Mr. Golden Deal Lyrics
Artist: Tonic
Album: Lemon Parade
Swallow your pride
Make way for the new bride
Holding your tongue
When they call another winner
Oh there is more to this life
Hey Mr. Golden Deal
Tell me how does she feel
She's like the wind
That boy couldn't sail
He says I've washed these decks for years
I've carried those pails
And oh there is more to this life
Hey Mr. Golden Deal
Tell me how does she feel
Does she hold you in the night
Does she tell you everything's gonna be alright
Hey Mr. Golden Deal
How does she feel
Captain oh my captain
Steer the first mate true
The men they sing a song of fear
Ghosts of ships who failed before
And the captain he is laughing
You can't control the sea
She will always do as she pleases
It's her nature to be free
And oh there is more to this life
Hey Mr. Golden Deal
Tell me how does she feel
Do you hold her in the night
Do you tell her everything's gonna be alright
Hey Mr. Golden Deal
I know how you feel
Oh, I know
Oh, I know
Hey Mr. Golden Deal
How does she feel

Comments/Interpretations
This song starts off by him letting her go because she found someone else to be with and now shes getting married. "Swallow your pride, make way for the new bride. Holding your tongue, when they call another winner." He is saying he used to be that guy, and now shes moved on.
Then he goes on to talk about how he has washed these decks for years, meaning he has worked with her and been with her, he has carried those pails. He has been with her through everything and now shes with someone else. Then he talks about how the captain always goes down with the ship, also meaning if she ever came back or needed him, he would never leave her "his ship." But she is like the wind, you cant control her and she is like the sea, its her nature to be free.
this is a great song, i love the lyrics to it!
Sarah, if that were true then the lyrics would be ".. make way for the new groom".
This song is simply about fate. Some win some lose and luck be a lady. Your fate is like the sea. Just try to do your best and if you get a Golden Deal don't forget how easy it is to lose it again.
I think Sarah's right; besides "groom" doesn't rhyme with "pride."
He lost his love - someone else won - but be careful new captain: "steer the first mate true" because "you can't control the sea" (life) and she may leave, because "it's in her nature to be free."
I'm living this now - I carried the pails - for nothing. She wants to get together again but "there is more to this life" for me.
Sarah has it right, and it fits in with the entire theme of the album. Love this song!
Sarah has a great interpretation, and Keith, she was right. he's saying that shes now a bride, which she wasn't while with him, "the new bride"
I think this song is about the fact that, well, no matter what you do and how hard you try there will always be someone better.
And doesn't that sting?
"Hey Mr Golden Deal - I know how you feel"
