ALEX CHILTON Lyrics
Artist: The Replacements
Album: Pleased To Meet Me
If he was from Venus, would he feed us with a spoon?
If he was from Mars, wouldn't that be cool?
Standing right on campus, would he stamp us in a file?
Hangin' down in Memphis all the while.
(chorus:)
Children by the million sing for Alex Chilton when he comes 'round
They sing "I'm in love. What's that song?
I'm in love with that song."
Cerebral rape and pillage in a village of his choice.
Invisible man who can sing in a visible voice.
Feeling like a hundred bucks, exchanging good lucks face to face.
Checkin' his stash by the trash at St. Mark's place.
(chorus)
I never travel far, without a little Big Star
Runnin' 'round the house, Mickey Mouse and the Tarot cards.
Falling asleep with a flop pop video on.
If he was from Venus, would he meet us on the moon?
If he died in Memphis, then that'd be cool, babe.
(chorus)

Comments/Interpretations
not bad. id put it on a playlist.
on and on and on and on and on .. which side are you on?
which side are you on? Geez, I've been listening to this song since I was about 10 (I'm 30 now) and I could never understand "which side are you on?" HAHAHAHAHA! "Sakajawa" was what I always sang.
:)
the left! ... but seriously, I always figured he was talking about hearing himself on local radio stations only
I love this song. It's on Rock Band 2!
I love this song. It's about some other bloke named Alex Chilton obviously but he was the singer for two big indie cult bands apparently, so says Rock Band 2 at least which is where I first heard it.
I LOVE THIS SONG!
Singer for(mentioned in song) Big Star...band from Memphis. Drummer is Jody mgr of Ardent studios in Memphis. Big Star wrote the theme used on "That 70's Show" dont say Cheap Trick or you will lose the bet. For not being commercially a success they influenced a lot of musicians. All the girls loved Alex. They had a reunion at Beale St Music fest in 2008...
Oh GEESH! The whole point of the song is how great Big Star is. Alex Chilton was the singer/songwriter for Big Star. Sad that the tribute song didn't have the effect Mr. Westerberg intended.
i love this song
I'm in love
with that song
Maybe the best rock-song of the 80īs! Itīs madness, madness is what it is!
And the best thing about The Replacements is that kids discover them more and more each year. Cos thatīs whatīs they like, about growing up.
Cheeeeeeeeers
Yeah, growing up means more of these guys, which is awesome!
I mean, who ever said that "The Crud Hits the Fans" wasn't a great album name? No one, that's who!
I'm in love. with that song :)
How this song takes me back to the attic bedroom my sister and I shared! I'm in love w/ THIS song. I love it so much, I almost cry a little every time I hear it. BEST SONG EVER!
Actually this song is about Arthur Lee HAHAHAHA! Just kidding. Don't be disheartened or dismayed if you don't know who that is - he led another cult band called Love (from the 60s).
Cult Band? Just heark Rocy Erickson is playing halloween Night!!!
I noticed that no one has mentioned that Alex Chilton was the lead singer for the Box Tops. The Letter, Cry like a baby, soul Deep and others that escape me right now. He was like 17 years old when he recorded those songs.....Incredible!
its a shame Westerberg never gets enough credit for his work hope hes doing well
When The Chorus Is Sung the lat time it's a bit different.
Cool song. Catches me everytime.
Always thought Paul was saying "so we will rape and pillage instead of cerebral rape and pillage. Also sounds like he says "falling asleep with a pop-up video on- like the ones they had on Vh-1 years ago.
Always thought the line in the bridge was " . . . travel far/without 'The Letter' or 'Big Star'". As someone mentioned, 'The Letter' was a big hit for the Box Tops, Chilton's band before Big Star, and I think that's what Westerberg has to be saying.
the boxtops stuff was forced on him by the producers.
I think it's "fop pop video"
RIP Alex
well, he died in new orleans, not memphis. but still cool.
Wish I got to see Alex live. These lyrics are perfect, "I'm in love with that song, what's that song!"
I'm in love with that song.
Also was the Singer for the Box tops and "give me a Ticket for an Airoplane ain't got time to take a fast train" RIP Alex Chilton your career is legitimately dead, and I too Love that Song
I'm pretty sure Paul was trying to sing "box tops video" but it didn't come out that way, and just stayed. Children by the millions indeed. RIP Alex :(
REST IN PEACE, ALEX!! XOXOX
My all time favorite Replacements song, and they've got so many great ones. Paul wrote a nice posthumous tribute to Alex in the "Opinion" section of today's NY Times, check it out online, well worth reading.
I believe the chorus is "children by the millions WAIT for Alex Chilton to come around" not SING...Also, I always thought the second line of the last verse was "falling asleep with a pop-rock video on" meaning the crappy top-40 bubble gum so-called "rock" that Paul hated.
Agree with Red Pete's lyric assessment.
Also, I flopped between thinking it was as shown above and "I never travel far/Without The Letter, Big Star". Either works.
I always thought the chorus was "Children by the million SCREAM for Alex Chilton..." It changes to "wait" in the last chorus.
re-listening, i think it's definitely "fop pop", like andy said, which is essentially a British term for like... slightly metrosexual bands. i've always thought of Hugh Grant as rather foppish. anyway, examples of bands that are described by the term "fop pop" on google include Keane, Augustine, The Poppycocks, Vaganza, and The Decemberists, oddly enough.
Ive hear -that song- a thousand upon thousand times, and each time it thunders !
This is my favorite rock song.period.
Every children by the million should own
A copy of "pleased to meet me." you too will love this song.
Checkin' the Cashbox charts just ain't my place.
Fallin' asleep with a pop rock video on.
We will rape a pillage in the village of his choice
I never traveled far without a little Big Star.
Children by the millions wait for Alxe Chilton when he comes 'round
The line is definitely, "I never travel far, without a little Big Star". In fact, Paul changed the line on a "recent" tour to,".....without a little G N R" to mock Tommy's joining of Guns & Roses.
Last night on the Tonight show Westerberg changed the lyrics to "if he died in New Orleans that'd be cool.
song still sounds as fresh as it did in '87. Greatest band that never was...
It's definitely "fop pop" which is much better than "flop pop," since men in videos were especially foppish in the 1980s. And "flop pop" doesn't make much sense. A pop video that's a flop? Why is it on TV then?
