Lightning Express Lyrics

Artist: The Everly Brothers
Album: Songs Our Daddy Taught Us [Ace]

The lightning express from the depot so grand
Had started out on its way
All of the passengers that were on board
Seemed to be happy and gay
But one little boy who sat by himself
Was reading a letter he had
You could plainly tell by the look on his face
That the contents of it made him sad

The stern old conductor then started his round
Taking tickets from everyone there
And finally reaching the sad little boy
He gruffly demanded his fare
"I have no ticket" the boy then replied
"But I'll pay you back someday"
"Then I'll put you off at the next stop we make"
But he stopped when he heard the boy say

"Please Mr. Conductor
Don't put me off of this train
The best friend I have in this world sir
Is waiting for me in pain
Expecting to die any moment sir
And may not live through the day
I wanna reach home and kiss mother goodbye
Before God takes her away"

A girl sitting near was heard to exclaim
"If you put him off, it's a shame"
Taking his hand, a collection she made
The boy's way was paid on the train
"I'm obliged to you miss for your kindness to me"
"You're welcome," she said, never fear
Each time the conductor would pass through the car
The boy's words would ring in his ear

"Please Mr. Conductor
Don't put me off of this train
The best friend I have in this world sir
Is waiting for me in pain
Expecting to die any moment sir
And may not live through the day
I wanna reach home and kiss mother goodbye
Before God takes her away"

This lyric has touch my deepest heart. The boy who want to visit his best friend may be for the last time, the conductor who on duty and the girl in other side who has great sense of humanity.

I'm in my 40's and this is the first time I have actually seen the lyrics in print. It's the song that defines my childhood, especially before the age of 10. My mother loved the Everley brothers and this is one song she played over and over again, maybe because she missed her own mother, my granny, as we lived on the other side of the world. I remember dancing with her and singing along.

I'm going to call my mum right now and tell her how much I love her.

I loved the song. I forgot the lyrics though I can remember some of it. I knew the lyrics were very touching and could be very meaningful to many of us one day. I search the net and managed to get the full lyrics from this site. As I read the lyrics, tears flow in my eyes.

i love this song,it brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it.I live in the u.s.My mom lived in europe and in 2001 i got a call that my mom had a stroke.I left for europe right away & like the lyrics in this song didn't know if i will get the chance to say goodbye not knowing if she will still be alive by the time i arrive there.Well i did get the chance to say goodbye & I love you one more time even though she could not speak i saw tears coming down her cheek,as soon as she saw me.This song reminds me a lot of that long trip i made hoping to find my mother alive just to at least tell her that i loved her one more time.I love this song & love to hear it over & over again.

My precious mum Ethel would sing this song in her beautiful tenor voice when I was a small boy..I heard her sing it to her grand children...now mum has gone HOME (18 April 2009 at the age of 89) leaving me in tears every time I play this song and sing along. Thank God for beautiful mothers - I miss my mum even though I have children of my own now.

I have always liked and loved Don & Phil. The Lightning Express is truly a touching song that clearly expresses the relationship and the love between the mother and the son. I believe these days they don't write songs like this anymore.

This is the song I heard my cousin
Dr. Lennie George Kurian Singing
While he was a primary School boy. I made him sing it repeatedly when ever I met him. After he became a man he visited me only once. I made him sing it over again and again. Now both of us are in different continents. It is a long time since I have seen him. Many many years! But I always think howmay
mothers and chilren are fortunate to see each other at their death bed? If they can, they are really saints!
