Because to me the Allman Brothers have been perhsps one of my only friends for a long time......thank you so for singing what you did and how you did...Greg, if you ever read this my heart thanks you so.

This song has a haunting meaning to me and makes me sad and happy at the same time I love a girl named Melissa and this fits her but she is not mine , Greg sings this song with so much meaning and heartache
This beautiful song has an extremely deep meaning and is so heartfelt. It is sometimes hard to listen to it and not shed some tears.
i was named after this song!!
I've heard and read Gregg say that he had this song written completed except for the title. He was in the supermarket when he heard a woman call out for a little girl who ran to another isle..."Melissa" ! That's when he had a title for the song. Such an excellent tune...
