Mary Janes Last Dance Lyrics
Artist: Tom Petty
She grew up in an Indiana town,
Had a good-lookin' mama who never was around.
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on them Indiana nights.
Well, she moved down here at the age of eighteen.
She blew the boys away, was more than they'd seen.
I was introduced and we both started groovin'.
I said, "I dig you baby, but I got to keep movin' on.
Keep movin' on."
Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again.
Well, I don't know, but I've been told,
You never slow down, you never grow old.
I'm tired of screwin' up, tired of going down,
Tired of myself, tired of this town.
Oh, my, my. Oh, hell, yes.
Honey, put on that party dress.
Buy me a drink, sing me a song.
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long.
Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again.
There's pigeons down on Market Square.
She's standin' in her underwear,
Lookin' down from a hotel room.
Nightfall will be comin' soon.
Oh, my, my. Oh, hell, yes.
You got to put on that party dress.
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone.
I hit my last number and walked to the road.
Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again.

its about weed

drue ur an idiot..the name of the song is MARY JANE...duhzz..
he plays it off as it was a girl....
but he's talkin about weed
yes because weed has a "good lookin mama". and weed wears underwear. BECAUSE DRUGS TOTALLY WEAR CLOTHES AND GET HOTEL ROOMS.
dumbfucks. i like it because its talks about indiana (:
dudes sounds like the song is almost more about a drifter like keepin one step ahead of the reaper man, like time is short. dude in the song is always on the move right. and this chick is like a landmark maybe like a spot to tell the story from two sides.
i think it's about a girl who has been through a troubled childhood & she smokes weed. mary jane is referring to both the girl and marijuana.
that's just my interpretation. makes sense to me.
+ love this song.
wow you guys have no concept for metaphor and analogies... the song is most obviously about weed... jus topen your mind and look at it from that angle "she grew up tall and she grew up right"
"last dance with mary jane, one more time to kill the pain"
this is as much about drugs as hotel califronia
oh, my, my. oh hell, yes!!!!!!!!!!
Drugs, drugs and drugs...
you certainly have a point.Every human artist at some point in his carrier needs to satisfy your thirst for poetic dope songs
Fantastic song...so many years and still livin' ... I hope that will last much more.
Tom Petty's fan from Serbia
I love this song!
yeah, "J" is absolutely right when he says it is clearly about weed. Maybe you have to be a pothead to catch all the inuendos. Did I spell that right? Nice choice of letter usage for your code name as well. It fits.
i agree with the moron that put a period for a name, it's deffinately about both, i like the song cus the girl means the world to him and he means nothing to her
Well, Tom Petty has been known to write songs about drugs. Just because the song says something about underwear and hotels doesn't mean a thing. You just have to figure it out for yourself. Songs are about interpretation. Many lyricists don't just write what they are saying. They expect you to figure it out.
of course it's about marijuana u fucking idiots don't need to be a genius to figure that out
Íèøòÿê.
Dance with mary jane!!!!
this song is the shit!!!
Hi from Italy!
I agree about the drug allegory in the song. Does anyone remember the Video of this song? With Tom digging Kim Basinger from the grave, dressing her like a bride, havin one last supper, then he takes her to the sea and Kim, while sinking in the dark water, opens her eyes.... the best videoclip I've ever seen!!!
the song isnt about drugs
i've always loved this song.
it's incredible.
I LOVE THIS SONG!
If you don't know that this song is a metaphor for marijuana then you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about Tom Petty... at all.
Its not about drugs its about being in love losing it and getting fed up of the same old shit that this town has to offer..
Tom petty is very good
Brad, Ipswich, England
I love this song.
It's one of my favorites from Tom Petty.
Everytime I hear it, I sing along.
It's a very catchy tune.
Pretty damn good if you ask me.
=]
It's about weed! he gets bored, then he does drugs. its called MARY JANE
ok the song is not about drugs, its about weed, weed is a plant. also the moron who said hotel california is about drugs should get slaped cuz hotel california is about a whore house.
Hotel California is about addiction...
This song I'm less sure but there's that line at the end that's all "hit my last number and walk to the road". That seems like a drug reference to me, aside from the obvious mary jane one. Either way its a kickass song
dude. fucken cool man
This song is so cool I love it I listen to it every morning.
this song inspires me to smoke marijuana.....there i said it.
He uses his physical description of mary jane to cover up what the song is really about...marijuana. duhh. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. "one last chance to ease the pain" come on guys. "I'm tired of screwin' up, tired of going down,
Tired of myself, tired of this town." Hell he might even be saying how he's bored with it and quitting.
hahaha to everyone that says this isn't about drugs is right.
it's about marijuana.
big difference.
lol:)
i love this song:)
such a catchy beat and good lyrics...
beautifully written:)
Hey if anyone wants to text my number is (814)366-0253
this song is definately about sweet marijuana which is a drug like it or not, just not quite as harsh as some other ones haha and yes this song is fucking boss!!! i have a whole soundtrack of these songs like pink floyd comfortably numb and many others i don't feel like naming that i wish would just play 24/7 in my head haha!
Why the arguing? The whole beauty of the song is that it can have several connotations-weed AND a girl-maybe his relationship with her was like his "relationship" with weed.
def my favorite song in the whole free world!:)
Tom Petty is the SHIT!! And this song has gotten me through some pretty rough times, thank you Mary Jane!! and THANK GOD for Tom Petty!!
I love this song because I'm a girl and I live in Indiana. And besides that its just a really great song. I see where everybody says its about drugs, but i dont like to think of it that way, if you do thats how you want to and will interpret it. I say just enjoy the music and stop fighting about it. But then again thats what i think.
It's about addiction; however you want to look at it. Petty chose the analogy of a fruitless/dead-end relationship that he can't seem to get out of (paired, obviously, with the marijuana connotations). It may make you want to smoke, or make you miss your girlfriend; either way, however, you are missing the point.
Oh my my this is the best song
Lmao. Geez people, what is with the arguing? It's a great song and like all great art it is open for interpretation. Now stop fighting!
I always thought this song was about suicide. I mean Mary Jane is supposed to be like a double entandre. One, a depressed young girl and also his release.
Whether or not this is about marijuana, Mary Jane is a NAME and isn't necessarily referring to pot...Interpret it however you please, it's an amazing song none-the-less.
song makes me happy to live in indiana, and smoke weeeed!
So I don't think this song is just about weed, and I don't think it's just about a girl, when I listen to it I think it's Like when I went through a breakup, I smoked up (not a pothead, just enjoy it on a rare occasion) to try and numb the pain. Thus it's one more time to smoke up to kill the pain you feel about a girl.
Yes, we all know, Tom Petty is baked. Alot. And while this song might be a double meaning, last time i checked weed didn't wear underwear or put on a party dress. It's still a great song though one of the best verse of all time.
i love this song. when it comes to the meaning... i see it from both sides. in a drug form and in the eyes of it being about a women and a man.
amazing song
it's not all by weed
=)
Great song! I have it on my iPod and Phone!
its an experience in indiana of a troubled girl.. thats just it..
I think this song can carry a double meaning, and it's up to you to decide for yourself what it's about. You can interpret it as a drug song, or a song about a lost girlfriend. I prefer the second meaning, myself.
There's the marijuana connotations, but it can also be about a girl.
Gran cancionTom , podemos mover el mundo con nuestros dedos sin salir del salon de casa, canciones como estas hacen que cada dia sea un poco más feliz en medio de tanta tristeza. Gracias por tu musica y por tu entrega tan altruista.
k obviously u can take it as either meaning but its about weed no doubt no matter if theres the girl part theres definatley the weed interpretation cuz if someone says take my last number and hit the road they dont mean take a legit # lol comon guys its plain as day!!
i love this song almost as much as i love w-o-w not but it is a good song
i love this song as much as i love playing world of warcraft
My favorite song of Tom Petty
Best damn song from Tom Petty. I love the words and the tune.
Actually it is about nercophillia
I think its about last time smoking weed like one more time to kill the pain the plant grew up tall and at age 18 is when they started smoking her and eventually they ran out of plant or decided to stop
First, Mary Jane isn't about weed (which is not a drug, it is a medicinal/recreational plant)although it does make references to it, but that's because Tom Petty wrote it. This song is about making the same choices over and over again and not getting anywhere even when you try to change.
Secondly, Hotel California isn't about drugs OR a whore a house. Its about being stuck inside a mental institution.
