Ebony Eyes Lyrics

Artist: The Everly Brothers
Album: Ebony Eyes

On a weekend pass I wouldn't have had time
To get home and marry that baby of mine
So I went to the chaplain and he authorized
Me to send for my ebony eyes

My ebony eyes was coming to me
From out of the skies on Flight 1203
In an hour or two I would whisper "I do"
To my beautiful ebony eyes

SPOKEN
The plane was way overdue so I went inside to the airlines desk and I said "Sir, I
wonder why 1203 is so late?" He said "Aww, they probably took off late or they
may have run into some turbulent weather and had to alter their course." I went
back outside and I waited at the gate and I watched the beacon light from the
control tower as it whipped through the dark ebony skies as if it were searching for
(my ebony eyes.) And then came the announcement over the loudspeaker-
"Would those having relatives or friends on flight number 1203 please report to the
chapel across the street at once."

Then I felt a burning break deep inside
And I knew the heavenly ebony skies
Had taken my life's most wonderful prize
My beautiful ebony eyes

If I ever get to heaven I'll bet
The first angel I'll recognize
She'll smile at me and I know she will be
My beautiful ebony eyes

I joined the army in 1960 so was in the army when this song came out . It could have been my girl flying to marry me in North Africa and being killed on her way to me. So this song has always had a special meaning for me.I'm still married to the same girl now 2008

The Everly Brothers have been among my favourites eversince I was a teenager — which is quite a long time ago! Their close harmonies are definitely among the very best I have ever heard and are alomost unparalleled (I also enjoy the Beach Boys' and the Louvin Brothers' close harmonies). "Ebony Eyes" is one of the most dramatic and poignant songs I've ever heard. The impressive number of singers having been killed in air crashes and the ever increasing number of crashes all contribute to make this song an evergreen. Whenever I listen to this song, I can't help feel a shiver go down my spine during the spoken section. The one doing it (be it Don or Phil)so artistically puts all his emotions in it while the other keeps "oo-oo-ing" in the background. Finally the song climaxes with the recognition of "Ebony Eyes" as the "first angel" — an ending that makes the song transcend time and space. Wonderful lyrics for a wonderful melody.

Again and again even after the recent plane crash on Dana Air in Nigeria - Everly Brothers, you are just in the present when in actual fact this was done years back. What a very beautiful song dedicated to those gentle souls we just lost. This is one of the best songs for me.
