Don't Let's Start Lyrics

Artist: They Might Be Giants
Album: Then-The Earlier Years

Don't don't don't let's start
This is the worst part
Could believe for all the world
That you're my precious little girl
But don't don't don't let's start
I've got a weak heart
And I don't get around how you get around

When you are alone you are the cat, you are the phone
You are an animal
The words I'm singing now
Mean nothing more than meow to an animal
Wake up and smell the cat food in your bank account
But don't try to stop the tail that wags the hound

D, world destruction
Over and overture
N, do I need
Apostrophe T, need this torture?

Don't don't don't let's start
This is the worst part
Could believe for all the world
That you're my precious little girl
But don't don't don't let's start
I've got a weak heart
And I don't get around how you get around

No one in the world ever gets what they want and that is beautiful
Everybody dies frustrated and sad and that is beautiful
They want what they're not and I wish they would stop saying,
Deputy dog dog a ding dang depadepa
Deputy dog dog a ding dang depadepa

D, world destruction
Over and overture
N, do I need
Apostrophe T, need this torture?

Don't don't don't let's start
This is the worst part
Could believe for all the world
That you're my precious little girl
But don't don't don't let's start
I've got a weak heart
And I don't get around how you get around

I don't want to live in this world anymore
I don't want to live in this world

Don't don't don't let's start
This is the worst part
Could believe for all the world
That you're my precious little girl
But don't don't don't let's start
I've got a weak heart
And I don't get around how you get around

This is a song about a guy who is fascinated by a prostitute. First, he compares her to an animal, then he relates her to how the world is terrible.
by tmbg on 11/2/2008 12:46am
lyrics are wrong

I could listen to this song, "'Til My Head Falls Off."
by dwmitch on 6/28/2009 12:05pm
In reply to emalinechildren, I'm not sure they were ever trying to be a novelty group. They seem to be on the route Ray Stevens took, trying to be serious musicians but considered comedic.

The major difference I can see is that Ray Stevens just went with the image and ran with it while TMBG decided to eschew the comedy classification and stuck with alternative.
by DAN on 7/26/2009 9:07pm
this song is not about a prostitute. its simply about a guy in love with a girl who is more flighty than he is and is used to moving on from relationship to relationship.

DUH
by Sam on 10/25/2009 5:34am
Clearly, it's about breaking into a saftey deposit box or a bank, and replacing the money with cat food.

o wate.
by hahaha on 10/30/2009 6:40am
Sam I love it.
by Big Tony on 10/30/2009 8:43am
I think Dan @ 20090726 is dead on about what the song's about.
by Mikel Wade on 6/4/2010 8:56am
I saw them in 1990 live in San Diego, CA and have the t shirt to prove it
by el baron on 9/3/2010 6:12am
it's definitely about a guy who realizes the girl he likes just hurts him emotionally by being who she is.
they probably had a brief relationship that ended up hurting him more than it pleased either one of them.
the song itself seems to capture his realization that the relationship is doomed.
by TMBG LUVA on 9/29/2010 5:24pm

Yes, LeakyFlask number 1 wins the game!!
by zombie survivor on 7/6/2011 5:28am
It is truly a profound song. None of u would have realized that its about a guy surviving a zombie apocolypse and doesn't want to talk to any of his friends while they are zombified because it makes him too emotional. Plus, they ate his favorite cat. In the end, though, he has to slowly succumb to that fate. OBVIOUSLY!!! ;)
by Destine Roar on 10/29/2011 10:12pm
I love this song. Thank you They Might Be Giants for making the song.

by mrbig356@sbcglobal.net on 2/3/2012 3:53pm
This song is 100% about the START nuclear arms agreement/ initiative. No question about it.
by InsertNameHere on 3/12/2012 12:16am
I always thought this song was about the relationship between father and daughter, but what do I know??
by Danno on 6/20/2012 12:27pm
The words in this song make absolutely no sense at all and that is beautiful. :o)
by Phil on 8/23/2012 3:08pm
I think it's about a father and an unreasonable teenaged daughter. The dad wants her to calm down and all she wants to do is rebel against him. The refrain is him trying to calm her down and the rest is her rebeling by pointing out lifes strangeness.
by A BOMB on 9/10/2012 10:31am
Saw the girl I love in the arms of a different man for the five hundredth. I totally did not want to live on Earth anymore. I would be depressed but this song snapped me right out of it. BEST SONG EVER.
by Peaceout on 10/21/2012 1:37am

by Blue Canary on 5/6/2013 11:47am
TMBG's best know song, but not the funniest. They call me Doctor Worm when I'm not Building a Birdhouse.
by D14NANC on 10/1/2013 7:08pm
YOU EITHER SPEAK TMBG OR IT SOUNDS LIKE A BROKEN RECORD
by Ben on 1/13/2014 10:24pm
It's about a guy who fell in love with a girl who insists he leave his family for her. She's done it before and thinks it should either be no problem for him, or that he's merely toying with her, putting him on the spot by making him think about it.
by DON'T on 3/1/2014 5:15pm
D world destruction,
Over and overture,
N do I need
Apostrophe T need this torture?
by PNG on 5/15/2014 6:50am
But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are too strong for us. So they gave to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people we saw in it are men of great size. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight. - Numbers 13:31-33 (in other words, don't let's start, they might be giants.)
