PANIC Lyrics
Artist: The Smiths
Album: BEST...1
Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again ?
The Leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the Grasmere
But Honey Pie, you're not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's Panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself
Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
IT SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play
On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down
Provincial towns you jog 'round
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ

A simple question.............What are we supposed to do with the DJ?
Hang him!
yeah! hang everybody and the DJ
hang him and burn him down
and piss on him
Its about Stve Wright...factoid
So it's telling us we should hang Steve Wright, burn him down then pee on him?
:D
This would be one of my favourite Smiths songs, behind 'There is a light that never goes out' and 'The last of the famous international playboys.'
Ha ha ha! What great website. I agree, hang him, piss on him, then throw coins at his eyes.
I think this song has something to do with The Hacienda and the first time a crowd cheered a dj there, it was like the first rave party ever, theirs a movie 24 hour party people
Yeah, that's the right way to stop the anoying stuff playing guys!
this song is where panic at the disco get there name from yeah?
oui, panic did adopt their name from this song and quite rightly so it's quality :D x
this song is where panic at the disco get there name from yeah? - RAAAYT.
this isn't where they got it. they got it from a band called name taken.
LORA!!! I'm famous!!!
love ya
;)
Colgarlo!!!
kill a disco!
too much work to hang em all...
grab a beer and have a bbq!
cmon boys hang all the blesse Dj´s!!
It says nothing to me about my life. Indeed.
a song of angst. a sign of the times. completely irrelevant to me but i appreciate the way they make music and how it reflects the lives the musicians lived at that time.
this is where panic at the disco got their name right?
I LOVE the SMITHS. hang the dj hang the dj hand the dj. i also love the song "stop me if you think you've heard this one before" i played that about 20 times today.
He's a witch!
no it isn't the song panic at the disco got their name from. they thought about the name "burn down the disco". but then they settled on "panic at the disco". a line from the song "panic" by name taken.
This isnt the song Panic at the Disco got their name from, Panic at the Disco S*cks ass!!!
Morrissey your still the best!
I'm 47 and was there in the 80's digging The Smiths at that time. They still hold up after all these years....chao!
I think we should hang the DJ.
This song is actually about Margaret Thatcher's tory britain. Thr DJ is the PM (thatcher) and the disco is the (political) Party, the tory party
Luv this song so much!!
Luv this song so much!!
I ove it. so much ill totally olly
Fat Whore I think I love you x
One of my faves from the 80's. Classic SMITHS
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG THE DJ!
Love This song!!
there are statements (even from the smiths) that this song was composed after steve wrights announcement of chernobyl catastrophy and following up with a WHAM song.
However this might only be one interpretion since the text can clearly be understood as hanging the DJ (queen) and burn down the disco (Buckingham palace). This is supported by the style of the video (flames in front of B. palace and royal crown). Also Thatcherism is criticized by showing graffity concerning LDDC.
As this is the single following up the "queen is dead" album and the public discussion of it afterwards - the Steve Wright incident might have come handy as an excuse.
hi sam, way to fill a thread with a bucket of BORRRRING!
yawn you're stating Comments/ I'm /Interpretations, so what. however good song.
give him a good hiding!
Well, nice info Sam : D
cheers sam, good fella
este tema es una masa
Nice info sam!
I love this song... as wel las many other smiths songs...
Glad i'm not a deejay though
I always heard
"Hang the present DJ" not "blessed". There is clearly a vocalized "e" after the "s", which wouldn't occur if the lyrics really said "blessed".
I've never heard something more relevant to common times! "Burn down the disco, hang the blessed DJ, Because the music that they concstantly play, It says nothing to me about my life". It's just pure and utter genius! It's so realevant to all that tripe everybody listens to now-a-days! Morrissey's a fucking genius!
@Gunnar:
"Bless-ed" (2 syllables) = adjective.
"Blest" (1 syllable) = verb.
Morrissey is using the adjective here (the blessed DJ), not the verb. so that's why it sounds like the syllable after the "s" is vocalized, because it is, but it's not "present".
Hang the english techer with the dj !!!
Ya ya i really wanna the hung it
Oh, blessed Queen I love this Band. I can't say how much this band helped me through my life. With all the bullocks that life throws at us we can always remember that The Smiths were there!
Hang the freakin' DJ
hang me too
I should be hung after butchering this song in karaoke last night
Hang every1
bless us morrissey
Deserve it. I think I helped you through your exams ... Poetry for the Hoi polloi
I'm 44 and love it ... Always have.
If God were a neurotic Englishman, he would be Morrissey.
well there is now panic on the streets of london and as of today panic on the streets of birmingham i live in humberside so could do without a riot please
wow so its happening for real now! morriseys a pleb but hes predicted the future in song. psyche!
This song is so actual...
This track is a social commentary about the disenfranchisement of vast swathes of the population.
The Disco would be the political establishment, and the DJ would be our Prime Minister.
Indeed, hang the DJ and burn down the disco.... The song that they constantly play says nothing to me about my life.
So appropriate right now. Hang the DJ!
I love when a decades old song explains a contemporary moment perfectly. Hang the bankers hang the bankers HANG THE BANKERS!
so if this song predicted the future (that being now) which DJ is gonna hang?
It's all happening right now... will we come to the point to actually hang the DJ (prime minister) and burn down the disco (the establishment) ??
The first verse just became my fb status. So appropriate right now. Will life ever be sane again?
Hang the bankers! They're such wankers!
Morrissey is just a fucking visionary poet... love him
I think DJ might just stand for "Dow Jones"
visionary.....mm
Lo maximo the smithsss!!!!!...mui buenas canciones!!!...
if this song has anything to do with panic! at the disco then every member of this band and should be shot. panic are a million times better than these people who cant write for shit.
Like te song smiths I lreakly liked it make many songs for your fans and I'm one
Morrissey = musical genius
HANG THE DJ – I SAID: HANG THE DJ!!!
Hang the DJ
don't forget to poop on the dj's forehead after you're done torturing him with pee and pocketchange
fist the dj
Morrissey = self absorbed PRATT
Hang him high.. Hang em all high.
Morrisey and the Smiths have been an essential completion during the first steps of my language learning...I used to sing this song and so on to learn to speak more quickly with local people and to grasp at once. After buying a book on Morrisey here directly by the writer-seller... i 've tested his lyrics in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Dublin, Cork. I've missed Leeds, New Castle, Dundee...Anyway that day in London here we are in a pub -two ladies- we met an irish woman and an english man. They came from a close town, they had been married for 6 years and they used to go for shopping in London - local fancy dresses - before to go to the urban AntiChrist..... And then? Panic! Hang the dj!!!
ballerina, if you used the smiths to learn english, then you are the most awesome person in the world in any language.
I think Morrisey is one fucking boring bastard ....but he can't half pen a tune. Johnny Marr on the other hand fucking GENIUS !!!!
It's all about the boots'n Cats and asphixiated DJs....
so it would appear!!!!!!!!!!
i think morrissey is arrogant but he CAN be ;p he's awesome;p so his arrogance is forgiven ;)
I think the lyrics are just a combination of two half-finished lyrics: one song about riots, the other about Morrissey's hatred of Techno music. Sort of an 80s Bohemian Rhapsody if you catch my drift...
Anyway, brilliant stuff!
the first time i found this song out, i was learning about 'Jack the Ripper' murders in 1888, in London. this weird person started singing this song when we were learning about 'Jacky'. i found that the song fit the moment very oddly. i got chills when the weirdo stoped singing the song when the teacher gave him a detention. i looked up the song, and found that i liked it, in a scary way.
It's about jimmy savile's national noncing tour
It makes a lot more sense now that we all know about how VILE Sa-vile was.
What did morrisey know about the dj?
Are they all nonces?
Yeah, Panic! got their name from this song, so go Smiths and go Panic!
Savile

Hang the DJ? Does the UK have crappy DJs? LOL! Who controls what is played on the radio, the DJ? Or the radio executives/consultants?
In the U.S., the crappy radio is NOT the fault of the DJ - It is the fault of radio executives that will not let the DJ be creative, and hamstrings their choices, to play the same bullshit, and ignore creative indie talent! That's why many great American bands have to go to the UK & become famous first, then HOPE their success will follow them back home!
Hang the Radio Execs!
Buzzed to this song first time around.
It's still 'da bomb' even now, Morrisey is the lyrical mastermind of that age
Hank the dj
This is a song about radio and the meaningless, vacuous, pop trash that gets all the airplay. There was no room for art and independent music with heart.
The song is not about Thatcher, the Queen, rising up against politicians, or Buckingham Palace.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. "The music that they constantly play, says nothing to me about my life."
CrazyCosmicChad, if you have paid any attention, you will know Morrissey has always been a social commentator.
