The End of the Tour Lyrics

Artist: They Might Be Giants
Album: John Henry

There's a girl with a crown and a scepter
Who's on WLSD
And she says that the scene isn't what it's been
And she's thinking of going home
That it's old and it's totally over now
And it's old and it's over, it's over now
And it's over, it's over, it's over now
I can see myself

At the end of the tour
When the road disappears
If there's any more people around
When the tour runs aground
And if you're still around
Then we'll meet at the end of the tour
The engagements are booked through the end of the world
So we'll meet at the end of the tour

Never to part since the day we met
Out on Interstate 91
I was bent metal you were a flaming wreck
When we kissed at the overpass
I was sailing along with the people
Driving themselves to distraction inside me
Then came a knock on the door which was odd
And the picture abruptly changed

At the end of the tour
When the road disappears
If there's any more people around
When the tour runs aground
And if you're still around
Then we'll meet at the end of the tour
The engagements are booked through the end of the world
So we'll meet at the end of the tour

This was the vehicle these were the people
You opened the door and expelled all the people
This was the vehicle these were the people
You opened the door and expelled all the people
This was the vehicle these were the people
You let them go

At the end of the tour
When the road disappears
If there's any more people around
When the tour runs aground
And if you're still around
Then we'll meet at the end of the tour
The engagements are booked through the end of the world
So we'll meet at the end of the tour
And we're never gonna tour again
No, we're never gonna tour again

This song has become so infectious to me over the past few weeks. I love it!

this song is about death in a car accident...

the end of the tour...
the road disappears...

Never to part since the day we met
Out on Interstate 91..
I was bent metal you were a flaming wreck..
When we kissed at the overpass..
I was sailing along with the people..
Driving themselves to distraction inside me..
Then came a knock on the door which was odd..
And the picture abruptly changed...

I like this song! It seems like there was a car crash in the song and they died...like what Todd Smith said.

I'm not so sure about the car wreck angle but I'm positive that this is referencing Paul Simon's American Tune. Paul Simon's song is about how he believes America has gone down the wrong path.

"And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea"

The girl with a crown and a scepter is pretty clearly the Statue of Liberty and is leaving in both songs. Also from Paul Simon:

"Still, when I think of the road
we're traveling on
I wonder what went wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what went wrong"

which is in keeping with:

"At the end of the tour
When the road disappears"

There is more to the song than just an homage to American Tune but that is a large part of it.

Ammonia Man, either you read that somewhere or you are on crack. I'm thinking the latter.
