Candy-O Lyrics
Artist: The Cars
Album: Just What I Needed-Cars Antho
Candy-O, I need you
Sunday dress, ruby ring
Candy-O, I need you so
could you help me in?
purple hum, assorted cards
razor lights you'll bring
and all to prove you're on the move
and vanishing
Candy-O, I need you so
Candy-O, I need you so
edge of night, distract yourself
obstacles don't work
homogenize
decentralize
it's just a quirk
different ways to see you through
all the same in the end
peculiar star, a-that's who you are
do you have to win?
Candy-O, I need you so
Candy-O, I need you so
Candy-O, I need you so
(Candy-O)
Candy-O, I need you so
(Candy-O)

Comments/Interpretations
I believe that this song (along with Shoo Be Doo) acts as the lynchpin of the entire Candy-O album. For the first half of the album, the singer has been headed toward some sort of climactic breakdown. The total breakdown occurs in Shoo Be Doo, which is less of a song and more of a rant, and pops directly into Candy-O, which indicates the transformation of the singer from a wistful, longing lover to an aggressive, lustful and somewhat bitter man.
The question raised though, is, what is "Candy-O"? Is Candy-O an avatar for the woman he was longing for on the first half of the album? When he asks, "Do you have to win?" is that what gives him the ability to move on to "Nightspots"?
Or, does he succumb to his longing, and seek another avenue of escape? Is "Candy-O" a nickname for a type of drug? There are many different drugs out there which are all "different ways to see you though" but are "all the same in the end."
