White Man In Hammersmith Palais Lyrics

Artist: The Clash
Album: Clash

(Strummer/Jones)

Midnight to six man
For the first time from Jamaica
Dillinger and Leroy Smart
Delroy Wilson, your cool operator

Ken Boothe for UK pop reggae
With backing bands sound systems
And if they've got anything to say
There's many black ears here to listen

But it was Four Tops all night with encores from stage right
Charging from the bass knives to the treble
But onstage they ain't got no roots rock rebel
Onstage they ain't got no...roots rock rebel

Dress back jump back this is a bluebeat attack
'Cos it won't get you anywhere
Fooling with your guns
The British Army is waiting out there
An' it weighs fifteen hundred tons

White youth, black youth
Better find another solution
Why not phone up Robin Hood
And ask him for some wealth distribution

Punk rockers in the UK
They won't notice anyway
They're all too busy fighting
For a good place under the lighting

The new groups are not concerned
With what there is to be learned
They got Burton suits, ha you think it's funny
Turning rebellion into money

All over people changing their votes
Along with their overcoats
If Adolf Hitler flew in today
They'd send a limousine anyway

I'm the all night drug-prowling wolf
Who looks so sick in the sun
I'm the white man in the Palais
Just lookin' for fun

I'm only
Looking for fun

I was 17 when I discovered the Clash. Having the coolest band around at that tender age is almost more nostalgia than I can take sometimes. I always loved this song, but then I heard Complete Control and realized what a great song that was as well. How we need another Clash....
by Kurasuke on 8/1/2008 2:52pm
Yeah, its too bad that there is nobody around to make the amazing music of the Clash, or bands like 'em. RIP Joe
by Salem on 8/23/2008 8:30pm
I am a total Clash groupie. I know over 45 of their songs by heart; I cried when Joe died back in 2002. <3 Forever!

Just watched Rude Boy. Joe was so talented. Sometimes you have to just turn off the music, read his lyrics, to appreciate the depth of the man.

I saw The Clash in 1979 in Boston and was blown away, and was lucky enough to see them two more times in the next few years. Probably the best live performance band ever for me, and I saw lots of 'em in my punk rock days! "White Man" was always one of my faves. Boston was hip to The Clash from early on - when London Calling was released, Boston DJ Oedipus famously played the entire album non-stop on his radio show on WBCN, accurately predicting that it would go on to be regarded as a groundbreaking record. It's now considered by some to be the best album of the 1980s and one of the best rock albums of all time. Nuff said!
by Dave on 2/12/2009 9:34am
I was the archetypal Part-Time Punk, as brilliantly depicted by the Television Personalities (po-going in the bedroom but only when my mum goes out!). The early Clash were too rough and noisy for my liking, yet there was something about White Man that was just brilliant raw rock/reggae. l still have the single and have just done a vinyl-MP3 copy for the iPod. Punk for the new-age, eh? It's still a great song.

Best song by the only band that matters. :)
by zach on 3/18/2009 7:21pm

by breakya on 10/14/2009 6:33am
Well having discovered the Clash at 16 yrs, From Here To Eternity being my first Clash album, always loving this song, all I have to say the world lost a great great man. Joe Strummer was a person (not idealizing) who had a big heart and a conscious intelligent mind to go with it. Memory of him will never die, just the pain and the occasional tear in all of us who got to know him through his non less than epic music. RIP Joe Strummer.
by ige2 on 12/7/2009 4:36am
i knew and love the clash since i was 10 fucking years old

by michael on 2/4/2010 7:33pm
saw them live like 8 times. this is their best song, and one of the best by ANY band...period. There will never be another Clash. You are sorely missed Joe Strummer.
by albert hoffman on 3/10/2010 8:46pm
we cant stop marching!
by Thisonegoesouttoradioland on 7/13/2010 12:53am
All embraced, I think that the only way to respect the clash is to carry the ideology of carrying the fucking torch while not living in the big shadow of a humble hero. We miss ya Joe
by theonlybandthatmatters on 7/31/2010 6:43am
Best song from the best band,so many memories
RIP Joe
by Woody Woodham on 10/21/2010 9:48pm
You fools... I think Mick Jones had a little more to do with this song than Joe did... besides, no one here seems to grasp any political significance to a crass song about selling out.
by James Mags on 12/16/2010 7:25am
What!? what are you even talking about dude, have you ever even listened to the CLASH in your life? this song has so much more in it than that...u prolly didnt even read the lyrics. and yes joe wrote it. so eat that!!
by Ha on 12/24/2010 6:21am
i reckon even tho 1 of them is dead the rest of them are still bloody awesome and are no way what so eva sell outs (correct me if i'm wrong)
by dc on 1/30/2011 7:12pm
one of the best songs ever
by Normancha on 2/4/2011 5:14pm
Back in 1982,I phoned Joe and asked him why the British army weighs 1500 tonnes and you would not believe what he told me. I will say it has nothing to do with cheesy reggae stage shows or the National Front.
by carlo on 2/12/2011 9:25pm
best song by the best band ever
by Emmanuel on 3/15/2011 1:50pm
It is one of the best songs ever written, it does not matter that it is in english, you can feel it in any speak.
by Paul on 3/25/2011 12:32am
lyrics work for today times in the United States.
by Jimmy Jones on 3/26/2011 3:53pm
I am having this song played at my funeral (whenever that maybe) - mainly because its my favourite ever track but also because i am a drug prowling wolf and i dont look too good in the sun! And the grim truth is that if Colonel Gaddafi flew in today we would send a limousine anyway (such is the immigration problem in this country - fuck off home the lot of you!!!) Joe hope things are better up there . . .
by Dan on 9/20/2011 5:51am
I don't think Joe would have wanted everyone to stop and just sit there mourning - remember his music, but most importantly, carry on what he stood for. He was the most pro-immigration, anti-racsist, socially just person you could ever read about.
Let us all carry on Joe's spirit.
by Jurgen on 9/27/2011 11:25am
Amen to that Dan!
by OllyStubbs on 9/29/2011 7:45pm
Seconded Jurgen. Shame drug-prowling Jimmy hasn't worked out the root message of Joe. Maybe an Ian Stuart song would be more fitting at his funeral.
by Joe on 11/29/2011 9:34pm
I remember listening to "White Man In Hammersmith Palais" being made fun of while the other whankers were listening to Journey and Forigner.
by El Caminante on 3/6/2012 7:25pm
The only band that matters
by DeadElvis on 4/20/2012 4:05pm
Personally have this listed as the greatest song of all time! Great band with great lyrics the likes of which have not been repeated. Always makes me laugh when people crap on about bands like U2 as being so awesome..... The Clash were inspirational, socially aware and knew how to craft a song. Joe lives on through his songs!
by ALLAN on 6/5/2012 8:38am
The best band ever THE CLASH PURE CLASS THEN NOW AND ALWAYS
by RootsRockRebel on 6/25/2012 5:53am

the Clash DID turn rebellion into money, and to their credit,in a VERY cool and deserving way.Hello Paul !
by gregg_h on 11/13/2012 5:43pm
Its "Midnight to Six" Band-you can look them up. They made albums and stuff.
by Cole on 9/7/2013 10:15pm
Classic
by Cranky on 12/7/2013 9:25pm
"Best song ever"??? You need to get out more.
by Rascal on 2/3/2014 7:01am
FYI, the phrase, 'rebellion into money' is a paraphrase of 'Revolt Into Style', the title of an early work of pop semiology by George Melly that describes the way new pop cults become absorbed into the mainstream when marketeers get involved.
by whiteman on 4/25/2014 2:18am
If Adolf Hitler flew in today... They'd send a limousine anyway!!
by JOACHIM on 5/30/2014 2:14pm
BEST SONG EVAH!!!!!!!!!
by beggsy on 9/4/2016 11:45am
I never tire of the best band ever, they are timeless, here we are 40 years later and still the most talented timeless music, just listen to the music and the lyrics, how i wish we didn't age and die, R.I.P Joe, legend, you bring tears to my eyes
